I'm happy Black gay men getting that Netflix money and this doesn't appear to be the typical Bravo Housewife drama. Also good to see two married Black men. Just sucks that folk find masculine leaning Black gay men lives too boring to receive equal representation.

Netflix unveiled the first trailer for “Styling Hollywood,” starring Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis, on Thursday. The series follows celebrity stylist Bolden and Curtis, an interior designer, who run the Los Angeles-based lifestyle company, JSN Studio. The two men combine their talents to curate “Black girl magic” for Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union and Ava DuVernay, among other stars.

Yeah. Another reality tv show to add to the several others.

And they just had to assume that no gay or bi men work in other career fields. Smh

Everyone knows black, gay AND masculine is just all too much for the majority female audience who will watch this (like a science experiment so they can try to pick up more signs to be able to tell if their men are 'down low brothas') to digest. What woman wants to watch 2 masculine men 'gone to waste'?!

Congrats to them, but I'm good.

Also, do women even work in the fashion/beauty/styling industries anymore? Now that it's practically a requirement for all black female 'celebs' to have 'a gay' on the opposite arm of the one holding the bag he picked out for her to wear, I wonder how long it'll be before females start marching against the oppression they feel in the male dominated beauty/styling industry...

I wonder if the "masculine leaning black gay men" the both of you refer to as either too boring for equal representation or too much for the majority female audience to handle, actually do exist by television standards?

Or is it that many of those "masculine leaning black gay men" are still so self loathing and afraid/shame of themselves that they wouldn't dare be on television in the first place?

It seems the industries that entertainment likes to focus on and make shows about are highly creative in nature (fashion/interior design/ food chefs) or they may highlight a person of great talent such as athletic or music/dance.

The percentage of "masculine leaning black gay men" that are in creative fields at a high enough level to have a television show is probably .00000001%. Not to mention the pro athletes or music artist that are "masculine, black, and gay" are undoubtedly still closeted as fuck. No show there.

The more effeminate black gay men seem to have much more of stronghold on being bosses in creative fields, have interesting/entertaining personalities, and more important than anything has the balls the be open and proud about it.

No offense homie but this is an outdated take. We're living in a post "Discreet City" age. Just look at all of the masculine gay fame seekers on social media and all these shitty black gay web series. They exist and they want the attention/spotlight. The producers just don't want to put them on...

The only exception I can find on TV right now is masculine openly gay former NCAA football player Brandon Davis (who we've discussed in the past), currently featured on MTV's Are You The One.

I never said it was too much for the women to handle. I think it'd be as easy to handle as anything else that's essentially 'foreign' based on lack of exposure. Kinda like Black people being normal people with jobs, families and typical lives, before the Cosby show came along.

What I was saying tho, is that feminine gay men in fashion and beauty are not at all foreign to the heavily black female audience that will make up their viewership, (the press release literally talks about 2 black men combining their talents to create 'black girl magic'...) AND that there isn't the disdain for these guys that there would be from said audience, if either of the men were masculine enough for the women who make up said audience to want to fuk them.

Not sure exactly where the "outdated" take your referring exist in my comment. I can however admit that I am unaware of many of the masculine gay fame seekers that exist in social media and black gay web series. I dont watch many of those as well as Im not a big social media person. Im aware of some of the more popular ones you guys have made articles about on here, but havent dived deep in many of them

What I am referring to is when it comes to the big networks in media such as the Netfilxs, HBO's, Amazon, and old televison networks, if a gay person regardless of color gets a show they often are very big in their industry and what they do. Nate Berkus for interior design, Rupual for drag performance, etc.

    Now when you say,
Do they also have huge success in their field as well as the personality for the major networks to invest into and make a show out of? Im not denying some of what you guys are suggesting as pure BS, what im saying is that I think its more than a "masculine black gay man agenda to ban".

These gay men that get their own shows are often creative people who are very big in their field and are also out and proud with who they are and who they love. Which also plays into their success.

I cant think of a masculine black gay man that is also at that level to have their own show. But have no problem standing corrected so if you know of one, please feel free to share with me.

BTW - this may be a different topic, but along the same line as this conversation, I would hope some of what is being said in this thread isnt a "oh poor little masculine black gay man" routine how he cant get shows and representation is media like the effeminate black gay men are doing.

