Donald Trump selects Mike Pence as VP - CNNPolitics.com

So what do you think? Will it make any difference yea or nay?

Why Pence? Hopefully his bungling of the gay/religion drama in Indiana hurts him and Trump.

""I think he is going to be a great president. I think he is someone who has connected with everyday Americans like no one since Ronald Reagan. I think he has spoken into the frustration and the longings of the American people as no one since the 40th president, and I think you're going to continue to see him do that," Pence told reporters Tuesday after an event in Indianapolis."

Great. Just. great. another Reagan is just what we need. smh.

I'm through with politics but here's the reasons, since I'm on Indianas doorstep:

    - Trump needs Pence to (in his mind) shore up the evangelical wing since the corporate wing of the Party is either holding its nose to vote Hillary or sitting out 2016. Since the GOP evangelicals are militaristic he does not need a general or military type on the ticket for national security rep purposes.

    - Pence got really lucky. Since, by the states law he can't run for Governor again AND VP at the same time, he gets to save face. He had an uphill battle for being re elected plus he has strong GOP competition for the gubernatorial. Hoosier son, Evan Bayh, though a Democrat is very loved in Indiana and would stomp all over Pence. So Pence won't be embarrassed by losing the governor race since he will no longer be in it and if he loses the VP he can always say it was Trump's fault.

Yeah, I hate politics but since I was a legislative aide in my 20s, that virus courses through my veins. Somebody please give some political Truvada...

The missing piece in the discussion of Pence is his relationship with the media.
In fact, the national press loves him (I cannot speak about the Indiana press). When he was a Congressman he got fawning press coverage for a number of reasons, not least of which was the fact that he had been a media person himself and though he was not a reporter, he understood the way to relate to his media cousins. He was accessible to the political reporters, spent a lot of time cultivating them. Not unlike Gingrich, who was famous for his early morning walks around Washington where reporters were welcome to tag along, Pence flattered reporters with his attention to them - and believe me there is nothing reporters respond to more than flattery. Read stories from his Congressional days and you will see references to his presence, his looks, his voice, all of which were used to portray a sense of gravity.
So how does this matter? I think Pence will be deputized to soothe the media, to convince them that Trump is serious, not just because he chose Pence as his VP, but also through Pence's active wooing of the press, telling them how important they are so that Trump gets a little bit of the benefit of the doubt - not unlike the good media cop to Trump's bad media cop.

I used to be a journalist and you're right a lot of them are sycophantic assholes. I guess I'm seeing it through local eyes, I just keep thinking Dole-Kemp. I don't know why the GOP thinks a charismatic VP can be an anchor for a sinking hulk of a presidential candidate.

Dole-Kemp is a good example. Jack Kemp was the half of the ticket that was supposed to be the compassionate balance to cranky old BobDole. And Kemp had his patented concern for minorities - remember his constant invocation of Sylvia Woods and Sylvia's Soul Food Restaurant?
But it didn't work because nothing was going to help BobDole (as he often referred to himself) but also because there was such a total disconnect between the two of them.
So, Trump wins this on his own, that's true, but Pence adds a good story line for the media.

I gathered Jack Kemp was genuine, if naive, in his "conservativism can be a rainbow!" beliefs from what little interaction I had with him, and he did help a friend of mine, black male, from college to get appointed to West Point (although my friend was too dumb to follow through). You would know better as my run-ins with him were faith-based from my young, stupid religious days not politics. Yes, I remember the disconnect, most pointedly in the 96 VP debate. Kemp had to mouth the Dole platform which he did believe in and boy did it show. I think the Trump Pence gulf will be more entertaining...or maybe not. Both Trump and Pence appeal to emotion rather than intellect, just from secular and religious angles.
