50 dead in nightclub, worst mass shooting in U.S. history

via USA TODAY:

A heavily armed assailant opened fire in a packed nightclub early Sunday, killing 50 people in the deadliest shooting spree in U.S. history, authorities said.

Mayor Buddy Dyer said 53 wounded in the attack at Pulse Orlando, a gay club just south of downtown. A federal law enforcement official told USA TODAY the suspect has been identified as Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Police Chief John Mina said the tragedy began at 2:02 a.m., when three police officers engaged the suspect in a gun battle outside the club. A hostage situation then took place inside, and a SWAT team was called in, Mina said. Police received updates from patrons trapped in the club, and decided to storm the club at about 5 a.m.

“Our biggest concern was further loss of life,” Mina said. “We exchanged gunfire with the suspect, and he was dead at the scene.”

Mina initially estimated the death toll at more than 20 people. Hours later the true scale of the horror was revealed. Mina said one officer was wounded and at least 30 people were rescued.

“Tonight our community witnessed a horrific crime… that will have a lasting effect on our community,” a solemn Dyer said.

FBI Special Agent Ronald Hopper said the case was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, either domestic or international. It was not clear if the shooter acted alone, he said, adding that authorities were trying to determine if there was a connection with radical Islam.

“We do have suggestions that the individual may have leanings toward that particular ideology,” Hopper said.

A federal law enforcement official told USA TODAY investigators were reviewing the attacker’s possible utterances to determine if he had a terrorist ideology or affiliation. The official, who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of discussing such information, characterized the attack as “certainly’’ terrorism. It was not immediately clear whether investigators were aware of the attacker prior to the assault.

Investigators were interviewing members of Mateen’s family Sunday in an attempt to learn what may have prompted the assault, tahe official said.

NBC News reported that the attacker’s father indicated that Mateen recently expressed anti-gay sentiments, but the official told USA TODAY investigators were still reviewing a range of possible motivations. The official also said investigators were reviewing Mateen’s recent travels and contacts to learn more about possible preparations for the attack

Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, thanked law enforcement officials for their efforts and cautioned any rush to judgment.

“No one could have expected this, no one could have prepared for it, it could have happened anywhere,” a clearly shaken Musri said at a news conference. “It’s like lightening.”

He said the city and Muslim community “are heartbroken.”

Mina said the gunman was armed with an assault rifle, a handgun and some sort of unidentified device. Officers from multiple agencies and dozens of emergency vehicles responded to the scene. Orange County Fire and Rescue called for gurneys to move victims from the club.

Many of the casualties were rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, which was placed on lockdown.

“We can confirm this is a mass casualty situation. Support from local/state/federal agencies,” Orlando police tweeted about four hours after events began to unfold. Then, a short time later: “Pulse Shooting: The shooter inside the club is dead.”

The White House said President Obama was getting updates on the case from Homeland Security.

Mina said there was no indication that there was more than one shooter. A bomb squad was at the scene, and police reported conducting a “controlled explosion.”

Hours after the shooting, police were still trying to piece together what happened.

“Anyone who was at Pulse nightclub and was a witness please come to the Orlando Police HQ,” the department tweeted. “Any information you have could aid investigators in this case.”

FBI Director James Comey has said in recent months that authorities had about 1,000 open investigations into homegrown violent extremists. The overwhelming number of those cases, authorities said, were suspects with alleged ties to the Islamic State.

June is Gay Pride month across the nation, and Orlando recently wrapped up its annual week-long Gay Days festival. Up to 150,000 in the LGBT community attended area theme parks, gay nightclubs and special events. It remains one of the largest gay pride events in the world.

Saturday night into Sunday the club was celebrating Latin Night. Club patron Christopher Hansen told CNN he heard what could have been 20 or 30 shots, setting off a panic as people scrambled for cover or raced for the exits. He said he helped a couple people who were wounded.

“It’s just shocking,” said Hansen, who crawled to safety. “I just saw bodies going down.”
636013093828654172-ppphelan-m.-ebenhack-ap.JPG

As the tragedy was unfolding, Pulse Orlando posted to its Facebook page: “Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running.”

Rosie Feba, a witness, told the Orlando Sentinel she and her girlfriend were in the club near closing time when, “she told me someone was shooting. Everyone was getting on the floor. I told her I didn’t think it was real, I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun.”

Feba told the Sentinel she her girlfriend ran out of the club and helped a man who had been shot get outside.

The Orlando Fire Department called for its bomb squad and hazardous material team to the scene after 3 a.m. ET. Police K-9 dogs searched the area around nearby Orlando Regional Medical Center with an armed deputy in head-to-toe military gear

A loud bang was heard before 5 a.m., but Orlando Police tweeted that it was the controlled explosion by law enforcement.

Ali Kurnaz, 25, told USA TODAY he was working in his living room about a block from the nightclub when he heard gunfire.

