Anal sex linked to increased risk of incontinence | Reuters

(Reuters Health) - Anal sex may be linked to an increased risk of incontinence, particularly among men who have sex with men, a U.S. study suggests.

Researchers analyzed national health survey data from 6,150 adults and found 37 percent of women and about 5 percent of men reported trying anal intercourse at least once.

When they did, the women were 50 percent more likely than their peers to report having fecal incontinence at least once a month, while the men’s odds of incontinence were almost tripled.

“While this study does not give us data on the frequency of anal sex and the impact on fecal incontinence, we did see a relationship between the practice of anal sex and fecal incontinence, more so among men than women,” said lead author Dr. Alayne Markland of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“We just don’t know if someone who has anal sex one or two times is at the same increased risk for fecal incontinence compared to someone who has anal sex regularly,” Markland added by email.

Even though anal intercourse is common among both heterosexual and homosexual couples, little is known about how this practice might impact bowel function, Markland and colleagues note in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

To assess how these two things might be related, the researchers reviewed responses to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys completed in 2009 and 2010 from adults 20 years and older.

The survey posed different questions to women and men, which might account for at least some of the differences in outcomes by gender in the study.

For women, the survey asked, “Have you ever had anal sex?”

But for men, the survey asked, “Have you ever had any kind of sex with a man, including oral or anal?”

To determine fecal incontinence, researchers reviewed responses to survey questions about leakage of mucus, liquid or stool occurring at least monthly.

Most adults who experience fecal incontinence have only occasional bouts of diarrhea. The condition can be chronic, however, and can be caused by muscle and nerve damage around the rectum, constipation, certain diseases and surgical procedures and by childbirth.

Overall, 8.3 percent of women and 5.6 percent of men in the study had fecal incontinence.

About 10 percent of women who had anal sex also had incontinence, compared with 7.4 percent of women who didn’t report this type of intercourse in the survey.

Almost 12 percent of men who had anal sex had incontinence, compared with about 5 percent of men who didn’t.

No DIRECT correlation between the two. Simply that those involved in the study seemed to have some incidence of experiences with anal sex and dealing with incontience more or less

...and all sorts of other stuff, anecdotally anyways. I think care and restraint is sometimes lost on some people, esp young kids who fly outta the closet with little/no experience.

    5 rules.
1)common sense- if u think it's a bad idea, it probably is. If, while getting your back blown out, you have much more discomfort than usual, if there's waaay too much pressure, stop!
    2) L-U-B-E
    3) take it slow (at first anyways)
    4) if dude comes at you with a baseball bat, just smile and have him to put that bad boy away. You don't want a Dignicare later. I'll just sit over here and let you google that.
5)be open about problems with your regular doctor- the earlier you speak up, the greater the chance of a solution

Right. I think it's also based on what is seen clinically. I had a kid come into the peds ED once complaining of severe rectal pain. Of course when I checked (with one finger!!!!) he was in agony. Yet, when I told him- no more anal sex, he was shocked, and sad, and said, "but I have needs". All I could say was, dude- I had to check you with my index finger- and most d*cks are NOT a single index finger. No sex + stool softeners for a few weeks/months or worsening pain from the fissure- those are the options. I would say he would be at higher risk than most to have incontinence later in life.

I said all that to say this- it's hard to do research on these topics. Most people will either never or under-report their symptoms. There will never be a randomized control study on this topic- only retrospective stuff. It's tough. I think if people were just more open (on pt AND doc side) we could keep more people safe.

This is an interesting topic particularity for gay men. I always wondered how porn stars were able to "take" what they "do" for so long and with so much force and veracity. Do they see a Gastroenterologist (digestive system doctor) on the regular to make sure their bottom area organs are aligned and Ok?

How do those guys manage to take fists and orange cones and that kind of shyt up their asses without just having their guts spill out on the floor? They have to end up with severe problems later on...that is if they live long enough. Right?

I am curious because I have always been the 'can't take a pencil with a gallon of lube' type who sees getting penetrated as a form of torture(I tried at least, I really did...but just no. way. in. hell.) How do you even loosen up that thing? And I would be the last person to have a problem with incontinence. That thing is tighter and more secure than Fort Knox lol.

It's definitely a process. You just don't run it in there. As a bottom, you must know your body and how to prep, especially if you are doing it regularly. I know that male porn stars who bottom are required to fast for a day or two, take enemas, and use that particular dildo to stretch the asshole before they do a bottoming session, in addition to lube. And even with some women and the vagina, there's incontinence, alongside wall fissures, UTI, and other complications, especially if it's a 10+ pee pee.

I probably should not admit this on here, but way way long ago when I was younger I did try a set of dildo/plugs..they were from small to large and you were supposed to start with the small one and work your way up. I always felt like I was 'missing out' on not bottoming because all of the bottoms would rave about how great it was, etc. So I at least wanted to try it...but I could not even master the smallest one of the set. I just hated it and it felt like torture. I guess some of us are just not made to do it. I don't understand how you are supposed to relax anything back there-I don't have any control of that. It just knows on it's own that something going in/in there is wrong and it will NOT relax. lol. Oh well.

And I sure as hell am not going to try again now that I am older. Hell no. :whoa::nope:

I won't even go into the few attempts I actually made when drunk to do this. Failures! :why:

I have no problem admitting I didn't know what Fecal incontinence was and had to look it up.

Fecal incontinence is the inability to control bowel movements, causing stool (feces) to leak unexpectedly from the rectum. Also called bowel incontinence, fecal incontinence ranges from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control.
