Post a book that is on your reading list this winter or summer. I will start with the one I am reading its titled, Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South: An Oral History by E. Patrick Johnson. Its been on my reading list for quite sometime since grad school ended for me. I have picked it up and put it down over the past few months due to prior engagements. However, now that things have calmed down in life just a bit, I am going commit to reading it and its entirety. I am sure it will carry me well into the summer months, but you can read an excerpt of the book by clicking on the hyperlink above if you are trying to decide if want read the book. Peace and respect my brothers!

This is a pretty cool topic. I have been meaning to get back into my reading. This was one of the books recommended on a list for me. I am not a big fiction fan. I mostly prefer auto/biographies. But I checked out the link. It seems pretty good. The price was cheap. Thanks for sharing.

Side Note* Love the Obama gif. Every time you post a vid-I watch that for a few second before I move on. Lol.

"The Mis-Education Against Homosexuality in the Bible". It's from the prospective of a black SGL pastor, Rev. Gregory R. Smith. He talks about the ignorance of the church and it's wrong interpretations of the scriptures. I only find this topic interesting because I grew up in the church. Particularly, PENTECOSTAL-tongue talking, foot stomping, doing back flips churches. The worst of the worst. So, any subject matter like this will always peak my interest. I no longer am apart of the church anymore. However, I still love reading about it.

Question. Do you prefer ebooks or hardback covers. My sister is trying to get me into Kindle and all of that stuff. But, I want to hold the book in my hands, read pages and flip them over. Know what I mean? Lol.

Wanted to read to book before I watched the movie version..

Based on what I know about you. I think E. Lynn Harris books would appeal to you. Matter of fact both of these would. I should have read Black bird before I watched the film. I usually do it that way.

Love this thread! Good shit @scooter !!

This book used to be one of my favorite popular fiction novels. It's sequel "Deception, Lies, & the Truth" wasn't all that great, but it does keep the narrative going and wraps up some of the plot lines.

Here's a great collection of work from one of the first black gay writers who said whatever the hell he wanted to say.
    978-0-8223-2913-8_pr.jpg

I enjoy novels, but to be honest I feel that some of the most daring work in African American and American literature comes from black gay poets. Yet, poets don't get the same kind of engagement and readership as novelists, for a whole host of reasons... So here's a full length collection ([Insert] Boy) and chapbook (Black Movie) of contemporary poetry written by my boy Danez.

So y'all wanna find/agree on a book and talk about it soon?!

Building on what you just stated I think Kelly B. Douglas Sexuality and the Black Church: A Womanist Perspective is also a great book that speaks to the mis-interpretation of biblical scriptures when it comes to sexuality in the church. Btw I do both e-book and hard copy, but I lean more towards e-books.

I think Torn seems like it would be a great read as well. We'll keep that in the top 3 as a choice.

So, I am thinking that whatever we decide should be a comprise of all these elements.
Erotic, spiritual, naiveté love, and sgl roots ?

U would call him an erotic author? He does have some nasty ass scenes but he seems to align and develop his characters more so through non-erotic narratives.

If you want to read something with all the above we can always look at Craig Stewart's work Words Never Spoken, One Thing for Certain Two Things for Sure it encompasses all that you've described from a biography standpoint.

I'm all for Giovanni's Room I have a hard copy that I am ashamed to say I haven't read as a Black Queer Studies major :( so I believe we can all agree that we should at least pay homage to James Baldwin, and his activism for the black community as well as the SGL community. As for nonfiction I can put up a poll and we can follow up in 2 weeks to see how the poll went and make our determination for non-fiction. I'll put up at least 5 books and if you can get ppl to weight in on the poll.

I loved Giovanni's Room. Huge Baldwin fan. I am always going to respect E. Lynn because
"Invisible Life" helped me come to terms with my sexuality. So, I got mad respect for him.

Oh yes! I give it you, definitely gotta have respect for E (rest his soul). I just think that his legacy in popular black gay fiction casts a big shadow on some other writers, even those his work remains in conversation with which is another kind of oddity. He really did some great work.

So we reading Giovanni's Room first then? Looking forward to the nonfiction readings, that sounds dope af! I've never had something like this before real talk. Class readings/discussions are so regimented, expedited, and over-tasked that there's no way to actually enter the text. I'm really looking forward to this fellas!

So if we reading Baldwin, we gotta read Samuel Delany too right?! lbs

    I have a few questions
How long do we have to read ?
Does it have to revolve around black gay experience in someway ?