“I could hear multiple rounds of gunfire to the point where it scared my cats,” Kurnaz said. “They came running from a different room.”

Kurnaz said he heard sirens as multiple police cars headed to the crime scene and helicopters flying over his neighborhood.

In some tweets appearing to come from inside Pulse nightclub short after the assault, people said they were hiding. Twitter users also said they heard multiple gunshots.

The shooting spree came just one day after The Voice star Christina Grimmie was shot and killed after a concert Friday night at the Plaza Live Theater in Orlando. That gunman, identified as Kevin James Loibl, 27, of St. Petersburg, Fla., fatally shot himself after the attack.

I've been reading this coverage and it's overwhelming. Especially the texts one victim sent his mother while he was hiding in the toilet stall. There are so many issues present here…radical religious extremism, homophobia, need for gun control, mental health services…it's enough to make a person feel hopeless that we'll ever get to a place where this couldn't happen at any time, anywhere.

This story is so sad man. I wish we would just take ISIS out. I can only imagine the families that will find out their child is gay through learning about their death. This is so tragic and well planned by this lunatic who worked for a security company from what i’ve heard. I just pray that we as a nation band together to accept all people regardless of sexual orientation and get these sons of bitches who keep fucking with us and all the other countries. This shit is way out of hand now man. These were mainly kids partying during pride weekend, many were probably just babies in the gay sense of the word. I’m just so distraught by this man.

Sending peace and love to all man

Per CNN, the shooter called 911 at the time of the attack and claimed allegiance to ISIS. And the father said this was not about religion. right.,

I dap your whole post but this part especially. That's why I decided I would never be DL once I accepted myself. Families learning secrets in this manner is too horrible. That's also why, no matter how upset I get at a family member, I just grit my teeth and end the convo with "I love you"; so if I went out like these unfortunate people, it's the last words you heard from me.

We need to start calling out these people regardless of their ideology or "faith." We allow too much bullshyt to go down in the name of the first amendment as if there isn't well established case law regarding speech like this (inciting to harm or violence). They feel free to foment slaughter in the name of their God, oh but let Neil DeGrasse Tyson or some other intelligent person put them in their places, and they start crying like little bitches about "rights", "tolerance", "respect", etc

Well apparently this one was. Just watching live the FBI guy verifying he called 911 about ISIS. Also have seen some (unconfirmed) sources that ISIS is claiming responsibility.

More importantly to me, why is ' just anyone who wants one' able to get an assault rifle? What could this guy or any other average Joe, Jamal, Jose, or Jadir need an assault rifle for?

The more I think about this the more I agree with what your are saying. I really really do not want to see someone like Trump try to take advantage of this, and see people just go blindly anti-Islam. That is what the crazy religious people want, they want Trump-they want more chaos and hatred and vengeance to feed their own agendas as well. What the hell would Trump do if he was president and this happened? Hell they would probably do more of this kind of thing to get him to react and do something stupid.

I hope common sense prevails. Most people of all kinds just want to live their lives in peace.

And don't forget there are gay and womanist Muslims. They are just as much, if not more so, in a precarious state as other lgbt. The extremists in all faiths and ideologies want to prove they are "purer" than more rational and compassionate believers of the same faith.

It is a struggle against extremism and access to weapons of harm. The day before the young contestant from The Voice in Florida was shot down exactly like John Lennon. Both her killer and the Orlando killer had too easy access to weapons. And I can't wait to hear Fox News fukkers try to turn this into (10…9…8…7…) "OBAMA GONNA TAKE OUR GUNS!!!!!"

"Annie Christian, Anti-Christ, until you're crucified, I'll live my life in taxi cabs…."

    "

The commenters on there are already screaming that. In all caps. When they are not blaming Hillary, praising Trump, or making jokes about it all.

None of them are offering any valid reasons as to why your ordinary citizen needs a gun that can (theoretically anyway) shoot 800 rounds per minute.

Just what does your average citizen need with semi-automatic handguns and a modified M-16 semi-automatic assault rifle? Why do citizens need firearms with magazines with 30 rounds in them? -none of that is being discussed though.
This guy killed 50 people(with more expected to die) and injured at least 50 others..one man…one gun.

You only see these really high death tolls with multiple shooters, explosives, or assault-type weapons-other wise you may have five deaths before someone can stop it-not 50!

Well this dead asshole was a follower and was signed up to an online course with former marine, bodyguard for the guy who masterminded the WTC bombing in 1993, criminal bankrobber turned spy Marcus Dwayne Robertson now turned into 'Abu Taubah' who preached hate against gays in where else, Orlando Florida. Here he is in a video! He has 2 wives and 15 kids (at least)and thinks pants hanging is 'gay' Look him up! There is conflicting info on whether or not this guy is in custody at this time.

