    ‘Deploy or Get Out’ Is Trump Administration Military Policy

    President Donald Trump is preparing to discharge U.S. Military service members living with HIV.

    “A person’s HIV status wasn’t always an obstacle to service,” Matt Baume writes at Condé Nast’s Them. But, “a new Trump-administration policy would aim to clear the military of anyone living with HIV.”

    How?

    On Valentine’s Day Trump instituted a new policy for the military. Instead of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” it’s called, “Deploy or Get Out.”

    Under the new policy, approved by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, military personnel who are medically unable to deploy, according to the Military Times, must be discharged after 12 months. Troops who are pregnant are exempt from the policy.

    Baume reports that “due to an antiquated policy dating back to the early days of the epidemic, HIV+ servicemembers are considered undeployable.” President Barack Obama did not discharge HIV-positive troops.

    According to Lambda Legal senior counsel Scott Schoettes, about 1200 service members are living with HIV.

    “There are lots of qualified people who serve in positions that doesn’t require them to deploy. It seems foolish to get rid of those people,” Schoettes says.

    Foolish especially since for many treatment for HIV can be just a pill a day and occasional blood tests, Baume says.

    “Living with HIV today is much different than it was 25 years ago,” said Carlos del Rio, MD, an Emory University medical professor and co-director of the Emory Center for AIDS Research, in a statement provided by Lambda Legal. “Today, with appropriate treatment, there is no reason a person living with HIV shouldn’t be able to serve in any capacity in the military.”

    A federal lawsuit to block the Pentagon from discharging HIV-positive service members was “filed in May by Nicholas Harrison, a 41-year-old Oklahoman whose National Guard unit was deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and Kuwait in 2011, according to the complaint,” Bloomberg reports. “Under the new policy, HIV-positive service members are already being discharged and having their duties restricted, according to his suit.”

    The “Deploy or Get Out” policy will, depending on the outcome of court cases, also be used by Trump and Mattis to discharge transgender service members. It goes into mandatory effect October 1.

    On one hand, I agree. You and I know this is medical bullshit. I deployed to Iraq with people who were on regular meds for various ailments. So, from a strictly civil liberties viewpoint, yeah, they should fight it...

    On the other hand, I say to those HIV+ folk, use your GI Bill, any other benefits, and get the fuck out for your own personal development and safety. Let Trump and all his MAGAts die for any stupid wars his tiny dick gets semi-hard for (see y’all when that Iran invasion goes south, dumb asses! Lol)

    I just don't understand why deny people who are able and want to serve. At the end of the day it's about having enough people to fill positions anyway.

    From my perspective, the Army has always had a heavy black representation as well as the Air Force but the Army isn't far behind from the Marines.

    @mojoreece Theres always been a bit of division between officers and enlisted in the armed forces, depending on job and education of the service member, so yeah, officers, particularly serious ones that are highly intelligent probably grit their teeth at Trump and just pray they can get to military retirement, get out, and collect that pension in peace.

    What’s happened is that today’s GOP white males are mostly MAGA, Fox News chugging, inbred uneducated morons who are “chairborne rangers”...listen to a lot of bad country music, wave flags, and NEVER SERVED.

    That’s why you have this current crew so ready to infest the military with alt-right bullshit. In addition to the white supremacist element that’s always been in the military, the chairborne never had to put in real military work, or, are too stupid to understand the vital one-two punch of the State Dept and the DoD (diplomacy first, military action last). Not an Alexander Haig, Dwight Eisenhower, Bob Dole, George Bush Sr., or Warren Rudman in the bunch. Even “Mr. Conservative” Barry Goldwater, the former Air Force officer and war veteran who lost to Johnson in 1964, was for eliminating DADT in the 90s before it was fashionable (famously quipping that you don’t need to be straight in the military, you just need to be able to shoot straight).

    As I mentioned, their unrealistic shit is eventually going to hit the fan. Look how long it took us to straighten out our mess in Iraq (two presidencies), the mess in Afghanistan (the new Hundred Year’s War), and then think about what, in addition to Trump’s economic policies, what fucking militarily with Iran—-who, if shit gets serious, will be assisted by China and Russia, while our former “allies” sit on their hands, unlike Desert Storm—-will do to America.

    Funny Trump is trying to kick people out who want to serve like transgender people and people who are HIV+ but this coward did everything in his power to avoid the draft. Trump even mocked John McCain for being a POW. Trump is a fake patriot and an all around piece of shit!
