I literally got shivers when I opened the link. I definitely fell for the folklore as a kid.

I think I saw this twice. When it aired on Showtime. It was very hyped and I was just like.... "uhm okay."

It was more creepy because I always got the gay vibe from Tony Todd when I was a kid anyway so I didn't see him as scary.

It was actually one of my favorite horror films when I had binge watched a lot of flicks I've never seen. Not because it was scary to me but because of the racial subtext and just the plot in general.

    Poor Helen! Fuck Trevor!

I feel what you say about the subtext the movie itself was not that scary but it did have some interesting racial undertones especially with the "love"story in the past and the whole slums stuff that was supposed to be in the present.

As I kid it was scary but I've rewatched as an adult and in all honesty it not that scary not even by 90's standards

Oh, no I meant I liked it because of the racial subtext and not because I thought it was scary, it wasn't scary to me. But yeah, I agree.

Not to go off topic, but speaking about racial subtext/undertoned in horror... You know what was horrible IMO? The People Under the Stairs.

This scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Granted, I was 4 years old, but still.

I remember my sister was a teenager and she took me to her friend's house and we all watched it. I cried and was so afraid to use the bathroom for months. I would often crack the door open, bring my dog with me, or speed through and run out. lol

Horror movies involving traditional monsters never scared me. I never believed in monsters. Movies with human murderers didn't scare me neither because I felt like you could always defeat a human. Movies with ghosts, spirits, or general dead people like this were horrifying because I believed in ghosts and felt like you couldn't stop them.

Only The Shining scared me, because I know for a fact that Jack molested Danny... but that's my theory. :leon:
