It's a lot. Marketing, record labels, radio bias, piracy, streaming, white folks have more money to spend and social media presence.
Most Rap artists have pretty loyal fan bases and reach many demographics so it's no surprising when you see them have great sales.
Rihanna and BEYONCE are all the general public/white folks need, but they're pop stars so they're not even exceptions to me, they don't count at all IMO. Black folks that I see on social media seem like they only want to see ONE black artist succeed at a time or at all. Always fighting over the net but never putting the money up when it counts. White folks get involved in that stuff too but they at least have the money to back all the foolishness they do. -

Phew! I was worried about this post, especially when I read "So what's the point of this blog post?" Worried that this was a farewell. Thankfully it wasn't. Keep on for another eight years.

I mean...Good for him...I guess...
Side Note: The whole “coming out” thing has always been weird to me personally. Making the big announcement. As if being gay defined who you were. Who cares.
Just read today that a black male valedictorian came out as bisexual during graduation speech. Sigh. My viewpoint is just do you and tell the people that need to know if they have consequence to you doing you.
I do recognize that gay/bisexual celebs probably do need to get ahead of any gossip and rumors so coming out first may be better. Then again, Queen Latifah just been living her best life and never came Out. I like the way she’s doing it.
Then again (again), I’ve also never been into gossip and who’s dating who. Most people are. So I can see the need to share this information in a big announcement since the masses seem to need to know.BlackguyExecutive, Krimsonic_, Dante and 2 others dapped this. -
This was well done. This was a black man using art to deliver a message, and it was done so effectively in my opinion. The interpretation I had was black folks want to be happy and free, but we have tt remember we are seen as targets, and have social ills disrupting our peace.

I have to admit when I first saw this video on my social media timeline, I only got about two minutes in and closed the video until my friend told me to watch the entire thing. I get the message but I don't know how much good it will do. I firmly believe that if you have to preface a statement with I'm not racist, then you should probably examine what you are going to say or do next. Because 9 times of 10 its probably something racist. I think when people start to realize that the system is designed for the richest among us will we actually make strides on the racial front. People at the top are creating artificial divisions among the poor, poor blacks and poor whites. Even middle-class blacks and whites. I think sometimes we forget that when Dr. MLK marched on Washington he was marching for jobs and freedom, not black people or white people. He recognized that the system was working against both peoples.

This has really been bothering me over the last few days. Rapper XXXTentacion was murdered at the age of 20 few days ago and since then there have been many questions and discussions raised.
I was already relatively familiar with the rapper but I had yet to actually listen to his music. All I knew was that he rapped about a lot of dark things. He was a troubled young man who eventually took a leave of absence from social media for the last couple months. Frankly, when I initially caught wind of his death, I was like, "Damn, another young black man murdered”, gave my silent well-wishes, and lowkey continued my day.
As the day progressed, there was a large outpour of condolences from big names in the industry along with his fans and supporters. This, I took no issue with. It wasn’t until the condolences turned into what I would deemed borderline idolization.
This dude raped, beat, and kidnapped folks in his past. Although he was never convicted of any crimes, it’s apparent that some element of this is true. Furthermore, it’s in his music so I’ve been told. Folks kept harping on the fact that he died too young, he had so much potential, he was trying to change his life around, etc.
While that’s fine, I’m finding it hard to support problematic ass people nowdays and while his death was sad, he was one of those people. He, along with other current rappers, ushered in the drug-abuse, self-harm culture that burdens our black and brown kids. On one hand, he made it okay to express the intricacies of mental health but on the other hand, he normalized maladaptive behaviors that are killing our youth.
I just can’t support that. Folks would counter, “Well if Malcolm X and Maya Angelou died in their 20’s, we wouldn’t have had the givings of such thought leaders.” While that may be true, we could say that about anybody. Why do we refuse to hold people accountable for their fucked up behavior?Cyrus-Brooks, I-Stay-Woke, SB3 and 2 others dapped this. -

Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino drops provocative single and video entitled, "This is America." In the same vein of J.Cole's recent album, he deliveres commentary on the state of America, with a focus on the Black experience. Concept and production were amazing. So many layers.
Some of the comments on social media were disheartening though. From what I've read so far, the conversation has focused on his dancing and him possibly being a little "sweet" which to that I would respond that they completely missed the element of caricature in the piece.
On a somewhat larger scale, people (mostly black women, go figure) are questioning his ability to be pro-black while also being with a white woman and having mixed kids (what a novel argument, right?) To that, I'd respond get the fuck out of here. That's a very narrow view. Hell, Ben Carson is married to a Black woman and look how problematic he is. In past interviews, Glover has been noted saying that while growing up he was often rejected by black women as a "white-sounding", black nerd. Many believe this has pushed him to expand into the realm of white wimminz which isn't unreasonable. Again, Black women feel that they are owed Black men. How are you going to dictate who I can and can't love?
Anyway! Watch the video and give me you guys' first impressions!OckyDub, BlackguyExecutive, ControlledXaos and 2 others dapped this. -

I make it no secret that I’m a masculine black gay hip hop fan, possibly the biggest fan in all of the Cypher Avenue squad. I love just about all artists from new and old, from commercial to indie, from ratchet to conscious, from sing-songy to lyrical acrobats…I just love rap music.
As laid back of a person I am, my favorite kind of rap music has always been of the turn up variety. I was the young guy in the crowd pushing & shoving and getting rowdy when the D.J. played songs by Onyx, M.O.P., Dead Prez and Pharoahe Monch’s Simon Says.
So it’s no surprise (to me at least) that I love Trap Music and hyped lyrics-heavy Street Rap from artists like Meek Mill and Ace Hood.
What I like about Ace Hood is he has rapid fire bars for days and he makes it look effortless. For those of you who forgot about him, here’s his hit record from 2013, “Bugatti” featuring Future & Rick Ross.
The other things I like about the 29 year old rapper is that while he raps tough and celebrates his “hood” persona, he’s actually never been to prison. He actually was a High School football star who had his dreams of playing in the NFL squashed after an injury in the 10th grade. So it was then that he took up rapping and started working his way up locally in Florida, eventually signing to Def Jam.
For what its worth, he was also named to XXL Magazine’s Freshmen Class of 2009 along with Wale, B.o.B, Charles Hamilton, Asher Roth, Cory Gunz, Blu, Mickey Factz, Curren$y, and Kid Cudi:
The last thing I like about Ace Hood is, well, the dude looks good…and he knows it. Those that follow his Instagram know 2 things: He’s a devoted family man and he likes showing off his ripped body, smooth dark skin and well done dreadlocks.
After releasing 4 studio albums through Def Jam and Cash Money Records via DJ Khaled’s ‘We The Best’ label, Ace Hood is now 100% independent. He releases and distributes music & merch through his own imprint, Hood Nation. Unlike many people seen trying to destroy careers on Black Twitter, I actually support Black entrepreneurial endeavors.
Ace’s newest mixtape Trust The Process has a Gold Status (over 500,000 streams and downloads) on the number one mixtape site in the world, Datpiff.
So once I saw the opportunity to support the artist by attending his Los Angeles stop on the Trust The Process tour, I jumped on it.
It was a small, intimate venue which is the kind that I love. You know that you’re going to be surrounded by real fans and get to connect with the artist more than you would in a huge arena.
Ace jumped on stage and comfortably stepped into the role of M.C., rapping so hard and getting so hyped that he was soaking wet with sweat after just a couple songs. This is what you want from any performer, a person who will work just as hard for a small room as they would if they were in the Staples Center. These were his real fans. Not the fans who were just around for DJ Khaled or Trey Songz or Future…these fans were here to support him.
Ace didn’t disappoint. He performed tracks from the new mixtape as well as the classics from his studio albums. He even surprised us by performing “Bugatti” in the middle of his set, instead of saving it for the end.
Everyone was having a great time and Ace was feeling the love & support in the room. So he jumped up on a riser and reached out to crowd giving us all daps.
Gay feelings aside, it’s always dope when you can get that kind of physical connection with a rapper you think is dope. There’s power in daps. That’s the reason why Cypher Avenue forum “likes” are all called “daps” instead.
Then it happened.
Ace was in-between songs talking to the crowd:
That’s when we locked eyes and shared a moment:
BRUH!!!!!!
Man, I was on my hard Hip Hop shit all night until then.
Jokes aside, Ace Hood is very heterosexual (and possibly quietly homophobic given his Southern Christian upbringing).
Regardless, I can appreciate and give props to the man being a tenacious entrepreneur despite many setbacks, for taking care of his body and sharing those results with his fans and for seemingly being a great father to his children (baby mama drama aside).
While I may not buy Herbalife from many of the other Thirst Traps that I follow on IG, I def try to support financially when the opportunity presents. While not a huge investment, attending this concert was definitely money well spent.
Are there any Musicians (or Thirst Traps) that you’ve supported recently? Tell us about it.

