In my neverending quest to find myself I do a lot of looking both online, in books, and everywhere else in between to see where I fit in and one thing that I often hear more often than not is that I can't do something because "black folk don't" but clearly since we are human beings we do.

My question is why do we say that about ourselves, why do we limit the things we can do. Is it a fear thing, not understanding the mechanics of those things, or just no interest.

And sorry if this is in the wrong thread

I was raised by my family to believe that there was only one thing that I might not be able to achieve in my lifetime and that was proved untrue by the election of Barack Obama.
The notion that "black folk don't" is to me such a narrow belief.
I have my comfort zones and am set in some of my ways but I've never been inflexible and I may not have always fully enjoyed whatever it was I tried but I've always been and don't ever see myself in the future not afraid to try something different and new.

I think a lot of things "black folks don't" do is they are worried about what other black folks think.

We don't want to be embarrassed. For example, back in 2001, I was all about Dance Dance Revolution. I played the sh!t out of that game. Even know if I stumble across a machine, I have to stick in some quarters.

Well back when it was "sweeping the nation" I remember several black people saying they were too embarrassed to play it or it was for "them Chinese" and "geeks". TF? I was a fully grown man who couldn't care less.

Life is about experienceing different things and sometimes we have to get out of our boxes and comfort zones to grow and learn. There's several things that if I had available to me when younger, I'd be interested in. Gymnastics, ice hockey, rugby, for examples. But it doesn't snow in the south and there's only ice rinks in the larger southern cities, gymnastics is basically the same. Too old for that now but I wouldn't be scared of an adult rugby league. And I at least known how to ice skate... Which is something else "black folks don't".

I like to consider myself a TRYAHOLIC. I like to try everything at least once. If I like it, I may go back and try it again. If I feel I could've had a better experience, I would try it again as well.

This is the truth.Idk why we put limits and labels on stuff .Nothing irks me quite like hearing the phrase "White Folks Music" or black people who haven't even tried to watch anything outside of BET.

Worrying about what others think like @ControlledXaos said. Black folk don'ts sometimes become black folk dos once enough visible, popular black people do it. There will be a minority of conservative folks that will hold out and claim everyone else has been brainwashed, but most will loosen up when a few role models provide their implicit permission. Plus, most just don't like change and will stay set in their ways after reaching a certain age. Maybe hating on these activities offers a false sense of superiority that hides their fear or inability to do certain things.

This whole "black folks don't" attitude is an extension of white supremacist thinking. They put limits on what we could and couldn't do for so long we now impose their ideas on ourselves without even realizing it. Anyone who is black who has non-stereotypical interests or ideas has their blackness questioned by other black people who are happy to stay in the tiny box white people made for us. Being both a sci-fi geek and an atheist I've experienced the whole "black folks don't" first hand.

When I worked at the a distribution center, the factory workers, 90% black, every time the main break room TV was on anything other than Bet or Bounce, it was turned to bounce or bet.

I used to be like... There's other stations on. Every one here has seen the Booty Call at least 10 times already.

I always tell people that I'll try anything twice because the first one may have been either a fluke or a bad batch.

That's the child like attitude of I like french fries so I'm only going to eat french fries.
The world offers baked potatoes, vichyssoise, au gratin, mashed, scalloped and so on.

Lol like when people always get ranch dressing! Lol

I think also there's some "group think" that has some affect as well. We have to be open to trying things new and that does not mean we "tryna be white" when we have interests in things like lacrosse, surfing, or yoga.

Yeah I first saw that series years ago. Some of the episodes are good. Some aren't.
