Us is a comedic-suspenseful-horror film adding to a body of work that could be the beginning of Jordan Peele’s reign as ‘Master of Horror’. Following up the racially charged hit Get Out, Us feels a bit more expansive and if you’ve seen the trailers you already know this movie takes “doppelgang’ing” to another level. After viewing Us, I feel Jordan Peele has accomplished with his take on “crazy people stalks family and invades house” horror genre by infusing it with his social commentary in a way that makes a film franchises in the same genre The Purge come up short.

Frequent readers of the site know I’m not a huge fan of Black films aimed at Black audiences due to my personal feelings of their tropes, lack of imagination and ingenuity. Many of these films are super simplistic and are intended for the ‘chitterling circuit’. Peele’s creativity help breaks all of those rules while appealing to a wider audience.

No doubt the cast will be bestowed with heaps of praise because most of the actors really did a good job. I think Winston Duke’s (one of the scene stealers in Black Panther) star will continue to rise and I can easily see him transitioning into the A-List Black actor pool after this film. Obviously much of the focus of the film is on Adelaide played by Lupita Nyong’o. Her mystique is slightly matched by her introverted son Jason, played by Evan Alex.

The internet and social media spaces will be filled with think pieces on the film’s social commentary. Us will inspire countless Youtube videos dissecting the film, pointing out things you may have missed, hidden meanings, and the undoubtedly “how Us is secretly real and Peele knows because he is apart of the Illuminati”. The story and Peele’s directing will make Us a film with longevity in a similar fashion how people are still referencing M. Night Shyamalan’s The Six Sense.

I do feel like with most of the trailers we see for upcoming films today, too much is revealed. There was an instance in the film where in a sense; the atmosphere was spoiled by the trailer. Hollywood really needs to get a hold on this and learn how to edit their trailers so there’s not a break in the tension during the film; deluding the mood film makers are attempting to set. Another recent example is the trailer for MA. Also if you were wondering, the slowed down version of LUNIZ I Got 5 On It is excellently used in the final cut of Us.

While I dislike when folk use perceived inoffensive euphemisms when comparing a Black person to a famous successful white person, i.e. “The Black Bill Gates”; if Peele’s first two feature films are an indication of what’s to come from him in the next 20 years, he will absolutely obtain legendary “Hitchcockian” status.

I like being spoiled. You should have spoiled it. I get much better kick at others opinions of something. I actually like to find out every scene before I go watch it. I read it actually. I usually don't look at visual spoilers but sometimes I do.

Did Jordan actually trade his soul to the Dark Gurls of Distraught? (Aka Illuminati?)

Going to see it this weekend with BF. Hitchcock? Whoa there, Nelly, we got a 100 years of cinema to compare and he hasn’t yet produced anything remotely close to “The 39 Steps” or “Rear Window”; he’s still at Tippi Hendren and “The Birds” level. As another CA squad member (with much more filmmaking experience than me) mentioned, “Get Out” was visually interesting but was a horror-comedy that was only mildly funny and not really “scary”.

My only question is what is Jordan Peele’s obsession with close ups of bug-eyed dark skinned people in his films/trailers?

Finally, I don’t understand this whole “spoilers” culture. I knew the meaning of “rosebud” since I was a pre-schooler, decades before I finally saw “Citizen Kane” (arguably the most iconic scene in 20th Century film) and it didn’t “spoil” the movie, just like I figured out the reveal of “The Sixth Sense” at the beginning while watching the movie and still enjoyed it. People who complain about spoilers are still at the “mommy read me a bedtime story” level of cognitive enjoyment...

His bug eyed dark skinned people zoom ups are like those old clips I saw of white people doing blackface. I'm even mrom curious about Ocky's comment and Jordan being a part of the Illuminati.

"Us is a comedic-suspenseful-horror film adding to a body of work that could be the beginning of Jordan Peele’s reign as ‘Master of Horror’."

    ."

    • Hitchcock didn't start his career out as an icon or legend. He had a beginning just like Peele and every other film maker.
    • ZERO is the number of films Hitchcock created that scared me, even as a kid.
    • "I figured out the reveal of “The Sixth Sense” at the beginning while watching the movie and still enjoyed it. People who complain about spoilers are still at the “mommy read me a bedtime story” level of cognitive enjoyment." Who are these people that want to have a movie's plot twist and secrets "given away" before they had a chance to see a film they really wanted to see....especially films that 'bank on' a twist the audience didn't see coming? Viewers want to figure it out (just like you did at the beginning of Six Sense) and not be told. To me this comment is kinda pompous dont you think?

The Birds was terrifying movie. Maybe the idea of stepping outside and being attack by birds is not the same as a bunch of fem bottoms swarming a lone masculine top but it's still scary.

