We’ve discussed racism in the white dominated mainstream LGBT community for years on Cypher Avenue. I feel in the last two years this discussion is gaining some ground. Nonetheless; I don’t feel real inclusion of LGBT people of color will be fully represented any time soon in mainstream publications, organizations and conversations due to them not only having a lack of understanding but also not seeing an existing problem.

Roland Martin discusses these issues on the heels of Michael Sam’s interview with Attitude magazine. There Sam brings up racism, homophobia and exclusion as it relates to the gay and Black communities. The discussion panel included Cleo Manago of the Black Men’s Exchange.

    Notable quotes:

Roland Martin: “When GLAAD came after me in 2012 for some stuff I tweeted out that had nothing to do with gay folks, I had white gay folks calling me nigger.”

Cleo Manago: “We have a lot of Black people who are trying to cling onto that movement (LGBT) and trying to be queers and everything else white people have come up with and we have not built a community for ourselves.”

This was a interesting conversation. It seemed a bit generational though - but Roland is right...my FB community is robust filled with all kinds of personalities. I commented on the historic amount of openly gay ambassadors that we currently have representing the US. But I "made the mistake" of pointing out that despite this historic achievement in representation the photo was wierd to me because it was 6 white gay men. Despite that the FACT that the US Department of State has one of the highest number of LGBT employees and even higher numbers in the Foreign Service Six white men make up this picture. No Women, No Persons of Color. After I made that comment, not being critical but celebrating. I had a firestorm of people telling me all kinds of things and I received messages calling me racist and wishing that my career in the Foriegn Service would be cut short because of my comments. I was amazed.

^^ That just sucks. People are just so on edge about race right now. They probably felt it was like a backhanded compliment...'This is really great...but...' type of thing. If you account for women as half the population then white men would proportionally only represent 30% anyway. Hell there are as many lesbians as gay men-where are they?-not to mention the lack of people of color.

And they all do look white as hell so to speak. I don't know what the answers are. I wish I did.

I am beginning to think that the protestors are right...it is going to take being up in people's faces again and again and again. It will get you labeled as a troublemaker and an asshole, but I don't know what else will work.

Being in someone's face with nonstop complaining/protesting and not letting up until change happens usually pays off in the end eventually. It may be a step backwards response, and then a two step forwards after that?

We are still very segregated-especially whites. Many many white people do not have much to do with minority groups. They may work with them, but how many live near them, have their kids going to school with them, eat out at restaurants with them, socialize with them, go to church with them?
In areas that are very white this is how it can be for many white people-they(we- I live and have been working(till lately) for over 7 years in an area that is 95% white) can live in a sort of bubble.
It is hard to see things fairly when you live in such a bubble.

Read the title of the article and immediately hit the click bottom. This topic is so paramount in the LGBT community sadly it isn't discussed as much as it should be.

After reading that Roland quote, there' no need of me reading the rest of the article. That right there says enough. A damn shame.

Yes racism does exist in the gay community. But Roland Martin is certainly an interesting one to bring up this subject. After all, Martin was suspended and later dismissed (his contract was not renewed) from CNN because of controversial tweets he made during the 2012 Superbowl game. Martin had spent the 2012 Superbowl Sunday live-tweeting the game and several commercials that aired during the game. One of the commercials Martin tweeted about was an H&M ad for soccer player David Beckham's line of men's underwear: the ad showed close-ups of the soccer player clad only in a pair of briefs. Martin tweeted "if a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him". The folks at GLAAD got right on it, accusing Martin of inciting violence against gay people. Martin tried to pretend that he wasn't encouraging violence against gay men. But nobody at CNN believed him. Keep in mind that earlier on Superbowl day, Martin had taken to his Facebook fan page and pasted: "who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipthata$$". Martin also agreed with comedian Tracy Morgan when he (Morgan) said he would stab his son if he turned out to be gay. Martin clearly was encouraging violence against gay men and boys. Martin's interest in 'racism in the gay community' is totally self-serving in light of the homophobic remarks he made while he was still at CNN.

Martin was perfect to use his platform to discuss the topic. I wish the white elites at GLAAD spent as much time discussing the racism in their supposed all-inclusive community as they did going after non-issues and non-homophobic remarks like Martin made in 2012. They might as well said "how dare he not like the white man we thirst over on our white only gay websites." Plenty of men (Gay and st8) in the Black community understood those comments were not directed at homosexuals and advocates like Cleo Manago cant attest to that.

This is what happens when people read headlines only and don't know nor care about context and the misinformation gets repeated creating false view points. This is the article Martin wrote on Tracy Morgan.

WTF? Comic Tracy Morgan Has Offensive Material?
Tracy Morgan and the limits of comedy

Even though I don't fully agree with his point of view, I completely understand it. NONE of this means Martin is homophobic nor anti-gay.

Travon Free spoke on this best.
I’ll Tell You Exactly Why Roland Martin Was Wrong About Tracy Morgan

IMO all of this is deflection on the topic which is RACISM IN THE GAY COMMUNITY AND LGBT ORGANIZATIONS. Not what Roland said in 2012.

OK you really did not address the issue, but yes, I agree this is a deflection from the main argument really and is for another thread. I agree with that. So it does not matter if you addressed it or not for this thread. This thread as you pointed out, is not about this guy, but the overall issue. Point made. *love ya Ocky*

The worse thing about being in your sixties, as I am, is to hear all the same arguments being spoken about in the same one dimensional matter. First the gay community never called itself the equality community. Roland is pissed off because his homophobia was showing on CNN and now tries to use the black gay community as a wedge to discredit the gay community in general. All communities are segregated, and the main problem is how money, visibility, and point of view emanates from those in power. I just despise the sanctimoniousness of Roland pretending to care about black gay people. It appears that the trayvon Martin, and other black tragedies brought to the mainstream white audience, again, that racism is a real thing happening in america. But this has happened before, and then its business as usual. I really do not see an honest discussion of race ever happening as long as people, white and black, are really free to express their opinions. There is too much ganging up on one another when one feels unjustly criticized. If somehow we can listen to one another without all these liberal bullshit kumbaya stances that allow us to appear so noble and understanding, then just maybe this issue can move beyond this incessant retelling of these everyday occurrences as if we just discovered the earth is round.

I did address it. The "issue" was a fake issue and used links to support my point of views.

Ok whatever you say. At least I agreed that it was a tangent from the main issue. The rest is up to debate. And yeah I guess you did address it with the links. *love ya Ocky*

Roland Martin's comment had "nothing to do with gay folks"? Hello! He tweeted that if a man found another man in an underwear commercial attractive, he should smack the ish out of him. Not only was his comment hateful towards gay men, it only reinforces the stereotype that Black men deal with conflict through violence. Certainly not something that this website would want to promote.

Because facts matter; Roland's tweet stated:
"If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him! #superbowl”

Roland went on to state his comments were about soccer fans and had nothing to do with sexuality. I believe him and not the easily offended white gay liberals who at times are extremely racist.

@BlackguyExecutive picture from the HRC event is typical. In the nearly 20 years I worked on syringe exchange federal funding issues here is Washington, HRC barely paid lip service to the cause. Although those of us working on the issue never had a clear explanation for their absence (and indeed the near disappearance of HIV/AIDS as an issue on their website), we were in general agreement that the reason for their absence was the unavoidable fact that the population affected by injected drug related HIV transmission (urban and rural minority men) was not their base or even their concern.
