5 Reasons Why Gay Men Love To ‘Do’ Sunday Brunch | XEMSAYS.COM

Gay men specifically have become the most popular patrons at any restaurant or café that hosts a good Sunday brunch.
Here are 5 simple reasons why…

Brunch has easily become the most important meal of the gay. Once the gym bunnies have completed their Sunday morning workouts, the church kweens have sung their final, sunrise service hymns, and the house husbands are finished folding clothes, groups of same gender loving men convene for delicately prepared orders of blueberry waffles, cheese omelet’s and bottomless Mimosas. It’s a weekly ritual of sorts; one that gives gay guys everywhere a reasonable excuse to get tipsy and cheat on their tank top diets. Adorned in everything from oxford shirts and blazers, to simple cardigans and snapbacks, Sunday brunch provides guys who like guys with a comfortable setting to detail and discuss everything they didn’t have time to text during their iPhone group chats. It’s the one time each week where gay men can eat carbs without feeling guilty and drink before noon with no apologies.

Easter Sunday, I received three separate invitations to join male friends and associates for brunch at different restaurants. I turned down the requests, as I decided to spend the entire day with my family. However, it dawned on me during the early afternoon that the guys in my life really do enjoy ‘doing’ brunch. I thought about the more recent occasions where I’ve actually seen my buddies face to face. It seems we are always sitting around a circular table, early on a Sunday afternoon. We’re each eating pancakes, while running our mouths about the possibilities of falling in love again and desperately needing a vacation. I also then realized that it isn’t simply my circle of male friends and associates who get together each week to sit down and partake in this signature, midday meal.

    5. IT’S SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT: “I’m doing brunch with such and such” is something pseudo ‘FAB’ to say when casually asked about your day plans. Gay men love to feel that they are somehow a part of the crème-de la-crème. It’s very Nikki Newman & Katherine Chancellor-like to respond to a Sunday morning inquiry by saying, “Oh, nothing really. Ken, David, Jason and I are just about to DO brunch at the Marriott Waterfront”.

Of course, the gays aren’t sitting on sticky, wooden chairs at The Waffle House, or standing in a self-serve line at Old Country Buffet for brunch. When we get together for our weekly face to face, we’re dining on the rooftop terrace of the W Hotel’s, POV Lounge or sitting outside of some well-known, downtown café’. Some groups of friends keep it very cheap and casual. However, location has become as essential to our brunch dates as the items listed on the menu.

    4. THE PICTURES: Groups of gay men tend to be a very ‘show and tell’ type of crowd. We love nothing more than being able to capture photos of ourselves out and about. A Sunday brunch session isn’t adjourned until our entire circle of successful, attractive, charismatic friends, otherwise known as the ‘bros’, are posed for the classic ‘GROUP SHOT’.

Aside from the signature, #MyCrewIsBetterThanYourCrew candid, taking pics of the food, perfectly positioned on fancy, white plates has become a BRUNCH MUST DO as well. Regardless of how dry the blueberry pancakes may look, how hard the eggs feel, or burnt the bacon may taste, for as long as the food photographs well, gay men will pull out their phones to snap a pic and upload the food display to all of their social media timelines.

    3. BRUNCH GIVES SUNDAY A PURPOSE: Sundays tend to be filled with tedious tasks that we’ve put off during the entire week. The day is rather slow in pace. Fridays after work or class, many of us do happy hour with co-workers or random associates. Saturdays are designated for running errands, shopping at the mall and if we’re lucky, going on a hot, late night date. Then, we wake up Sunday morning to hit the gym, go to church or clean. Before facing the bustle of a new week, brunch becomes that special ‘something’ we have to look forward to.

    2. THE TIPSY TALK WITH TRUE FRIENDS: There’s nothing more comfortable or fun than being able to say anything out of your mouth and knowing that your honesty won’t spill from the table. With our busy work and school schedules, there simply isn’t enough time to detail our daily life happenings online or during the iPhone group chats we engage in between meetings. When all of our buddies are buzzed and full of good food, everyone in the group has their guards down. We take advantage of brunch by using the occasion to tell-all.

