Justice : première condamnation pour pratique homosexuelle en Côte d’Ivoire

Sassandra - Two young men were sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by the trial court of Sassandra, in south-western Côte d'Ivoire, for homosexual practice, a first in the country.

These two, PL, 31, a security guard in agro-industrial complex in Dakpadou, town of Sassandra Department and LA, 19, were caught in full by the sexual antics of the youngest uncle who, shocked by what show, filed a complaint with the gendarmerie of Sassandra. The lovers are immediately placed under arrest and brought before the courts of Sassandra.

During their appearance on Thursday, PL and LA are not difficult to admit the facts, stating that they are lovers for a long time and they do not see how their act is a crime.

The prosecutor for his part recalled that even if there are homosexuals in Ivory Coast, "the law calls against this kind lewd act", indicating that sex among people of the same sex should be "punished".

Both defendants were sentenced to 18 months in prison each.

In the department of Sassandra, the there are many homosexuals who are well known to people. In 2015, a gay couple living in the village of Lebloko, out of position, found himself at the police station on the complaint of one of the lovers who opposed the "divorce."

The police had then reminded them what they were exposed, while asking them "more modesty and discretion" by returning families to settle amicably their dispute.

This is very disappointing; Ivory Coast was supposed to be a sanctuary for the GB community in West Africa.

Yeah I wish African countries would not do this and focus more on other issues. I remember after the Orlando Club terrorist attack some Ivory Coat men were attack by mobs for merely singing a condolence book for the victims. The U.S. Embassy posted a photo on its Facebook page "accidentally" revealing their identities and outing their sexuality.

This is surprising and sad. I thought that areas that were under French control during colonialism were not as homophobic as the British ones(and the ones that have been infected by the nasty virus of American Xian missionaries of hate). Just like I heard that places in the Caribbean like Martinique and Guadeloupe were, while not exactly friendly to gays, were not outright hostile and were more tolerant. Very disappointing and sad.