Gloria Carter, Jay-Z’s mother, came out as lesbian in a new track featured on the rapper’s just-released “4:44” album.
The song, “Smile,” features both Jay-Z and his mother discussing her sexuality. It is the first time that either of them has publicly addressed her sexual identity.
“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” Jay-Z raps in the song, which contains a sample of Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s In Need Of Love Today.”
“Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he adds before asserting, “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.”
Carter herself shows up on track to deliver a spoken word outro.
“Living in the shadow / Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live?” she asks on the close-to-five-minute track. “In the shadows people see you as happy and free / Because that’s what you want them to see,” she continues. “The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free / But you live with the fear of just being me... Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be / No harm for them, no harm for me / But life is short, and it’s time to be free / Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.”
Jay-Z has a record of speaking out on behalf of the LGBTQ community. In 2012 the rapper, who recently welcomed twins with his wife Beyonce, revealed he supported same-sex marriage in an interview with CNN.
“I’ve always thought [not allowing same-sex individuals to wed] was still, um, holding the country back,” Jay-Z said. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”

After looking at the interview, I'm far more bothered by celebrity worship and Black folks actually caring what the fuk Lil Wayne has to say on an issue he doesn't care about. WTF? This stupid sh!t is now trending with triggered Black people?

If you want to get to the part he starts talking about homosexuality is 13:40.
A lot of people feel that how can you have a issue with your son being exposed to two men kissing on tv but be ok with your son seeing you rap and doing movies about selling drugs and killing people as if that's ok. I hate when people think that their kids are just going to start being gay because they see it on tv. Why is it a problem to educate your children on what is going on in the world around them? Yes there is certain age to talk about sex but if you allow your child to watch adult material (straight or gay) don't be surprised when they have questions. I think this goes back to the idea that people think as children they have no clue on what attracts them yet and from my own experience that is not true. I knew at a very young in the least I had a attraction to boys and girls. Girls because that is what society says what I was suppose to like and boys because I knew how I felt inside. As a kid I even kiss and dry humped other boys my age and I never seen anything gay on tv before.
My other problem is I love music and though I may not agree with the artist personal beliefs, some of them are really talented. I find myself wanting to stop supporting these artist but I really love the music. So now I just ignore their ignorance and listen to the songs I enjoy no matter their opinion on me being gay but when they drop the f bomb or say pause I do feel some type of way.
How do you feel about what Beanie Sigel said ?

