Here are the tweets he presented in his “coming out”.

At first glance it kinda seems like it could be a joke or trolling a la Tyler the Creator. What do you guys think?

If he’s gay, then would he be the first black male
“openly gay artist” to have a #1 song. (but maybe it doesn’t count because he didn’t come out before the song hit it’s peak)

    I mean...Good for him...I guess...

Side Note: The whole “coming out” thing has always been weird to me personally. Making the big announcement. As if being gay defined who you were. Who cares.

Just read today that a black male valedictorian came out as bisexual during graduation speech. Sigh. My viewpoint is just do you and tell the people that need to know if they have consequence to you doing you.

I do recognize that gay/bisexual celebs probably do need to get ahead of any gossip and rumors so coming out first may be better. Then again, Queen Latifah just been living her best life and never came Out. I like the way she’s doing it.

Then again (again), I’ve also never been into gossip and who’s dating who. Most people are. So I can see the need to share this information in a big announcement since the masses seem to need to know.

I love when celebrities come out, especially black ones, because it’s empowering. I’m of the camp that representation matters. Until we get to the day where the LGBT life is normalized, coming out will continue to be a big deal. (And I argue it won’t be normalized unless people keep coming out.) Do I think that EVERY queer person need announce their sexuality? Not at all. But I praise the ones that do.

Also, you say, “who cares,” as if there aren’t plenty of bigoted heteros that wouldn’t be quick to flame, shame, and drop him. (They already have.) And on the flip side, don’t forget the countless amount of youth from the younger generation who could possibly be inspired by seeing a gay black male have so much success in a largely anti-gay field. It doesn’t effect everyone, but for those it does, it’s powerful.

It may not interest you personally, nor effect your sphere, but I think it’s worth more than being labeled as mere “gossip” from people who “need to know.”

Nah bro, LOL I agree with pretty much everything you said but I never said that representation doesn't matter...remember that I've spent nearly the last decade of my life making sure this website (and the podcasts, RIP) represented the more masculine leaning side of being black and gay. I meant "who cares" from the perspective of, "you turned down the music at the party to announce to us what kind of sex you like?!"

I never said that young Montero should stay in the closet or not live in his truth...I just think the whole: "Hey everybody, listen up...I'm Gay. I like peen. Carry on now" is like going to a restaurant and saying to the greeter, "Just so you know, I'm bisexual. Any tables available?"

Nah son. Just show up with your boyfriend or male dates like I do. Live your best gay life. Let people figure that shit out through your actions. Lil Nas X could just as easily have not made a big announcement and just been openly gay or bisexual. I think that's more powerful and empowering, IMO. Living in your truth. Actions over words. Being an example to young gays by being young and gay...not just saying the words in a splashy way.

But some people need this, some people need to hear the words. And being real, 100% of the people I've known to make big announcements on social media were also attention seeking queens. That's the gossip and need to know aspect I was referring to...

The men I know personally who (over the early years) made me more comfortable with my sexuality were the regular Joes who happened to be gay that I saw out and about being gay. Not necessarily being flamboyant, just doing regular shit and making it clear through everyday actions.

But again, good for him. Hope everything works out.

    Mr. Nick Delmacy,
I thought about that in regards to when it comes to announcements to reveal one's sexuality that can appear "attention seeking". Although it seems Lil Nas X does not need any attention based on the wave of his widely popular and successful single.

However, there can be good with "announcements", as one person stated it can give others inspiration to live in their truth. Also, no one should not have to make an announcement, as Mr. Delmacy said. Just BE and love who you love whereever and whenever you choose to love. Individuals who are interested in the opposite gender/sex does not announce that they are "coming out" that he/she is attracted to opposite sex.