    Psycho is pretty creepy too.

I remember seeing Rear one in school for a project and I laugh when the nun jumps from the building and the music plays.

Saw this yesterday. I will say the cast did a great job and it will be a film dissected for all eternity.

I liked the social commentary but I felt it didn't really engage me. There were so many elements thrown into the film as to what the viewer thinks is going on compared to what actually is. Because of this the pay off is lack luster. Let's just get it out of the way... some parts were really fucking boring. I get it the actors can make scary faces.. Good job casting.. move on plot!

I'm tryna be supportive and don't wanna sound like a hater because certain parts were good but the film could've been better by taking out the gratuitous need for blood ..I get that it's horror but the shit was unnecessary lolol. Also the family was awkward with each other and I had a hard time believing the chemistry if there was any at all ...

One last thing... (in a nice way) Why would you use a corny cheap ass voice done by a great actress to describe half the movie? That shit was painful as I had to really focus on what hell she was saying. It totally took me out of the film.

Imma watch it again and see if my mind changes but I will stick with Get Out as my favorite Peele film for now.

First, on a personal level, no “horror movie” has ever scared me because ... they’re movies. My mind says “it’s just a movie”. Now, Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2, and Obama committing mass murder and destabilization of developing nations...now THAT’S some scary shit, but not films, lol. So criticism of Peele, Hitchcock, Wes Craven, etc. doesn’t begin or end (for me anyway) with “it made me jumped”.

Which leads to the point of spoilers. Nowhere did my comments say “let’s spoil movie plots for other people!!” Notice I didn’t even reveal anything about Citizen Kane or Sixth Sense for those who may still want to see those films. I was criticizing the modern popular ***culture*** of “Spoiler Alerts!” which I believe is more about forcing the public to assist movie studios with the commercial viability of films than ruining individual viewer experiences.

When I was a kid and read film critics ranging from Stanley Kauffman and Pauline Kael, to Armond White and John Simon, no one gave two shits about “spoiler alerts” because they assumed the reader could still enjoy a film in total after reading a review, not just enjoy a film for “surprise gimmicks”. Films have multiple components; cinematography, acting, costuming, pacing, music, lighting, narrative. Plot twists are just one star in a galaxy of cinematic features.

I don’t really have a problem with Peele as much as what I think is people overpraising his films. It’s not an intra-racial crabs in the barrel thing. I just feel like a lot of films and filmmakers are over praised. I feel that way about just about every post-1965 Stanley Kubrick film (except the first HALF of “Full Metal Jacket”), or any 90% of Woody Allen’s films after “Annie Hall”, or half of all Spielberg films. Some filmmakers get kudos just for showing up, that doesn’t mean their films are better than they actually are....

I like spoilers because I am a creative. I actually get more excitement out of seeing an audience reaction than I do seeing movies these days. It may seem weird but I like to see the expressions expressed by real people over a fake entity. That's why I like spoilers and will read them before looking at the film. I get more enjoyment from reading how it affected real people..hahah

I think I have vague images of Full Metal Jacket when I was just a tiny ball of life. I think it was on HBO or something...maybe.

My favorite director is Ridley Scott!!

Saw it and Jordan Peele is soooo damn talented! Regardless of any past horror directors who are also talented, I wouldn't ever compare him to them. Their good, he's good, being good isn't a singular title only one person can possess. But I digress....

What so appealing about Jordan is that his movies so far are very original and even if he gets inspiration from previous works, his eye and approach has been VERY unique. Even more interesting than that though is the fact that he can cast a majority black starring cast and somehow his movies are approached as just a movie with black leads, NOT a black movie. (lets not act like we don't know the difference i.e. Tyler Perry, Will Packer)

Therefore the theater is completely diverse with all people white, asian, black, hispanic, and it seems race isn't on the mind of anyone watching. It seems everyone were just looking at a family (who happens to be black) World Peace in a theater? You actually dont see that too often. Even the family portrayed didn't have to oversell they were black. They just are. So there isn't any need for a negro spiritual to be played, a race discussion, or joke on "we black so we do this". SOOO REFREASHING.

The movie itself I think is a great movie. Not every single moment, but all in all very very good. There is so much meaning in it, that I am sure many people in this dumb ass country can care less about. Movie enthusiast and people who like to think after the movie will love it. The majority of Americans will like the gore and give zero fucks about any deeper meaning. The vast majority of your audience isn't as smart as you Jordan.

He need not to worry tho, he will have the Brinks truck backed into his driveway and parked as I am certain he has received free reign and access to any amount of cash needed by movie studios to make any project he wants in the future.