Nicki Minaj says "Fuk You Gays and Orlando? Just to be clear, you're a rapper who sings about sex, frequently dresses as a woman of the night and is shacking up with a dude unmarried BUT you "believe in what the bible says?" The hypocrisy of heterosexuals.
If gay folks still support this chick, yall are idiots. Well they still support and thirst after Chris Brown so never mind. Black folks and Gay Black folks stay getting made a fool of...Cyrus-Brooks, SB3, BlackguyExecutive and 2 others dapped this. -

One of my favorite (if not absolute favorite) ways to spend a weekend is to go out and absorb the art and culture in my own city. Finding new artists is really special for me.Being present for a festival,or some intimate show of an unknown ,but exquisite band is an awesome experience.
So I'm going to showcase of of my favorite discoveries and invite you all to do the same with talent from your area.
AJC
This guy is so much fun.He gives off major energy in every single performance,no matter the size of the crowd or venue.Plus he genre hops/blends,which I love, because I listen to most genres and enjoy aspects of each. He's also great about showcasing the musicians with him.
Kerry Thomas
People call him Tony Terry because he has red hair, but really he gives off more of a John Legend vibe.He plays a guitar, which earns major points with me.He even had a bit part in the James Brown movie Get on Up.
His looks have nothing to do with it
Justin Ransburg
I stumbled on this guy a couple of weeks ago out a sidewalk festival thing held every month in my city's arts district.
Keyone Starr
If you've ever wondered why Jxn,MS gets a shoutout in "Uptown Funk",she's why. She's signed with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

I don’t know if its the voice…I don’t know if its the great songwriting…I don’t know if its the sexy full beard…whatever it is, something about up and coming crooner Sam Dew has me sold from the jump.
Hailing from Chicago, Sam Dew has long worked behind the scenes with artists like Wale and Rihanna. He wrote and performed the hook to this 2013 Wale banger, “LoveHate Thing.”
In mid-2015 he stepped to the front of the stage by releasing Damn Sue, an electric 6 track EP giving us a taste of great things to come. The opening track of the EP, “Desperately” was even featured in a pivotal scene in Spike Lee’s polarizing expectation-crushing film Chi-Raq.
While the EP is dope, the Sam Dew track that made me a fan isn’t even on the record. The song “Drive” was featured on the Red Bull Sound Select website to promote Sam’s tour dates with the company last year. Unfortunately he had to cancel his Atlanta appearance once the Afropunk festival was rained out so I didn’t get the chance to hear him perform this song and others live.
I’m definitely a new stan for Sam Dew over here, joining the ranks of other on-the-come-up artists that we love here on Cypher Avenue like Chance The Rapper, Childish Gambino and more.

Donald Glover is back on TV, but he's a long way from (his former) home.
The former Community star created, exec produces and stars in FX's new half-hour comedy Atlanta. The series centers on Earnest "Earn" Marks (Glover) a loner who returns to his hometown of Atlanta to try to make ends meet before being drawn into the rap scene when his cousin suddenly skyrockets to stardom.
"I just always wanted to make Twin Peaks with rappers," Glover joked to reporters Saturday (Jan. 16) at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
Atlanta marks Glover's return to TV following Community, on which he starred for five seasons. In the time in between, Glover headlined a semi-autobiographical comedy for NBC in 2012 that was never picked up and also launched a successful rap career under the name Childish Gambino.
Glover said he was courted for other projects in the interim, but "I knew they weren't me," he said. "People wanted to make me everything. I think they still do."
Instead, Glover waited to find a way to combine his two artistic passions in Atlanta. "Its kind of the perfect time to make something that I would want to see," he said. Glover pointed specifically to the need in the current era to interact with viewers across multiple platforms like cell phones and computers in addition to on TV. "There's more screens that have to be filled," he continued. It's "the perfect time to combine everything that media kind of is right now."
The result is a series Glover says is deeply personal to him. Instead of a writer's room, the writers of Atlanta convene at Glover's house where they eat together and peruse the Internet together. "I've been keeping them very close and tight and secret because I just want to make sure they're perfect," he said when asked about the scripts of the series.
"Television shows are like novels. You just got to invest in them. The tone of this, its going to take people time to figure out what's going on, which I think is a good thing."
Atlanta premieres this summer on FX. -