Because that literally is the equivalent of white men saying something like, "why do black men dominate sports. we want to be included too as white men" or any analogy better than that with the basic groundwork as PRIVILEGE.

White men have it all in society with the exception of dominating sports as players. When in comes to being black and gay, masculine black gay men still have everything in the world with the exception being media success as personalities or characters.

Would it be great to see? Hell yeah. Absolutely. But as masculine gay black men, we are still the most desired gay men, can walk the streets comfortably, can go stealth and have others automatically assume we're straight therefore "better" and not one of "those" gay men, etc. etc.

The effeminate black gay man while may having it better today then years pass, still catch HELL. Especially and specifically outside of cities like Atlanta and New York. They are not desired and if they are seldom is it openly. Rupaul isnt looked at as a sex symbol. Therefore many of them are single as fuck and dont have active sex lives. Their looked down upon at many of the all black gay parties so in turn they try to be more masculine by wearing fitted baseball caps and pretending to be at some kind of masculine level thats deemed acceptable so they can at least get laid , the general black community in frowns at them walking down the street wearing heels or "swishing". Even black women will let those guys do their make-up, hair, and talk about them like crazy behind their back and the first to call them faggot like that gospel lady Kim Burrell and that rapper Khia.

Bottom line is yes I would love to see masculine gay men represented in hit shows on major networks, but we good in so many other areas and life.

I do, however, realize that this platform may have been created to express the "oh poor little masculine black gay man" position as it pertains to matters. In which in that aspect, I digress.

That's subjective. In my opinion, these feminine hair dressers and stylists aren't at the level to have their own show. Apparently you think they are. Whatever floats your boat. I can think of tons of masculine black gay men who I would love to see in a TV series. I've highlighted many of them on this website over the last 7 years. But again, to each his own.

(your last sentence) But that is being aware.

In this way, I'm the exact same way as you. I only know of them through this space because you know I don't do social media, reality tv, web-series, etc as well.

I understand and can agree with your points here, nonetheless; the reason I co-signed @nick's statement is because for me it's the totality of it. The overwhelming majority of us on tv fit into a tropey stereotypical mold.

As far as the Netflix series, I'm more accepting and wish them success because -even though tropey- , I didn't see drinks being thrown or hair being pulled and zero windmills. So at least it's focusing on their day-to-day careers and I'm happy for them.

Well now your just assuming and that's not fair. Im actually pretty apathetic about reality shows in totality.

I watch very dark shows that involve serial killers or anything capturing a morose sense of being. Such as Mindhunter on Netflix, Black Mirror, or True Detective on HBO. So all in all whether its a gay masculine or gay feminine show it most likely wouldn't float my boat as it doesn't correspond with my dark soul. LOL.

Its just casually knowing the landscape of who makes up the majority of television audiences, I see why gay "clown feminine" types get the shows. But we can agree to disagree on this topic now.

I can say I continue to give you and @OckyDub props for creating this space for conversation and persepctives on different topics. In additon specifically engaging with others who dont take the exact same point of view as you. It would be so boring if everyone agreed right away with everything you said.

So @OckyDub , describe for me your ideal reality show involving masculine gay men. What would we see them doing on a daily basis? The reason I ask is because reality shows, by their very nature, require tons of drama, hand gestures, drink throwing, shade throwing, hair pulling, gossip, etc. If masculine gay men, by nature, don't engage in such behavior, then what would they be doing to entertain folk who want to watch the ratchetry?

TV is full of reality shows. Discovery channel, HGTV, Cooking channel, Travel channel...numerous cable networks show reality tv shows through out the day m-f. None have the type of drama described above. I think your ideals about what a reality show consists of is skewed.

But to answer your question...a reality tv show that follows Black non-heterosexual masculine leaning male police officers. We see their day-to-day, their home life, and the obstacles they face at the job concerning their sexualities.

The vast majority of Reality shows aren't about police officers, fire fighters etc. The ones that are about everyday jobs like Boston Med, don't last long. Folk only want to watch buffoonery which plays well on reality television. My point is that reality television may not be the best format to showcase masculine men at all so no point in trying to force that issue. Do people find the lives of masculine gay men boring? Hell, I think the lives of most straight people are boring when compared to the craziness of reality tv. When you think about who is willing to turn up and act a fool just for notoriety, fem gay men and women definitely come to mind.

    Skewed Views...

