Have you ever re-watched your favorite childhood cartoon series as an adult and been hugely disappointed? Well, you’re not alone. Nostalgia can often put a nice, fuzzy aura around the things you loved growing up, blinding you to the real truth — that not everything you enjoyed as a kid was actually technically “good.” Sometimes, cartoons can be a victim of their time. If they try to be too topical or “of the moment” they risk looking incredibly dated incredibly fast. Of course, some properties that are really entrenched in a certain era can serve as a funny, retro representation of it for future generations.

Technological innovations can play a part in a cartoon’s lasting appeal, too. Clunky movement, dodgy facial expressions, and badly synced dialog can turn new and old fans off when they’ve grown used to the comparatively slicker animation of modern shows. Changing times mean that children’s media has also become a lot more sophisticated over the last two decades. This is thanks to shows like Batman: The Animated Series, which — with its brooding atmosphere and well-crafted storytelling — raised the bar and is widely considered a timeless classic. But, while some cartoons have stood the test of time, others haven’t fared so well.

I agree except for X-Men Evolution. Thought they did a good job with character development and highlighting multiple characters even though the storylines were different/meant to appeal younger audiences. It's no Teen Titans Go! type of ruining a franchise.

Just about everything Hanna Barbara produced in the 70s and 80s were garbage, looking back. Which is a shame because they had some real winners prior to that which were reruns by the time I was in grammar school (first Scooby Doo series, The Flintstones,Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, etc.).

    Yes

    No

TV animated shows (the bulk of “doesn’t hold up” in the CBR article) in the 80s were such a dumpster fire it turned me off from the field when I graduated. Luckily, Spielberg (Roger Rabbit, Animaniacs), Cartoon Network, DC and Marvel shows, and new animators rescued the genre in the 90s...

I was a big fan of "the Real Ghostbusters" before they made it into the Slimer show.

The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 1980s was fantastic and definitely holds up well. I have it on DVD. It's a shame they abruptly cancelled it without bothering to finish the series.

    Thundar was the shit.

I gives no damns what Y'all mofos say but Jem and the Holograms had really good writing and story telling. Maybe it was because there were legit story arcs? It had a legit series finale that tied up a story line that appeared at least 2 times before in other seasons. Plus I wanted a Synergy, as a growing tech geek. They had world wide cellular coverage before it was a thing.

But fuck Jerica old lying twat ass.

    Also Lion-O was hot.

lol it’s amazing how much our brains switch stuff off when we are kids. Decades later I’m suddenly wondering...why da hell is space ghost’s monkey wearing A MASK. does he have a secret identity to hide?!?

“You know, when Blip shows up, Clark Kent is never around, and vice versa... hmmmm...”

Anyway, the late Alex Toth, the artist responsible for all the actually GOOD Hanna Barbara stuff from space ghost to super friends put out some beauties. Even the Mike Tyson mysteries is based on his drawing style.

I, the shitty cartoon historian, remembers the classics that humanity (intentionally) forgot

I loved this as a shorty, but now I find it so laughable I’m actually satirizing it in the novel I’m writing

    I agree with Captain Planet.

When I was growing up it came on on Syndication, and late as hell and shit on a school night. Like what the fuck. For a kids show. So you had to stay up to watch it, even though you had school the next day.

But I liked the diversity and it was so nice. Not knowing how it's just a 30 minute PSA and it's so damn cheesy.

I can't suffer myself to watch that crap now. lol.