And the father of the killer is a nutcase who lives here and is currently running for the f**king presidency of Afghanistan and praises the Taliban in this video:

I looked at the pictures all day, pictures of those at the club, of those outside the hospital, I kept thinking these people are us, how many times have I seen them in the club, no matter what club. People just looking to have a good time, celebrate, shake off the cares of everyday life, of jobs or school work. We have all been there. It tears at the heart of us. Our grief is real and deep and beyond comprehension. We must remain strong and celebrate who we are in the face of this hate.

Am far away from America but I feel bad and cold because those people are like me, they were free spirits and happy. But one person who has HATE went and attacked them in their PLACE. Its horrifying and one person told his friend via a text that he is afraid of what will happen to us where they prison 14 years for having a same-sex relationship.
I feel like I have lost a brother I have never seen but we were connected and these people are coming for me. Am afraid.

The sad and really troubling part, is the person that committed the murders didn't see himself as full of hate. On the contrary, he saw himself as being full of compassion by taking these peoples' lives so that they didn't have to "suffer" being abominations in the eyes of the Abrahamic God. SMMFH It's really time for an asteroid to come and wipe this planet clean. Leave the plants and animals, but get rid of us.

Don't even get me started on the hypocrisy of pedophilia in the Muslim/Arab world and their public disdain of CONSENTING ADULT msm relationships. Strange birds indeed. Pederasty is ingrained and encouraged (see the Quran and verses about those in paradise being "served by YOUTHS who never age"), but then they go ape shyt about activity among adults. Publicly, of course. Privately, I know of many military and government people who encountered closeted Saudi and other Arab "straight men." Islam makes crazy DL mofos as much as extremist interpretations of Christianity, Judaism and other faiths/ideologies.

And somebody needs to tell Omar Mateens dad to stfu. He goes on a news binge about Islam having nothing to do with his son's behavior and then ends with the usual "God will punish them." He better hope some LGBT version of Spike Lee doesn't pull an anti-Zimmerman like move and post his home address on Twitter….

I wasn't at all surprised the gunman pledged allegiance to ISIS. I also wasn't surprised that so called progressives and liberals many of whom are also gay started repeating that same old lie that this attack "had nothing to do with Islam." Then they proceed to accuse anyone who disagree with their bullshyt of "islamophobia." Never mind the fact that all Abrahamic mythologies including Islam condemn homosexuality. In most Islamic countries punishment for homosexuality is usually imprisonment or death. Also there have been recent poles conducted and as many as half of all Muslims many of whom live in western countries think homosexuality should be illegal. It seems to me many LGBT are stuck on stupid when it comes to Islam and Muslims. Had a Christian shot those people in that night club in the name of god and Jesus they'd be raking Christians and Christianity over the coals. This my friends is a blatant double standard, intellectually dishonest, and cowardice at its finest.

You'll get no disagreement from me. Its also a matter of competing victimhoods for liberal elites, who dictate the hierarchy of who is more of a protected class at any given moment or circumstance. Thus, neoliberal elites, having a need for cheap foreign labor and relations with Muslim countries for trade reasons suppress the criticism of Islam compared to LGBT issues. They also share the traditional intellectual Marxist mentality (even if they don't openly state it) that homosexuality is a bourgeoise construct (a white left equivalent of the black nationalist hotep meme that gay people are "destroying the black family"). Finally there is the left s anti-Israel legacy and the idea that Palestinians are totally innocent angels. All these have played into gay people rubber stamping and repeating the islamophobia line handed to them by liberals, Democrats, and some internationalist Republicans. Then there's just plain cowardice. Draw Jesus and put him screwing prostitutes on an episode of Family Guy all you want, but don't attempt to shine a satirical light on Islam ("shhh, don't say nothing and maybe the Wahabists will go away").

There is also the problem of almost none of them having read or understanding the Quran. Thus, a lot of them, for example, had no idea what the title of Rushdie's novel referred to (and why extremists were pissed that it highlights the ridiculous lying and behavior of Mohamed in regards to his so-called revelations); or the pederasty verses I quoted.

This news is beyond devastating! Although I knew none of them personally, I've cried real tears as if I've known you all forever. My heart is literally aching for these victims AND for this country at the same time. This is not about sexuality…this is not about religious beliefs…this is not (just) about gun control…this is about HATE. Let's not forget, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OF US! ANYWHERE! As a matter of fact, I was out in a club at the same time this happened and I never doubted the fact that I would make it home…and there but for the grace of God go I.

Look at the mess that's left behind based off of PURE HATE. 50 HUMAN BEINGS HAVE BEEN KILLED! Lives are destroyed and families torn apart because of senseless violence and staggering ignorance. How many times can we "pray about it"? How many more have to be slaughtered for people to wake up? Let's banish the teasing, bullying, and harming of another because they're not "normal" and LOVE instead (or at least leave people the hell alone if this is too hard for you to do.) In a world full of darkness and hatred, the light of LOVE is needed now more than ever!

