Empire Returns - Official Season 2 Discussion Thread

I am BEYOND READY!!!

 

Anyone else worried they're driving expectations too high?

 

At times I hope the season 2 meets with the hype surrounding it but I am sure they know what they are doing.

 

Yea, I am really hoping that season 2 doesn't disappoint either.

 

Lookin forward to this as well. I went into Season I thinking I wasn't gonna like it but, thoroughly enjoyed it. LOL

 

I love the show. I am definitely ready for its return.

 

Yeah, I'm worried they're hyping this up too much. I will be watching though. They definitely should keep the Australian dude around for a little bit. His accent makes him 10x more attractive.

 

I can not wait! TV is one reason the fall isn't so bad in the midwest.

 

I'm actually pretty excited for this show to come back. The first season was pretty good. The highlights were definitely Taraji and Jussie. I remember Jussie from the Patrik Ian Polk movie, the Skinny. I don't remember him being that great in that movie though. He may have taken some acting classes between then and now because he's light years ahead from where he used to be. I could've done without Naomi Campbell though. There are plenty of other other black women that could have played that part. Not really a fan of hers. Hopefully she doesn't come back for the next season.

 

I LOVE me some EMPIRE! I just hope it lives up to its "hype"with the season 2 premiere, because usually some shows start off good but eventually become stale after awhile.

And l would hate for that to happen to EMPIRE because it's such a great show with so much potential not to mention the success it has gained especially with an all black cast on a major network.

I'll be watching tonight with a snack of course lol

The first 40 minutes were fun but the last 20 minutes was when shit got serious!

 

Good first episode I hate that Jamal and cookie coming apart tho

 

I thought the first episode was okay, it was too much going on. Too many cameos, too much storyline, I guess.
Not as much original music either, which was a let down for me, so I hope that continues with the rest of the season.

 

Am I the only (SGL or female) black person who's not watching empire? I ma wait for that shit to get on hulu for a few episodes lol

 

Am I the only one who thinks the show is basic and way to cameo heavy and can not hold a candle to Starz's Power??

 

l agree although l do enjoy watching EMPIRE however, Lee Daniels and company are doing the most with the cameos and last night's episode proved how ridiculous they're getting. I'm not feeling it and l think it could hurt the show in the future.

As for POWER, it's an incredible show and l can't wait til it returns

Okay, if season 1 was a train wreck, episode 1 of season 2 is one of those California disaster movies where the train is speeding along the coast about to cross this high bridge as a tsunami set off by a killer Cali earthquake approaches. Which all translates to I loved it! Agree with Royal Ebony and Sauce 126 that the cameos are too much and with Sauce 126 that it needed more music. Sticking with it nevertheless.

 

So I'm watching the first episode on HULU right now and it just irritated my WHOLE life that Ms. Lawrence from RHOA was on there. I am not a fan.

 

Were you guys feeling this more than the premiere? Less cameo-ed, slower pace, less wow-factor-just-because.. and more focused on the dynamic of the family.

I'd like to see a more Andre based episode, he needs one, I find him to be the most interesting character.

The music this season is a disaster though. Terrance bruh you gave better delivery in Hustle n Flow - or did he? LMAO

 

Yeah after all the hype died down it definitely felt like a episode storywise. My heart really went out to Andre when he confronted his dad last night, as he made some really valid points. It made me reevaluate my opinion of him as a character because I didn't like all the scheming he and Rhonda did in the first season but he has problems that have been utterly ignored that absolutely shouldn't have been.

He represents a growing number of people that aren't bad but need help and don't get it based on the stigma society places on mental illness so in many ways he's beginning to grow on me as a character. I'd like to see him grow from he's past mistakes!!

I've come to appreciate Andre's character more and more. I feel sad for him and can relate to his character in so many ways. Like Andre, l'm the oldest of two brothers and also suffer with mental illness, and it's something l struggle with everyday and it isn't easy. l've noticed especially in the black community, the topic of mental illness is often ignored sadly. So that scene between Andre and his father hit home for me.

It's evident Andre clearly can run EMPIRE better than his siblings however all of his credentials and hard work goes unnoticed and is ignored which is messed up.

This episode was better than last weeks premiere. l just wish Lee Daniels would chill with all the cameos because its becoming redundant and boring.

 

While we are on Andre - and I agree that he deserves more attention -- what was going on int he cutaway flashback with his father? Are they trying to tell us 1) Andre is not his son? or 2) Cookie is not his mother? See problems with both but otherwise can't figure that one out. what say you?

 

See, they didn't really execute that Scene right because a lot of people thought that too but Kelly Roland (the mom) was actually playing Luscious's mom and that was supposed to be baby luscious lol. I was confused too, but I think they're trying to hint at his mom having a history of mental illness as well.

 

Kelly Rowland (why?) is Lucious' mother and she has a mental disorder. That is why Lucious is giving Andre the cold shoulder.

 

Wow. If that is the case you are absolutely right that they did not play it well. I've checked in with lots of folks today and no one had that take, but it certainly makes more - but not a whole lot more given the ambiguity of the scene - sense. I mean if you are right, and you probably are, then it means that they are rushing too much, throwing too much into the blender too fast and leaving a whole lot of stuff splattered over the walls.