There was a Black ghost hunter show on I saw about 2 yrs ago. I don't know if its still on because plenty of shows in the genre don't last but it was something a lil bit different. I bring it up because not only were they Black men but one to me seemed like he was down. The 'lil bit different' for me also is why I think the reality show 'Dhani Tackles the Globe' was revolutionary on a small scale.

Reality TV is also River Monsters, UFO Hunters, Forensic Files, The First 48, Ghost Hunters, etc. in addition to House Wives. The shows I mentioned all had multiple seasons or are still on. They've been very popular or have a cult following, in addition to some of them having had 'non-drink throwing' gay people on them at some point.

Another example. If I had any type of power or influence in the cable network world, I would love to see a home- real estate- flip type show that featured the below dude who my spidey senses tell me something.

But you're echoing my point. The shows you mention are reality shows but the focus is not on the casts' private sexual orientation or personal lives to the extent it is in the most popular reality shows. As you've stated, these shows may have had gay men on them but they were not acting out in a way to draw attention to their sexuality. Not trying to be funny, but i'm beginning to think that you don't necessarily need to have masculine gay men all over your television. I just think you want shows with masculine content and points of view regardless of the people in them.

The closest thing I’ve seen lately is Andre Braugher’s police chief on Brooklyn 99 (that character is so like me it’s ridiculous). It’s a shame a fictional character is as close as you can get; on the other hand, like I always tell whiny woke black folk and crybaby MAGA whites complaining about “representation”, this is the Internet age. Costs next to nothing to start a YouTube channel if you feel mainstream media doesn’t “represent” you. Same goes for masculine black gay men.

    1. I would say reference previous threads about how Youtube demonetizes channels and shows of LGBTQ content creators for frivolous reasons. Not only that, many Youtubers don't even get paid via Youtube but via donations.

    2. Why do people make statements like this? So if folk think Dark Phoenix sucks they should quit their jobs and move to Hollywood with zero know-how or experience to open a film studio to make films? A consumer / customer is not a content creator.

ZZZZZ Snore ... lol. Anyone is a content creator if they want to be one in the digital age. Americans, black and white, straight and gay, are lazy crybabies and whiners. If you don’t like what someone else produces, produce your own. Every mustard tree starts with a seed (I think some hippie dude said that awhile ago).

Going back to reading this book illustrated by some unknown black dude named Kadir Nelson. I think he started as a nobody who didn’t have any Hollywood experience, did a few paintings on his own as a teenager, got better and better, and now creates content for everyone from Drake to the New Yorker to Steven Spielberg. Funny how nobodies that work instead of whine eventually become those “famous content creators.”

I also know these two talented brothers in ATL who worked and created something totally out of “nothing”. I think it’s called Cypher Avenue or something...

Not picking on you in particular Ock, I just hate that mentality (from anyone) that says no one outside conglomerates can be a “content creator”. If black masculine gay men want “representation” let them put their shekels together and make something. As I told y’all before I’m a Booker T/Marcus Garvey bro. I like to create my own shit instead of waiting on others to acknowledge me.

The only difference between an amateur content creator and a professional content creator, big or small, is whether or not someone pays for your shit...

Oh your talking about Ghost Brothers. I liked the idea of that show but could never really get into it myself. Dalen use to be on "I want to work for diddy season 2" back in the day. @Nick Delmacy do u know ;) Dalen or Juswan their both CAU alum.

100dap Don't mean to dive in to porn, but I think a good example of this would be Tim Tales (tim kruger). He creates better content than the big companies. He also has a diverse set of actors (mostly masc) w/ just his him filming (w/ good equipment) inside n outside his house.

I will say that, although he's not officially "Out" like those stylist queers, Liam Charles is clealy "family" and his UK cooking show is cool. I would def welcome more non-fabulous guys like him to get chances.

And then there's friends of The Ave Deondray and Quincey on that OWN docu show, "Black Love."

Show "us" in different ways than the stereotypes about being hairdressers and fashion stylists, that's all we're saying.

Well the consensus is that 'they' are not gonna show 'us' so therefore only 'us' can show 'us' and to do so means starting your own company even though you're consumer / customer.

Don't know if you're referring to investors or customers but as it relates to Black non-heterosexual, non-porn content created by Black men; I don't see dollars pouring in. That's just not opinion but also based on the testimony of Black content creators we have personally spoken with. Hell, if Spike Lee struggles to get funding...
