If any one out here is into classical and opera music - Puccini, Ponichelli, Verdi, Eric Satie, Bach, Chopin and the like. Also, does anyone out here play any instrument - musical (let's be clear)?

I played Violin (1st chair 2yrs in a row) in Middle School. Can't play that f@#kin thing to save my life now, tho. LMAO I like quite a few classical tunes, but I wouldn't be able to cross reference the music to the composer, to be totally honest.

I don't play a musical instrument, but I was raised on the composers you noted, except for Satie, whom I had to discover for myself. The "classical canon" remains the foundation of my all-over-the-place musical taste.

Oh I love classical music and Opera music, listen to them a lot. I can play the instrument but not the type mentioned *Three snaps in Z formation*!
I picked interest from listening to lots of Enya growing up and then just branched out from there.
    Of late I have been constantly playing these;

My favorite composers are mostly Russian: Prokofev and Stravinsky. I love Prokofiev's Sarcasms Opus and the ballet, Petrushka. After that, second preference would be Marches of any kind, not just military ones (e.g. Love for Three Oranges); third would be Mozart and Bach.

I played classical/acoustic guitar a little in h.s. and still have an electric bass from my Daryl Jones/Stanley Clarke wannabe period in college. But I'm really a frustrated drummer. My coworkers catch me playing air drums all the time. In my secret life, I would have been Buddy Rich's or Max Roach's understudy.

Impressive. I play the piano. I have always loved the violin and I am about to start violin lessons; rather late but I'm quite excited about that.

I absolutely adore opera music and apart from the voice of the singer, the harmony and symphony of the instruments is always captivating. If find listening to arias help my concentration when I work.

I am a huge fan of Puccini's arias, I think they are the absolute best, especially versions done by the great, the good and frankly incomparable Luciano Pavarotti; I mean look at what he did to Che Gelida Manina and maybe I'm being jejune but Nessun dorma is perhaps as popular as it is because of him. His final rendition of that aria shortly before his death was just spectacular.
I also like to find the translation from libretto for my favorite arias.

I'm guessing tickets to the opera won't be a bad idea for a date for some guys on Cypher Avenue then.

I liked Pavarotti when he was younger, but as he got on, I could not listen to him - a sore point with my father. I have lots of Pavarotti CDs which I inherited from my father. For all you fans who love Pavarotti's take on Nessun dorma, try Bjorling's for a little taste and refinement .
Not that I am trying to start any kind of fan feud, say like Callas-Tebaldi
[IMG]Though it is what makes opera so much fun.

I'm sorry, but Bjorling's version is plain soporific. Incomparable I say! That's overstating it to be honest but Nessun dorma isn't much of a yard stick in my opinion anyway.

Si mi chiamano mimi is yet another one I like from Puccini as well as the ethereal O mio bambino caro.

    How did I miss this?

I'm not so much into classical anymore, but it still has a soft place in my heart. I like Baroque-era pieces, especially when arranged for trumpet/brass ensembles. That era is just so elegant. So pick a composer, any composer- I'll wax poetic.

I'm a brass-instrument enthusiast. I play trumpet and french horn. I dabbled in tuba for about 4 weeks and that was that (smh). I still play trumpet, but haven't kept up as much due to work. I actually started as a cornet player and only about 6 years ago bought a really great-sounding trumpet. I'd run into a fire for it! I don't own a french horn, so haven't played in a long time, but what a beautiful instrument. I sometimes wish I'd gotten some formal training in trumpet performance (ie legit undergrad courses) but the job market it absolutely atrocious and I had lots of science courses to take. Music remains a hobby. I guess I'm still decent at trumpet performance given my lack of training and lack of practice time.

I played this in a trumpet ensemble once. It was fun.

    *sigh* what could have been...

What about a march by a Russian composer? Like this (my favorite march hands down by my namesake composer Rimsky-Korsakov).

And ok, ok, not Russian, by Eastern-bloc- Czech. Whenever I listen to Dvorak's New World, I hear something new.

Whew, all this talk about Eastern-bloc/Russian composers is making me all hot and bothered. I need to go shower now.

Yes, we're all birds of feather up in here. Brothers that listen to classical music, hip hop, up on events, getting/gotten those degrees and businesses. To paraphrase my man Posdnuos, "fuck being thug, we're complicated!" Hot and bothered by Russian/Prussian/Slavic composers! Can't get this kind of action on an app. Take THAT, Grindr! Lol

My intro to classical was as a kid. My favorite grammar school teacher, my art instructor, gave me his old, worn, college vinyl Beatles albums from the 60s as a gift. The U.S. version of the "Help!" soundtrack had orchestral background music from the film, mostly by composer Ken Thorne. One track on the album starts off and ends with a funeral procession-like march and then in the middle, basically lifted a section of Wagner's opera, "Lohengrin." I loved it and it started from there.

I thought I had listed Rimsky-Korsakov, after all he was Prokofiev's mentor, but I was typing on my work break. In addition to the aforementioned, I also liked Tchaikovsky's sixth symphony back in the day, as opposed to his more famous stuff. The marches love is probably because of my inner, frustrated drummer. I can't listen to too much classical music or Jazz at work as I cognitively associate those genres with creation rather than production, i.e. I'm drawing or writing while listening (or just sitting at home contemplating). At work it's usually linear, hard rock, repetitive stuff to help me slog through my cases and workload.
