Has anyone read the graphic novel "Virgil"?
It seems interesting. When I read the description it kinda reminded me of the novel @ockydub was working on.

I am so out of the mainstream on this topic, lol. I was the weird kid growing up that read anything BUT Marvel or DC lol. The more esoteric, the bettet. So, I'm going to go out on a limb.

Most of my favorites are people whose style influenced my own when I was younger. I usually go for the sarcastic and humorous; for example, a modern comic title I love is Chew.

    I also dig
    1. Almost ANYTHING by Jack Kirby. If I were an art instructor, all my two-dimensional design students would be required to study his character placements and layouts.

    2. Jeff Smith's "Bone" saga

    3. Early MAD Magazine, 1950s comic book version, particularly Wallace Wood's art.

    4. Jack Cole's original Plastic Man
    5. CC Beck's 1940s Captain Marvel

A lot of early comics are totally in the public domain due to the post-WWII industry collapse and the prevailing copyright laws. For example, Gene Yang, who is doing a lot of recent Superman writing for DC's New 52, took an obscure public domain superhero from WWII, the Green Turtle, and rewrote it as The Shadow Hero, my favorite graphic novel of the past couple of years. Now that Black Panther is getting the ethnic film treatment, I'm hoping Yang's increased popularity will get Shadow Hero turned into a Donnie Yen-type action movie.

And last but not least, is the return of Brotherman, which kicked off the modern independent black comic era. I haven't pickec up the new version, but I'm dying to see Dawud Anyabwile's revisioning of a character he published back in the New Jack era.
