Why being handsome is seen as a threat by bosses and bad for a man's career | Daily Mail Online
    • Good-looking men less likely to get roles showcasing individual talents
    • Instead tend to languish in less important positions in workplace teams
    • But researchers in UK and US found women don't face same challenges
    • Actor Rob Lowe said good looks had made it tough to further his career
if you thought it was just women who are judged on their looks at work, think again. It seems men have it far worse. Researchers say handsome men are less likely to get their dream job.

A study found that good-looking gents are seen as a threat by their male bosses and are less likely to be given roles that showcase their individual talents as a result.

    tumblr_oy0pczfzpG1w2x95io1_1280.jpg

Instead, they tend to languish in less important positions in workplace teams because they are still viewed as ‘competent’ even though they are unwanted competition for some.

However, the study found women don’t face the same challenges.

Researchers at University College London’s School of Management and the University of Maryland in the US carried out four experiments in offices.

They found that when men were hiring other men to work with them, their decision was affected by the attractiveness of the candidate and the type of job.

    Finding-Mr-Right.jpg

However, attractive women did not face the same problem because being pretty is not associated with competence among female stereotypes.

Lead researcher, assistant professor Sun Young Lee of Maryland University, said: ‘Managers are affected by stereotypes and make hiring decisions to serve their own self-interests so organisations may not get the most competent candidates.

‘With more companies involving employees in recruitment processes, this important point needs attention.

‘Awareness that hiring is affected by potential work relationships and stereotyping tendencies can help organisations improve their selection processes.’

To get the best workers, irrespective of looks, bigger companies may find it more beneficial to have a neutral, outside recruitment company doing the hiring, she suggested.

“When there are these subtle hints of competition within colleagues, as is often the case, then attractive males are actually at a disadvantage, and they're actually discriminated against,” said organizational behavior researcher Marko Pitesa in an interview with NPR.

The findings only apply in certain roles — there’s a reason unemployment lines aren’t chock full of handsome devils. Pitesa says that the effect is observed in roles and fields where coworkers compete directly with one another. Pitesa uses the example of a car dealership: Cars sold by another salesman mean less cars sold by you, thereby impacting your bottom line. Subconsciously, men may avoid hiring handsome men because they perceive them to be too competent.

Otherwise, good looks can be an asset — in cooperative environments, people want to hire those who can help them the most, which means attractive males have the edge.

    -2.jpg

Pitesa noted that he observed the effect equally in both men and women when evaluating candidates. Interestingly, women suffer from the opposite bias. Attractive women are seen as less competent, so in a way they experience the same pitfalls as attractive men — just for different reasons.

The findings come after actor Rob Lowe complained about how he had found it tough to further his career because of his good looks.

He told the New York Times in April 2014: ‘There’s this unbelievable bias and prejudice against quote-unquote good-looking people , that they can’t be in pain or they can’t have rough lives or be deep or interesting.

‘They can't be any of the things that you long to play as an actor. I'm getting to play those parts now and loving it. When I was a teen idol, I was so goddamn pretty I wouldn't have taken myself seriously.’

It depends but I do know my twin brother's looks play a role into him getting his first job. Not only his looks but his personality too. I guess there is some truth to this but it all depends on what field or type of job it is like this article says.

I know places where people don't get hired if they don't fit a mold.

It depends. Attraction is relative. Real business men are there to get the job done and make money at the end of the day. They don't care how you look (or how cute you think you look).

Idk though ..that Hershey's in the third pic might need to step in my office so we can discuss him getting that raise...

Anyways, when it comes to business I just want to know if you have the skills. I dont care how you look and definitely don't see you as competition...My esteem won't allow it.

This sounds like the Alpha Male logic...idk

For gay male bosses - not so much.

For str8 ones...absolutely agree with this.

Nonetheless, I've found looks to be an advantage.

Def depends on the industry. Looks will never not be an asset, and Rob needs to have several benches because he got WAAAY more work because of his pretty face, than it cost him. Granted, no one was casting him in 'meaty' roles, but if we're betting men, its safe to say that Shakespeare wasn't what initiated his entry into acting.

This just adds to how straight men know good and damned well the difference in attractiveness between other men.

I'll say that Rob Lowe is about as basic in white guy attractiveness you can get. Blonde, blue eyed, fuller lips, thin. He never had the Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise body but as long as he didn't gain weight, he was good. Kevin Bacon isn't a drop dead looker but his resume is long.

I think charisma and personality go a long way. If you can sell yourself well, you'll be memorable. My brother has this down.

"Culture Fit" is a major factor too. If you're at a company or branch that's very "bro" like non bros will have a hard time getting in. People like similar types from what I understand.

Also "handsome" and "fine" are different. Fine is above handsome and I think with that you can get by. Someone will put you on somewhere even if it's not quite what you want to do, you'll earn some cash and not have to be on your back to get it. Show up and drop your application off in a clean suit, smell good, and have fresh hair and you'll get a call back

You can "just" be handsome and still unemployed.

This study is Truth Distilled! I speak from personal experience and can assure everyone here that this study is truth. I can't even begin to list the multitude of opportunities and times I was "passed over" because my boss, who was much less appealing and then me was clearly threatened by my incredibly sexy mug!

Working in sales looks definetly play a big role. I was once told flirt if you have to but get the job done. It sound so bad to say this but its easier to manipulate a persons decisions if they have a nice distraction to look at. #sexsales

Exactly. And let's not forget that it's not even always about manipulation. People are just more apt to at least, listen to someone they find attractive, and potentially buy what they're selling. If it's something relatively inexpensive, many people will buy it just because they thought the seller was attractive.

Honestly, looks are an advantage in most cases. Attraction is definitely relative BUT there are some people that are just high on the attractive scale. I think industry definitely plays a part. If I’m running a bar, I would probably hire the fine ass guy with a nice body or the girl with a pretty face and big boobs. Usually translates to more money. If I’m running a call center, probably won’t care as much.

It really is about the industry. Working in the accounts department i have noticed the people getting hired are more clean shaven, handsome...(like a trust worthy face).

Yeah for sure. Too be honest, I would definitely trust discussing business with someone that looks put together. That doesn’t necessarily translate to them being attractive but it doesn’t hurt. I think that it can apply to a lot of different industries. When I worked in hospitality, I had to interview people and my co-manager was a sucker for cute guy. We’d finish the interview and she’d be like I loved him he was so great. Meanwhile, he was pretty much an idiot.

...yeah I can't relate to this problem. And after seeing "male bosses," I instantly thought about straight white men. Other than them, attractive men would most definitely get the first position at almost any job. Attractiveness may not be the most top pier to noisy people, but it's just a popular opinion that just doesn't get vocalizeenough, in which we all know damn well good looking people get more than ugly people. Let's be real with it.
