I just can't shake the notion that being discreet equals hiding to many in the LGBTQI community.

Barry Manilow has always kept his private life private. But now, he’s ready to talk.

The singer opened up in the latest issue of PEOPLE about his decades-long, secret relationship with manager Garry Kief.

“I’m so private. I always have been,” he said.

Early in his life, Manilow married his high school sweetheart, Susan Deixler shortly after graduation. He didn’t struggle with his sexuality during their one year of marriage.

“I was out making music every night, sowing my wild oats. I was too young. I wasn’t ready to settle down,” he said. “I just was not ready for marriage.”

In 1978, after achieving fame in the music industry, he met Kief.

“I knew that this was it,” said Manilow. “I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that.”

Soon after they met, Kief became Manilow’s manager — a title he still maintains today. The couple has maintained a relationship for the last 39 years and kept most of their private lives a secret from the public. Manilow even went out with rumored girlfriend Linda Allen during his relationship with Kief.

In April 2014, the couple decided to tie the knot at their Palm Springs estate. Shortly after, news of Manilow’s sexuality and their marriage made headlines.

Manilow looks at the news as “a blessing and a curse.”

“I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything,” he admitted. “When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful, strangers commenting, ‘Great for you!’ I’m just so grateful for it.”

Do you think there is a difference between being discreet and lying by omission? From what I have read, there is nothing but serious praise coming to Manilow and his SO.

I don't have a problem with folk being out or closeted. I just don't think being discreet is hiding as many in the community do.

Is it me or does "The Community" sound more sexy than "LGBTQ"

I really don't like how some of the Gays™ are doing the "this is news?" thing. That man didn't have to tell/confirm it for anyone. Not one person yet The Community for all the talk about being welcoming and supportive, at least a few black ones, sure have a lot to say.

If we are not going to support people coming out what makes them think people are actually going to be doing it regardless if you know their "tea" or not?

I'm sorry but in this case I was one of the "this is news?" people, but didn't really care one way or the other. Would be like turning on the TV and finding out for certain that any number of B-list TV or music people we always knew were probably gay growing up finally and formally announced (Richard Simmons, Tony Randall, Liberace, Paul Lynde, Charles Nelson Reilly)

    But good for him.

He was already 'outed' regarding him getting officially legally married to his guy of 39 years as was noted, so this is kind of anti-climactic. But still good for him-it is a powerful thing to be able to say it-so he never have to 'stop and think' again at least regarding this. It seems like he still struggled with 'what people would think' and all.

But yeah, I get some of the snickering also. Helen Keller would have known he was gay. I mean the guy got his start with 'Bathhouse Bette' Bette Midler in the seventies while performing in gay bathhouses clad in only a white towel-yeah a straight guy would have done that back then LOL! My teen gaydar didn't even 'ping' back in the day, it just looked at me in surprise and said 'really-you need me on this one?'

LOL..yeah these ones were a bit obvious. 'But they are just confirmed bachelors!!!!' lol.

Sorry for the double post...but to me...discreet is choosing to have your personal life personal and private. 'Closeted' is feeling you have to keep your personal life-and especially being gay-personal and private. That is just the way I look at it. Some people stay closeted for good reasons though-they might lose their job or get evicted if the info got out-and you know how The Gayscan be.

I kind of look at NIck D. as an example of 'discreet'-he is not going around telling everyone he is gay, but if someone comes up and directly asks him, I don't think he would lie about it. I guess you would also fit that as well.

What you do in your personal life sexually, unless it is a crime, should be as secretive as a password. Mind your business!

Never been with a girl just to hide myself. That part I don't agree with. But I do admire how old skool people keep things private. I love that about them.

Well, it was the seventies, so folks may have had problems with detection equipment back them, what with all the disco and men's fashions and all. I was too young to know what gay was; I didn't even get the joke behind Threes Company and Jack Tripper until the show was in syndication, or Billy Crystals character on Soap. I just remember Manilow as being one of those stars that were everywhere on TV as a kid, on every Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, or Dinah Shore episode like John Denver and Marvin Hamlisch. The one song of his I liked was " Copa Cabana" one of the cheesiest post-Saturday Night Fever "white disco" songs ever recorded. But damn, I used to see the lyrics of that song in my head like a Cecil B DeMille b-movie lol! Hell, they made movies out of crappy songs like "Convoy" and "Harper Valley PTA" what happened to "FAYE DUNAWAY IS LOLA, IN BOB FOSSE'S COPA CABANA!" Rotfl

^^ Faye would have been a good Lola lol. I saw where someone said on Twitter, "Don't let his sexuality distract you from the fact that a terrible murder occurred at the Copacabana!" hahaha.

I think the rainbow flag waving radical queer activists should take their activist hats off for minute and cut Barry Manilow a break. I can understand why a gay man of his generation would keep his private life private, especially with him being in the entertainment business. Also as @ColumbusGuy has said he is clockable so I don't see what all the fuss is about.
