BBC follows two UK-based transgender men, as they reveal their new gender identity to their families in the land of their birth, Jamaica.

This was really good. I liked how it didn't give the same stereotypical image of homophobia and transphobia on the island. It was more multidimensional. The family members definitely weren't celebrating the transitions of the two transmen, but at least they remained semi-open minded. News reports on Jamaica would have you believing that they would be shot on the spot. Then again, I'm sure having cameras in your face definitely reduces the likelihood of conflict. I'm also curious to see how things would be different if they had a transwoman return to the island or a gay men with his male partner. I'm sure the response would be a lot worse.

I'm sure male to female transition would've also been met with more push back as it is perceived as more threatening to the social order. Just like homosexual and bisexual men get more negative feedback than homosexual and bisexual women because male homosexuality is perceived as more threatening to the established order.

Also in this particular case these guys don't have to live in Jamaica. They can go back to Britain when this is all said and done and live relatively safe and secure lives. I'm sure transgender people who have to live in Jamaica have it much worse.

I agree about the female to male transition being accepted better. It is male privelege, and they seem about as masculine as most straight white gay men lol. White gay media pretty much presents Jamaica as a hellhole and pretty much requires a full boycott-at least that is what I have gotten from it.

You gotta remember a lot of straight men think that males who transition to females are trying to trick them into the "gay lifestyle." So transgender women face a great deal of violence. As for Jamaica being a "hellhole" I'm not qualified to say with 100% certainty. Homophobia aside, from what I've read about the island the economy is in bad shape. Crime, violence, and poverty are rampant. Even though I don't wear my sexuality on my sleeve I don't hide it either, from what I know of the homophobic culture I certainly would never go there.

Shyt I meant to say that female to male is more accepted, as in what these guys did-transition to male from female. That is what I meant about the male privilege-becoming a man is accepted better than becoming a female. I will edit my previous post.

I also think it is not just male privilege, but straight male privilege. These guys(I am assuming) transitioned into straight men. How would it have gone down if they were born women but identified as gay men? If they had said 'I am your son now instead of your daughter, but I am now not just a guy, but a gay guy attracted to guys. Instead of having a daughter you now have a gay son.' ??

All I have heard about Jamaica is negative. Gay white media tells me to boycott. Straight whites say stay only in places like Ocho Rios/north east-north central coast and stay within the resorts for the most part and above all avoid Kingston.

All of the islands that were British held are more homophobic as I understand it. If I had a chance to travel down there(yeah right) I would choose maybe Martinique. Beautiful, has a large city, and being an actual department of France/following French laws I would think that it would be more tolerant(to a point). Plus I would want the language difference to give more of the 'foreign travel' feel.

I would never know that these guys were born women. They are transitioning well at least when it comes to passability...at least to me.

All the places ruled by the British Empire had anti-sodomy laws including countries in Africa and India as well. Like Christianity black people in the Caribbean and continental Africa cling to these white ideals about "sexual morality" and religion even taken them to the next level.

I know about Africa and how those damn evangelical f@cks have stirred things up and made things so much worse than they were in places like Uganda. Are they active in the Caribbean too? Just one more reason to dislike organized religion.

I can only imagine what it is like to be gay/transgender in Uganda.

I don't want to even think about what the radical muslim nations must be like.

Yes American Christian evangelicals are stirring up existing gay hatred and prejudice in the Caribbean just like they are in Africa. I often say as tough as it was to grow up being gay in the US I'm glad I wasn't born in Africa, the Caribbean, some Islamic country. Also all Muslim countries are "radical" by western standards. You should read some of the opinion polls that come from Islamic countries regarding homosexuality, gender, religion, and other controversial topics. Muslims as a whole tend to be very backwards. "Religion of peace".......bullshit.