To all those injured and unharmed by this massacre, be that light in someone else's life and strive to make the most out of yours, after all, you are still here for a reason.

To all of those slain, know you are loved, your lives meant so much to this world and you are in our hearts and prayers. May your legacy live on through your families, friends and spirit.

    Rest well, friends. Much love.

He went after Trump but totally missed Bill Maher's and Sam Harris's main points about liberal cowardice in dealing with I-S-L-A-M.

Obama is between a rock and a hard place though. I do not think he has been 'soft' or anything on terror. And I think he needs to call out Trump's over-the-top rhetoric and has to walk a fine line. Also what he says publicly and his policy decisions that may result from this may not be the same-that is just the way of politics.

The radical nutjob Xtians and Muslims WANT Trump..they want to push his agenda because him getting in will help their recruiting-f**k the innocents who die because of warfare, they only care about their religion/ideology/agenda and Trump will help them there. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders why this happened to mostly hispanics in Florida-a state the GOP really needs…and they need hispanics too. If other 'swing states'(like here in Ohio) have an attack, I will get really suspicious. Trump only needs the swing states to win, and our enemies know that too.

I have expected terror attacks to increase before the election-because they will help Trump, which will help our enemies by radicalizing that many more people. smh. Columbus just had a lone wolf attack with people being slashed with machetes at Nazareth restaurant here, and there have been many plots that have been uncovered(including one in 2003 that would have been a disastrous attack at the Polaris mall here). They just caught some people plotting last year, and some the year before, here. Too many soft targets: sprawling OSU campus, Pride, many festivals, Ohio State Fair, Short North Gallery Hop-all year long and always packed with people, etc. -It is like they want to keep trying here until they can pull something off.

I think we are in for a very difficult time coming up as a nation, given the political divisions, the conventions coming up, the increased potential for terrorist attacks, either lone wolf or other. I would sure as hell avoid cruise ships-6-10 thousand crew and passengers getting attacked in some isolated Caribbean waters, with people and lifeboats being attacked from 'terror' boats while the ship goes down. How long would it take for any help to arrive? *shudders*

I couldn't agree more with your {conspiracy} theory. If it is actually that (we'll of course never know) it was done kinda "sloppily" compared to past maneuvers.

Bill Maher's latest Tweet sums it up for me:

#Orlando Conservatives:"Don't say it has anything to do with guns!" Liberals:"Don't say it has anything to do with Islam!" #DrowningInBS

It could be something as simple as increasing the hate speech there hoping to set people off(see the guy saying gays should be killed who spoke in Orlando just a few months ago. Finding crazy vulnerable people and 'helping' them to go off would be the easiest way to go really. You could preach hate to them without actually breaking the law-just enough to set them off on a murderous rampage, hopefully. If you are working on ten or 20 of them you could hope that at least one would snap. Not trying to be all 'conspiracy' and all-I think most conspiracy stuff is full of shyt. But this would not even be a conspiracy really-just actual common sense for religious zealots wanting Trump in so he can cause more chaos and increase their numbers.

*agree with Rico's post…it does not have to be one or the other-it can be neither, both, any combo…binary thinking is for simpletons!

I'm like this dude…it's MORE than obvious that retard religious doctrine sits at the very core of this incident. Guns were the weapon of choice to act on a deep rooted hatred, whatever the cause/reason for that hatred. But my thing is this…I don't like an entire group of people being persecuted because of the religion they practice. I've been chattin' on and off with a lil' gay Arabic dude who is (much to my dismay) Muslim. Like gay Christians and gay Jews he obviously ignores the part of his practice where gays are an abomination and to be put to death. Point being, not every [email protected] who follows Islam (however a$$ backward it is) is a homophobic jerk that wants women perpetually wrapped in 600 count sheets and world domination. Please don't think Im defending any of the three "cults" or their derivatives because as I've stated numerous times, I don't care for any of them however, as I'm sure we all know, the ONLY reason the hate mongering is being focused on these people hardbody,l is because of what their home territory is sittin' on top of and the money being generated by it. If the real focus were on the dangers of religious fanaticism combined with lax gun laws and subsequently quarantining off and deporting its purveyors, then this would be a totally different country because there are just as many Christians that take the Bible to heart and hold these exact same Islamic ideals in regard to what is deemed "a sin", living right HERE. And they have committed murders for the same reasons, maybe not on such a grand scale, but they've done it. Christians (and probably Jews as well, I don't know much about them) are all over the world doing damn near the same sh!t to what they perceive as "Sinners". My point is don't blame an entire people for the ignorance of a few, or for the message being promoted and perpetuating by our media, whom we know is always truthful and unbiased with everything they communicate to the American public. :iverson2:
