Part of the discipline is giving up or at least severely restricting foods and beverages that are unhealthy. You gotta give up one thing to get something in return. Very few of us can eat whatever they want and still have a good body. I used to be one of those people up until I turned 36. Now I gotta watch what I eat and drink. If I don't restrict my diet I'll have typical pudgy middle age "dad body." For me eating more of the healthy stuff I like and every once in a while I allow myself a cheat is the key to maintaining. Cheating is strictly a rare treat. For example 4th of July I allowed myself a couple of beers but I made sure the week after to do extra cardio(I hate doing cardio btw). Normally I don't drink beer it's loaded with carbohydrates that just find themselves a comfy place on your stomach to hang out and don't want to leave. Believe it or not you get used to not having certain foods and drinks. It's kinda like when I quit smoking. The first few weeks is the hardest. After that you only get occasional cravings that can be managed.

I hear you and it may come down to me doing this eventually...but I just imagine this being a boring, limited and stressful life. Constantly considering the calorie count of everything that passes your eyeballs...drinking protein shakes at the club...eating only salad with chicken breast when you travel to places with great, diverse cuisines...I'm reading your posts and saying to myself, he probably does look great...but is that the life I want just to have a "nice body?" Like I said in the OP, I don't have a desire for an IG body and competing with the six-packed 20-year-olds there or to be the envy of all "the gays" at the club/bar...I just hope to drop off the worse of my bad habits, lose (most of) the midsection softness and continue to be healthy as I coast through my 40s.

I mean life doesn't have to revolve around chicken boobs and salad. Lol but chicken is a great seasoning delivery system. I have grown to love boneless skinless chicken thighs because they don't dry out and are more flavourful when baked. I trim off additional fat too.

I think salads get a bad rap but only because they are easy. You can buy a salad bag with dressings included to mix it up. People go for salad because they don't have to cook them. Steamed veggies would work as well. I actually used to just drink salad mixes. Spring mix, apple juice, a dash of Lemon juice, and grapes in a Ninja blender make a good green smoothie and you're done. You actually get used to grassiness taste after a while and it's not so bad. You can then take apple juice out and just use water or half apple juice half water if you want to get really strict.

    My thoughts for the day:

@Cyrus-Brooks You’re right, people have to get out of the psychology of “giving something up” when what we’re really engaging in is the cessation of bad things. It’s like the fable of Adam and Eve. God tells them they could have everything on earth except that one tree, so naturally the motherfuckers obsess over the tree lol. People need to get out of the mind of “I can’t have X” and into the mind of “But I can have 2,000 OTHER things than X.” And yeah, once you stop junk, taste buds return to normal.

@Nick Delmacy It’s clear that the diet thing is more psychological for you as you describe dieting like you’re an inmate at a prison cafeteria. I’d consider working with a personal chef/trainer or take some cooking classes to broaden your culinary palate so you can eat the foods that work for you without feeling deprived.

@ControlledXaos I think salads get a bad rap because many cafeterias/restaurants think a salad is just boring assed iceberg lettuce and dressing. I refuse to eat iceberg lettuce salads, they’re tasteless garbage. Gotta have some romaine, arugula, baby spinach, etc. as a base. I think people appreciate salad more if they go to a good salad bar with a wide variety of fixings. You gotta watch some of those places. I see more fucking old ass yuppies and hippies picking out of the salad bar bins at Whole Foods and I wanna knock the shit out of their unhygienic asses.

I had a simple rule when trying to get friends to eat more veggies and salad: whatever in your fridge that ain’t soup or dessert can be a salad. Got some mac and cheese? Through it on a bed of field greens with some onions or carrots. Got some leftover McDonalds french fries? Throw it on arugula with some broccoli. Corn beef hash? Throw it on a plate with of spinach leaves with a sliced apple? Fake it til you make it lol.

And yeah, a ninja is a good idea. I’ll let you have the wheatgrass though lol...

    Mmm chicken boobs

Came across this picture of Ciceley Tyson and Dick Gregory “making no more excuses” back in the 70s. The struggle is real...and older than us lol

Lol even though my mother is from Mississippi I will always honor her for never making her kids endure chitlins once in our lifetimes. She did get on a liver kick when I was pre-teen (I hate organ meats). My dad was from your neck of the country and he loved pickled pigsfeet. Ugh....

I’ve always hated “soul food” and black/family picnics were always a struggle as a kid. I’ve been a Culinary Hotep since before it was fashionable
    :pachah1:

Of course, lots of folk has nasty ass food. I always thought gefilte fish was invited by a Jewish person who said, “hey, I bet we can make something as nasty ass looking as black folk’s pickled pigsfeet but still remain kosher!”

I was the same way. No collard greens, no mac, no stuffing, no yams, no turkey...only cornbread for me at Thanksgiving. I was a ridiculous child...But yea, still not a fan of any of the extreme soul foods (pigs feet, chitlins, etc). Give me a chicken caesar salad and call me Connor Wellington.

Well, Mr. Wellington, you can call me Aloysisus McGillicuddy.

Now turkey was the one thing on your list I’m down for, so my plate was yours plus turkey. Turkey and salmon are my main meats.

Just had ice cream for lunch (see @Nick Delmacy its not all about post-World War II austerity lol), only because the office building had a social for all their tenants. So, I just added the banana and coconut I brought for lunch and there you go. I just cut back at dinner (probably just steamed broccoli and watermelon) and it’s all good...