    1. THE BOTTOMLESS DRINKS: Gay men may spill tea, but they will never waste a good, alcoholic drink. Regardless of age, race or social standing, gay men everywhere generally love their cocktails. An event doesn’t officially begin until the alcohol is served, right? When we pay $30 – $50 per person for an upscale or down home, all-you-can-eat brunch special, it is expected that pitchers upon pitchers of Sangria and Bloody Mary’s will flow throughout the afternoon. And if the Mimosas are watered down with more orange juice than champagne, we will keep requesting glasses until a strong buzzzzz sets in.

Brunch is the most important meal of the gay for every reason aside from the actual food that is served. It’s the one time of the week where men who love other men can sit amongst friends, capture new memories on camera and bask in an end of week moment where diets and horrible, Saturday night dates temporarily don’t matter.

DISCLAIMER: the men who appear in the various above posted photos aren’t to be assumed as members of the LGBT community.

Trust me disclaimer, the men who appear in these photos are DEFINITELY members of the G in LGBT. LMAO

I know 4 of them personally with 2 of them being pretty close friends of mine. I always laugh when I see their brunch pictures because I have seen them on occasion on other sites.

Yep, I pretty much agree with all the reasons stated. Brunch is AWESOME to me. I haven't gone in a while but can't wait to get back to NYC to go. Trust me, you'll see me cheesin right next to my bois in these pics. :pachah1:

Well I think it's good for some people to get out and socialize. It's not too much of a problem for me. I only see as a way for people to get out the house and just catch up on what's going on in their friends' lives and stuff. Some people think that being on our smartphones is a little too much so I feel that this is a good excuse for people to be off their devices and talking to each other face to face and to enjoy each others company.

As for me I've never done "brunch" before. Don't have that many friends to do that with (I could probably give it a try with my three friends). But let's not get it twisted. If I'm going out to eat, I'm going out to eat. We can talk or whatever, but the purpose for me, is to eat. *You may now continue to your regular scheduled programming.* #Food

6.They spent all night at the club and didn't wake up until 1145 so by the time they woke up, kicked out the one night stand, and showered, brunch was the de facto food option.

I was just gonna say the same thing but you hit it first!
So, no time to lose when you're a city boy...brunch is the only meal of the day (late night snacks don't count really)

I like food, I like drinks and I like eating breakfast for lunch....but I don't like Brunch. Especially with a gaggle of gays. I think its the years in Atlanta of seeing groups of men with feminine accents and too-tight sweaters and/or long-sleeved shirts, loudly "ki ki-ing" in public restaurants that have turned me against the concept. It seems classier when women do it. You rarely hear them screaming "Yasss Honey!" from across the room.

LOL I can't with you. I have actually only gone to one brunch where the "yaaassss honey" actually happened. I only knew what brunch was after moving to ATL. While in Houston, I never did brunch or knew what it was but it is definitely a part of "gay culture" so to speak. The main reason why I have enjoyed the brunches I've been to out here are for the conversations and associating with many of the black gay professionals. I enjoy being around other black gay men who are really doing well financially out here. They have their own businesses and/or good positions at their places of work. They always inspire me and motivate me to go for being the best. Since I've been out here, everyone has been really nice for the most part. I can't complain.

And one would think that after all this brunching going on, The Gays® would know how to properly split a bill and tip. :kermit:

@Infinite_loop If you come to the A this fall/winter, we will meet up at Negril Village in Midtown for some Jerk Chicken and Waffles.

@Nick Delmacy While I've certainly seen my share of the Gay Sunday Brunch crowd, most of my brunches are with a married lesbian couple. When we meet, I've usually just finished working out. The same goes for them so even though we are technically having gay brunch, we do it our way. As long as the Gay Sunday Brunch crew lets me do me, I'll leave them alone.

^^ Louder for those in the back of the restaurant who didn't make a reservation.

I'm sooo down for a good brunch! It's not even the gays that do it anymore. Brunch has become a millennial thing for sure. What's better than a full belly of food and liquor early in the day?

maaan it ll be so easy to come over there once i move east. I really want to visit the A, but coming from Seattle it’s very costly both in time and money. I do have some nice alaska airlines miles i saved up though, sooo i might just pull that plug :francis:

Yea, thats hilarious. I have seen some straight people have the same issues many years ago. Especially straight black folk. :ravetho:

I think it depends on your circle and the people you go with. Every time I have went the group have always been pretty upwardly mobile gay men who would laugh at the notion of counting to see who had what.

