The term "slay" has important meaning to out director Sean Torrington. "To kill it, to be the best of the best, to always be on top," he told NBC Out. It's also the name of the 36-year-old's new global media network for LGBTQ people of color.

SlayTV is the brainchild of Torrington and his husband, Terry, also a director. He said it gives a platform to black LGBTQ storytellers whose voices mainstream media often ignores. It also allows them to make money so they can "keep on creating the dope content they create," he explained.

Torrington started his career as a Goldman Sachs project manager. After getting laid off in 2010, he took the opportunity to follow his passion for filmmaking and began creating web series on YouTube that centered on LGBTQ people of color. He said it's a community that rarely sees itself reflected in gay or mainstream media. According to a 2016 GLAAD report, cable and streaming platforms predominantly depict LGBTQ characters that are white (72 percent and 71 percent, respectively, in the most recent TV season).

I'll check it out, thanks. Always down for entrepreneurial activity even if the programming may ultimately not be my cup of tea. plus it's good not to be overcritical out the box, every new network needs an opportunity to find a voice and get established.

The description suggest its gonna lean towards the more "artistic" and "flamboyant" black LGBTQ part of the community. But who cares, can't act like they don't exist in the community. Im DEFINITELY here for it and will support my entrepreneurial black brothers.

Hopefully they will open up and develop content that includes everyday not so "fabulous" black gay men, even if they dont think they "SLAY". LOL. :snoop:

These dudes created "No Shade," one of the only web series that I consistently reviewed positively on this site. Sean Torrington was also the very first person I interviewed once we launched Cypher Avenue (HERE). Since then they have skewed way more flamboyant and feminine with their content (hence why we haven't posted their new stuff on the site), but I still support this creative "power couple." The attached NBC News article above is a really good look!

This is more important than it seems at first blush. The economy is going to tank seriously in the coming months. I say that from an empirical analysis standpoint, not politics; retail is cratering from Whole Foods to Foot Locker. Sears will be bankrupt in five years and liquidated (you heard it here first!).

Now, what the hell does all that have to with Slay TV and Cypher Avenue? It's a sign to do as Booker T. Washington said cast ones bucket down where you stand: Entrepreneurship and developing internal resources. Find resources like CA and support them. Create resources so others can support your activity. Black and LGBT communities have tons of opportunities for creating and fomenting internal economics and wealth. As a network or web site rises there are the attendant revenue streams (commercials, products, etc.). Figure out how to get in on the action!

"I have no patience with people who want to tell me what's wrong. I only want to hear from the person who first tells me the solution and then fills me in on the problem. I don't want to hear that your basement is flooded. I want to hear that you've found the number to the cleanup company. Then tell me why you're calling them." --- Earl Graves Sr.

I gave SLAY TV a chance. The "chance" started way before launch when I saw interviews about the project. I then followed them on social media and continued to view their teasers and website.

I felt left out, excluded, and not represented. The same feeling I've had over the last 10-15 years as it pertains to media geared towards homosexual men.

    ***********
Question...As a whole, as it relates to the LGBTQ community, why does the mindset or thought of, "I will support Black LGBTQ __________(fill in the blank)" end at non-effeminate or non-stereotypical representation?

Let's ask them if we can start a masc show on their network. We'll all sit around in John Deere caps, Chicago Cubs jerseys, with an American flag in the back, belch and knock back the brewskis. We'll call the show "God, Guns and Glutes."

Lol. Good to have you back, sir! Hope the fishing was good and the PETA folk didn't protest with "Bush Lied, Trout Fried" signs.

Seriously, I tend to separate the business of these things from the content. So I can effusively praise Tyler Perry as an entrepreneur while simultaneously hating his films. I don't think the answer is for Slay TV to change their programming as much as encouraging an "Ock TV" or "CA YouTube Channel" as alternatives.

"Ock TV" like the sound of it...if you use it, I demand a residual :)
