Being that I'm black and gay and kinda more on the feminine and flamboyant side. I'm 27 and alone. I don't have any friends, not much support from family. I've never been in love.

I have continual bouts of depression.

People then avoid you and think you're crazy. You are told to get professional help etc.

What I don't understand, why is depression seen as negative?

To me, I felt that depression was a common thing to experience.

I also think my depression is caused due to things I cannot change. Example me being gay and being black as well and more feminine. I have issues interacting with both women and other men and finding love.

I feel the only way to cure my depression, is if I had a more privileged life.

I also don't like taking anti depressants, or going to therapy really. I mean therapy I'm kinda on the fence about, but no. I'm not taking any meds.

I just don't understand, why is depression is seen like that?

Well, I think most people experience some form of depression. And there is nothing wrong with seeing a therapist for help. I can understand not taking meds. I try not to take meds. I even try to avoid aspirin.

I do believe in trying to improve yourself, but maybe you're focusing to much on the things that you can not change. Maybe you're trying to hard on "finding love" Finding friends can be hard. It is/was for me, especially since I'm an introvert and tend to be a quiet person. What helped was just getting out there and not having any expectations. it was hard sometimes. If I only talked to someone for 15 minutes and that was it, then I moved on. I eventually meet a few people and we dated for a little while.

I also tried to stay busy with things that I liked to do. I joined a gym. I joined a gay softball league a few years ago and made a few friends there. Try to find some groups to join that share your interest. Meetup.com might be a good place to check. if you like softball Home - North American Gay Amateur Athletic Allliance

    You should go see someone.
For me I hit a bad patch in life did one session with a professional and she gave me some tips. I learned I have Situational anxiety.
Some family members didn't understand why I would do that and felt all I needed to do was pray.

I was really surprised how good it felt just talking to a professional. I was not crazy. I also didn't want any meds and felt I had the ability to help myself just with some help.

Sometimes I imagine what my life would be if I came from a more privileged life. The things and situations I just wouldn't have to worry about. But that's not my life so I have to learn how to cope and push on.

The black community seems to have a problem with mental health and seeking professional help. Too many of us think you can pray depression and other mental health problems away. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. I've found therapy to be helpful and it gives me a chance to vent. As a general rule I don't have a problem or objection to medicine however I'm not a fan of anti-depressants. Many of them slow down your metabolism and cause weight gain. I've found lifting weights to be an excellent stress reliever. In addition to physical benefits. I feel more energetic and less depressed.

Last Thanksgiving, I walked into a room and found my patient actively dying. I tried to resuscitate him- he died anyways. It, along with a thousand other cuts, drove me to therapy.

Therapy is not a dirty word. Neither is medication. Asking for help is the first step in the process of getting and feeling better.

I'm glad that so many people here have lent their voices to ending the stigma surrounding treatment of mood disorders. It's my pleasure to offer mine too.

    YES. YES. YES. YES.

How could I forget that? That is so true. So much stigma with mental health in the black community.

Most of it is due to the fact black people trust and believe and obey their spiritually or religion. Such as Christianity which is a positive gateway for many blacks.

What's even crazy is that I am a Gay Christian. lol

    How do you?

To me that's the most fucked up thing. Being black and gay and alone. I just wish I had another life sometimes.

Its also good to create goals and focus on things u would like to accomplish. Set up a pinterest or dream board chart. Collect pictures of things u would like to experience and accomplish.

Oh no. I'm not messing with that vision board shit. That's what fucked me up originally. Having pictures/videos of guys I'm crushing on, things I'm saving up to buy. etc.

I figure it's all up to god really.