We would all order whatever we want, drink as much as we want and just place 6 cards in the middle of the table for them to split the bill 6 ways evenly. Than the tip was a combination of cash as well as added gratuity on the bill.

Easy breezy. If issues with payment ever becomes a problem with those you go out with, time to change up that friend circle ASAP.

See I usually peep a menu and have an idea of what I'm going to eat. I don't drink. That's a vice imo. I'm not paying for other people's vices so that's not going to work for me, a flat split. So I'll pay for my food plus a tip. Now the ressayall can split it amid the visa and amexes. Lol despite that, I'm fine with paying for it flat rate for the group, just minus drinks. Lol but if I'm paying more than what I ordered, I'm ordering something to go. Lolol this ain't a socialist brunch lol

It's not about being frugal. I'm just not supporting folks vices so if people paying $30 on cocktails each and $15 for the meal I'm not going in to split the entire bill evenly since if I'm not getting cocktails. That's on them imo. You not drinking on subsidized alcohol off me, but I'll feed you. Also I prefer to use cash because most severs would rather have cash as a tip versus putting it on the card anyway.

Ma nigga did you read this sentence? "I usually don't classify or give title to the meal or time of day I eat."

Your dinner may be at 7pm when mine was at 5pm or at 10pm. Your Breakfast was at 8am while mine could be at 4am or or 2pm.

So FOR ME, its kinda pointless to classify MY meals.

ME saying "I need to eat breakfast lunch or dinner" is usually not in my daily dialog or conversation and absolutely not brunch due to its queer culture connotations.

I usually just say "I'm eating or need to eat".

FIrst and foremost, there is nothing wrong with the gay brunch. In fact, it is one of the things I truly miss about living in the states and belonging to a community of gays. I don't get to experience that much these days. But I think it's much deeper than the superficial bottomless mimosas, getting dressed up, and ki-ki-ing. For a lot of LGBT history, Sunday has always been a day where groups of gays, lesbians and everyone in between decided to gather and have fun, for a long long time this happened in secret. You may have noticed that gay clubs/ establishments host Tea Dances on Sunday that was a code because hosting other kinds of dances were illegal. I think in this era, the Brunch is the new Tea Dance. There is a lot of ownership in the act of publically gathering and having a good gay old time.

But by you saying "Your dinner may be at 7pm when mine was at 5pm or at 10pm. Your Breakfast was at 8am while mine could be at 4am or or 2pm." You're inherently saying that there's still a range over what's considered breakfast, lunch, or dinner, hence a classification.

I never said you specifically name your meals or go out of your way to eat three square meals a day but you also don't sit down at the end of the night and say, oh, this is my breakfast. Your above example agrees with this idea. We all classify our meals to a certain degree, purposefully or not, it's ingrained in society, damn near world-wide lol.

I never stipulated what you had to eat for whatever portion of the day. People do "breakfast for dinner" all the time but guess what? It's still dinner.

Yall don't have to like brunch for it's connotation and I'm not mad at that but don't be difficult just for the sake lmao

I don't think anything is 'wrong' and mos def don't see anyone saying that.

Maybe if I had experience or been introduced to brunch outside of gay culture my attitude may be different. That still doesn't change the fact that I don't classify my meals.

Man stop being difficult. Just because YOU don't call your first meal of the day "breakfast" when the rest of the entire fuckin' planet does, that doesn't make it any less "breakfast."

    smh....

For the last two weeks, I typically eat one meal a day around 5pm. What meal is this? If this is my first and last meal of the day, is it breakfast or dinner?...and according to whom (world-wide)???

Nigga I know what the fuck breakfast is.

    Again...

That time when I picked you up from downtown from your appointment and you stated "lets stop and get something to eat"....you didn't say breakfast, lunch or brunch. You said "lets stop and get something to eat". Meaning the meal was not classified.

It was your breakfast but could've been my lunch....why yall playing???

Oh, just the entire human race, that's all...

    I don't remember what I called it but I know for a fact I didn't say. "Let's go eat a non-classified meal together."

I def love me some brunch on a Saturday or a Sunday lol. It may be the highlight of my weekend lol. But personally breakfast is my favorite meal of the day period. I never really looked at the bunch thing as a gay thing though, I've gone out to brunch with plenty of my straight friends and their friends several times. I always looked at brunch as just a popular thing in American culture. I don't think it's a big deal when you step away from the US.
