I just watched the "I'm a Witch" episode of "True Life". Did anyone else? It profiled two self-proclaimed witches; Apollo, a 19-year-old black gay male residing in Atlanta and 25-year-old Aracelie, a Wiccan and vampire.

Apollo got into witchcraft at age 9 when Harry Potter caught his interest. He didn't have an ideal childhood. He was bullied. Mom passed when he was 7. Dad is a Baptist preacher and they don't talk much. The strained relationship is likely why he grew up at his grandmother's house. (His grandma is only briefly featured and seems to have no issue with his sexuality, but is confused about his practice of magick.) Apollo is looking for fellow witches to date since he broke up with his incompatible muggle boyfriend. Fortunately, his older Instagram buddy and witch guide Increase visits town and they meet in person for the first time. His visit is brief but helps him feel less alone. He even inducts Apollo into his coven and says he wants to takes things to the next level spiritually and "maybe more".

Aracelie's been Wiccan all her life. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia while in college. Seeking alternative therapy rather than a life of medication. she realized that feeding off of others' energy helped her condition and joined the Vampire Court of Austin. (Vampires must be hot there; I think a different Austin vampire group is featured in True Life: I Want Respect for my Sect.) No blood, just energy.
    -----
I wonder if Apollo would have gotten into this if he hadn't had a troubled childhood.

Warlock refers to someone who uses their craft with negative intent I believe.

I'm kinda surprised Harry Potter was a catlyst for this interest for him.I guess he looked into all of the druid stuff.
    :mjlol:
I'm honestly surprised his black, southern grandma even acknowledges him with the two strikes of his "lifestyle" and wiccan practices.

I need to watch the full episode. But its surprise to see black wiccans/pagans. There is movement where black people adopting traditional African or African diasporic religions through Hoodoo, Voodoo, Vudun, Santeria, Ifa, Odinani, Candomblé, Akan relgion, Kemet etc. There is also a lot of gay black and afro latino people that are adopting these religions because they are more open to their sexuality.

Yeah. She seems religious but not overly so, and maybe her love of the grandson she raised overrides any objections to his sexuality. The brief scene featuring grandma plays like a witch coming out as if he's never told her. He's kinda fem and comes to her house with a broomstick and she reacts like it's not highly unusual behavior and. though she kinda "jokes" that being a witch might damn him, she seems more humorously bemused than offended or concerned. She's probably used to Apollo being somewhat eccentric and different than most people.

So I just wanted the full episode. The magic ceremony scenes with the two black gay men look like a scene from the movie Trois. O boy had lil yougin all the way excited lol. He was kissing on boy and kissed him when he had him join the coven. Why did he have the youngin join the coven and just dip smh? I wonder if he came to Atlanta just to smash cause you know they did it was just too much sexual chemistry on camera. They said yougin has not meet with old dude since he came to Atlanta and now the youngin has found other wtiches to be with smh. I also wonder why youngin has not connected with more afro-centeric spirituality (vudun, ifa, voodoo etc). Atlanta has a big Afrocentric community so if your leaning toward that side it would only be natural to try to connect with other black people that way. At least I would.

I was wondering about the origin of the tongues they were speaking in during their ritual, and yeah it looked like the beginning of a love scene. Increase did say he was in town from Denver to visit family. He briefly hinted at possibly taking their relationship to another level but maybe they're not into long-distance relationships, and why not mess around with your younger Instagram follower if you have the opportunity and there's mutual interest? The episode focused more on Apollo's connection with another gay guy than on the background of his practices. He never says what exactly he does or how he learned it. Maybe Apollo chooses his witch mentors based on how cute they are rather than just trying to joining the general spiritual community, or the producers deliberately focused on the "lonely outsider gets an opportunity to connect with someone like-minded; will they hookup or more?" plot.

Also, at first I thought Increase was just going to be his friend's Instagram handle or something, but he kept calling him that so I guess that's just his name or nickname. Interesting name.

I recently watched Leprechaun In The Hood for the first time. They should have gone fully over-the-top outrageous.

There's probably a market that would eat up a gay version of The Craft. It'll be like catty, reality TV-type dudes fighting, except they'll be throwing spells rather than shade (or probably a bit of both, really).

Heh. I was thinking less divas and more like 2006's male-centric The Covenant except with deliberate and direct homoeroticism rather than numerous vaguely homoerotic shots of swimmers in their speedos or that unnecessary shower and locker room scene. Looking up pics, star Steven Strait looks better when he aged and got a slightly more rugged look.

