A Cook County, Illinois, grand jury has returned a six-count indictment against actor Jussie Smollett for making false reports to police that he was a victim of a hate crime, a special prosecutor said Tuesday.

Smollett, who is gay and black, said he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack near his Chicago apartment on January 29, 2019.

Chicago police investigated the case as a hate crime but later said the actor orchestrated the incident and paid two men who were acquaintances from the TV show on which he starred -- brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo -- to stage the incident for publicity. The former "Empire" actor has repeatedly denied making up or orchestrating the attack.

Dan K. Webb, the special prosecutor assigned in August to investigate how local prosecutors handled the TV actor's case, said in a statement his office "has now completed all of its investigative steps regarding Jussie Smollett, and has made the decision to further prosecute Mr. Smollett."
"Based on the recommendation of the OSP (Office of the Special Prosecutor), a Cook County grand jury returned a six-count indictment charging Jussie Smollett with making four separate false reports to Chicago Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing that he was not the victim of a crime," the statement said.

Webb, a former US attorney, concluded that Smollett's prosecution is "in the interest of justice."
Several factors went into Webb's determination, "including the extensive nature of Mr. Smollett's false police reports, and the resources expended by the Chicago Police Department to investigate these false reports."
Smollett was initially indicted in March on 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct, but Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx suddenly dropped all charges weeks later. Prosecutors said Smollett had forfeited $10,000 in bail money and done community service.

Whether or not he lied, I think our justice system is spending a disproportionate amount of time and effort dealing with his case when they could be addressing more important matters. It's still a symptom of a racist system.

It's only a story to people outside Chicago like undercover hoteps and black neoliberals (Dave Chappelle), secretly racist white liberals like Rahm Emmanuel, and the mainstream media which loves high-tech lynching of flawed black men like Smollett and OJ and Snoop rather than focusing on America's ever present white supremacy (thank God for journalists like Michael Harriot).

Yeah, black folk here knew it was a false report but once Smollett paid back the cost of investigation, native born black Chicagoans like my partner were "out of site out of mind". Smollett cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars. Two hundred years of Chicago white supremacy (redlining, riot, police brutality, access to health care) has cost black people hundreds of millions of dollars.

Finally, its telling that even the Courts are siding with our County Prosecutor in how she handled the case, and that Sen. Tammy Duckworth endorsed her for reelection.

Say what you will about racism and white supremacy, but Jussie wanted this to be a big story and he got his wish. He not only embarrassed himself, he embarrassed the city of Chicago and wasted a lot of time, money and resources that could have gone to solving legitimate crimes in the city. And for the record, he only paid a $10k fine, not the "hundreds of thousands of dollars" that @Winston Smith admits he cost the city.

And we need to get past the knee jerk "white supremacy" shouting whenever a Black man/woman fucks up and gets dragged for it. If you fuck up, you should pay the consequences. You get no participation trophies just for being Black and a fuck up. If this were a case of Jussie minding his own business and getting framed into some drama to bring down his character, that would be another story. But he orchestrated a hoax and got national spotlight from it, even involved the President of the United States in this hoax. So like I said, he wanted this to be a big thing and he got his wish.

I said what I said. Where did I say that Smollett was a victim and not responsible for his actions? You're deliberately ignoring that I said it was a major story only to non-Chicagoans, just like I'm sure there is all kinds of stuff that go on in your city that may seem important to me, but trivial to mon-ATLiens.

Celebrities like Common, Chance the Rapper, and major athletes are doing all kinds of things on a daily basis in Chicago (not to speak of all the non-celebs making things happen) that never get the same coverage. But hey, as long as the Gay OJ gets wall-to-wall coverage, who cares?

Again, Jussie wanted this story to go beyond Chicago and he got his wish. You and others can use this retort ad nauseam but the fact remains that this was a big NATIONAL story when it first broke, a story that involved the President of the United States and Dem candidates running for office. Not to mention that cringe-worthy ABC NEWS interview with Robin Roberts who, as far as I know, is not a local Chicago reporter on a local Chicago news program.

So the fact that non-Chicagoans don't care anymore is irrelevant now. It started as a "major" political story in a highly political and polarized climate because that's what Jussie wanted, so I'm not surprised that the Chicago D.A.s office is still ringing this bell.

If Jussie had only faked a break-in to his condo and got busted for it, that would be another story. But he faked a politically motivated hate crime and caused a major uproar across the country. If anything, social justice advocates should be more pissed at Jussie for his actions when there are so many legitimate hate crimes being perpetrated across the U.S., not giving him a pass just because y'all are tired of hearing about him.

Lastly, I wouldn't call this "wall to wall coverage." He's mentioned sporadically at best. And fact checking your comment, Jussie is "The Gay Tupac," not the Gay OJ. :shades:

Gay Tupac? He got beat up and shot by Suge Knight? Fake news!

I now classify this subject as politics, so it’s going into my 2020 ignore bin. Although I still reserve the right to gloat when Rush Limbaugh kicks the bucket....

    It's complicated
I just want Jussie and Mo'Nique to both go far away.

But on a serious note, this has pretty much cost Jussie his career. Black people already don't like gay people so he can't turn to us for redemption and white people pissed that he lied to them. Ion know how he's going to make a living now beyond becoming a "massage therapist" but I wish him the best.
