Is anyone really surprised? I mean...really? And this is (one reason) why we as black folk are gonna remain in the backa$$wards state of mind/being we're currently in. Im sure there are TONs more negative comments, but I also sure they're mainly the result of a "Herd" mentality. One person says something negative and all others follow, whether they feel that way or not, they just gotta be a part of something "bigger".

BTW...Black people DO (Africans and Jamaicans) kill gays, lesbians, transgenders and pass laws against homosexuality.

 

That is true, but a great deal of the African kill and prison bills are American designed by white evangelical organizations.

 

True BUT African and Jamaican hatred and murder of gays existed before bills were considered or presented.

Bottom line is...dodging or side stepping the discussion on pointing out Black Anti-Homosexual attitudes because "white people do it too" is reckless.

 

I think when it comes to homophobia, it is a lot like crime-white people are most at danger from other whites, blacks are most at danger from other blacks. The things that can really hurt us the most are the personal things that people we are close to can do to us-and for most people, it is going to be someone of the same race, since most people(generally speaking here in a general sense) are around more people of their own race.

Now white supremacy may come into play some when it is basically whites determining local/state laws, etc., or the example given of how white evangelicals radicalized already homophobic blacks in parts of Africa, and these macro things may help 'set the mood' for things, but we are generally hurt the most by our own, the people we are closest to, the people we care about-because they have the emotional power to hurt us.

Look at the original post. How differently would it matter to you if you saw a nasty response by some random white person, some random black person, or an actual member of your family whom you love?

The worst things growing up as a kid knowing I was gay was when I heard my mother or father say very anti-gay things. They would never remember having ever said these things, and would likely deny saying them, but I remember every. single. one.

Does it really matter if it is more or less compared to other groups? Maybe to an extent, but I think comparing blacks to, say, whites may not be as good of a comparison as say comparing blacks now to blacks 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago, etc. -that would seem to be a better measure of progress or regression. JMHO.

*Also remember the nature of social media and how it seems to bring the worst out of the worst...can these comments on this pic on this media be automatically extrapolated to all black men or all black people?