I guess those communities are technically religious or spiritual groups in which some members practice magic. I doubt many call themselves witches. Voodoo and hoodoo seem like the most commonly known Afro-American folk spiritualities, though that's due to Hollywood using their practicioners as shady characters or villains in movies like The Skeleton Key. If I never read otherwise, I'd almost think those kinds of people are unreal since their depictions sometimes seem supernatual rather than somewhat based on reality.

An old friend of mine once told me that he and his family have previously practiced magic (or magick, idk) and that he knows it's real. I'm open-minded and appreciated his openness but part of me was thinking, "Um, okay..."

In regards to referring male witches as warlocks we are typically not called warlocks anymore, we normally refer ourselves as just witches since we have both male and female members of all sexual orientation in our community and yes there was a very intimate ritual between Apollo and Increase but that is probably because they are very comfortable with each other. They did say they felt a bond between themselves

    Witches are evil...lol just kidding.

Actually the bible reads more like the first Harry Potter novel than J.K. Rowlings work..haha.

Honestly to be honest, I find the topic of witchcraft pretty meh. On one hand I find the practice dangerous in some regards and on another I dont really care for it.

Though Im not religious I do consider myself spiritual in nature. I believe all humans have the ability to become "aware" of their spiritual position. Are given prophetic senses etc. This is just my honest and ONLY MY opinion, but I dont find witchcraft any different from any other religion that requires some form of cerimonial whorship or whatever routine to somehow heighten abilities.

Some whiches are creepy though. Their was this one girl (who is trans-man actually) in an LGBTQ I know of and the first thing he/she said was that they were a witch.

I felt like I was on an episode on Tales from the Crypt..the way she/he looked..I was expecting a Mwwahahaha afterward.

Is it wrong I was slightly offended they went for Wicca as opposed to hoodoo, Vodoun, Santeria, Candomble, Obea, Yoruba, Ifa or any of the West African-based religions that have ritual magic in it? I mean, from my research, it seems like Wicca is widely just a catch-all name for several different European-based druidic and religious practices focused around venerating the power of the goddess and femininity in its myriad form. I mean, Erzili (loa of love and beauty) in Vodun loves the gays, and there a few gay and bisexual Ghedes (death and sex/fertility) too.

"Erzili (loa of love and beauty) in Vodun loves the gays, and there a few gay and bisexual Ghedes (death and sex/fertility) too."

These are concepts invented by homosexuals in the New World in an effort to "justify" their own sexual orientations to the populace (and probably to convince themselves as well) via religious validation, akin to Érinlé being the "patron orísá of Gay Men", and Iyémojá and Osún "love the Gays", "Osóòsi and Érinlé were Lovers" smh. If you can justify what you do (good or bad) using religion then it CAN'T be wrong, like Christians defending Slavery via the bible. Lwa/ Orísá/ Ghede/ etc, don't give a flyin f#$k what one's sexual orientation is one way or the other. LOL Sorry, that's a "hot button" topic for me when it comes to my spiritual practice.

As for these two dudes going to Wicca as opposed to some form of ATR, more power to them. Everything is not for everyone. Maybe their "heads" guided them to Wicca, maybe they feel more "comfortable" around white people and subsequently felt more accepted into Wicca. LOL Who knows? We all follow our own paths in this life, most times we'll never really understand the hows and whys of what each other does but then again, it's not really for us to understand, only to observe (as long as its not damaging others in some way). So don't let it offend you (even if only on a vague, infinitesimal level). LOL

I didn't know you were a practitioner. I have questions. Many questions. Once I frame them in a coherent way, I'll let you know.

And I just want us to embrace and learn about the cultures of our ancestors instead of always running to every other belief system out there. I'm working on letting it go, though lol.

I'm not really one to discuss my practice with someone whose not already educated on the subject matter or a {serious} practitioner. Many people have a really skewed vision of what it is to practice vodun/Lukumí/ etc and I honestly just don't have the patience for it. Not to mention the myriad of idiots and fanatics initiated into the religion LOL But, you can email me and see where it goes.

That might have been more specific than MTV wanted. They probably just put out a casting call for people who practice any kind of magic and decided that this guy and girl were the respondents with the most potential to be interesting "characters". I would think that most practitioners of these other religions are introduced to them by their loved ones or community, unlike Apollo who said he became intrigued by Harry Potter.

A witch was describing his ritual practices to me one time, and he was talking about how there's candles involved and timing. It was so detailed, but it reminded me of Catholic mass.Candles, chanting, appealing to supernatural forces. The ones I've met in real life didn't do all of that,so maybe that's just his way. I've always liked trying to find out what other faiths believe to see if any overlap existed, and often I found certain spiritual truths or tendencies to come up (worded differently) in different systems.
