Fox's New Show 9-1-1

I actually plan to watch this but not because the guy is DL. But you're spot on. I'm tired of DL/closeted bi men being tropes and by extension, labeled as villains because of.

depictions of blk ppl seem pretty limiting and trope-filled across the board, including non-heterosexual blk male characters. in my view, the main issue is that diversity convos have to shift from identity politics (who you see) to power. blk writers, blk gay writers, showrunners, etc still dont have the power to determine which of our stories are being told, even though we may see more blk faces on screen.

 

I wondered why she was beating up on him during the commercial. I do agree about representations about black (gay) men in media. Although we have come a long way (and still have a way to go), don't you think that it should be shown because DL men still exist and they're coming out to their wives regardless of their race every day?

 

I can't think of many, maybe just one Brokeback Mountain (Bottoms).

There are lots of DL white guys and definitely Latinos and Indonesian men. It's not just white writers though, Black Heterobots (especially single black women) are obsessed with Men on the DL and exposing bruthas, waiting for the opportunity to say that DL dude ain't a "real man" and Heterobot fellas can tag someone as "Suspect" amongst their Neanderthal brethrens, yet Denzel, the stereotypical vagabond over here with seven kids and four different baby mamas will get more respect because he's a fellow Heterobot that randomly quotes ancient Judeo principals that none of them can follow themselves.

Being a writer myself, I would have did a quick gender swap and I would have mocked (trolled) them by letting them fall into their own Heterobot DL tracking laser beam shaming, but instead have Rockmand be the straight family man and have Angela be on the DL with an old wealthy white woman played by Meryl Streep, oh and his son turns out to be gay too.

The Heterobots wouldn't be able to handle it, screaming, shouting and foaming at the mouth....oh and I would put it on Netflix cause they'd be in an uproar to boycott Fox for trying to destroy the image of the black family by pushing the "gay agenda" on them since it doesn't matter that they have had a "straight agenda" they've been pushing since Adam and Eve (two naked white folks) were dancing in the Secret Garden of Eden (Africa) but let them tell it, they know the Lord "personally".

 

No not really but that's because I don't watch many shows featuring non-black leads or w/o a predominantly non-black cast. You and @Nick Delmacy would know better than me.
