Botswana to deport anti-gay US pastor Steven Anderson - BBC News

Botswana is to deport a controversial US pastor a week after he was barred from South Africa because of his critical remarks about homosexuality.

A government statement did not say why Steven Anderson had been declared a "prohibited immigrant".

He was arrested after doing a radio interview in the capital, Gaborone.

Mr Anderson runs the Faithful Word Baptist Church, which says that homosexuality is an abomination punishable by the death penalty.

After his visa for South Africa was rejected last week, the preacher posted on his Facebook page: "Thank God we still have a wide open door in Botswana."

Homosexual acts are illegal in Botswana, as in many African countries.

Mr Anderson was taking part in a morning show hosted by GabzFM station together with a local pastor and an LGBT activist.

The show's presenter Reginald Richardson told the BBC that Mr Anderson expressed disdain for homosexuals during the show and said that they should be "stoned to death".

According to Botswana's private Mmegi newspaper, security agents apprehended him after the show.

The pastor arrived in the country late last week and has given a sermon at a local church that he helped set up, Mr Richardson said.

Mr Anderson's church is based in the US state of Arizona and describes itself as an "old-fashioned, independent, fundamental, King James Bible only, soul-winning Baptist church".

Well good for South Africa to say kick rocks to this guy to begin with, but deporting him is not going to help much until you decriminalize homosexuality. Just sayin' Botswana.

Since he is so in favor of stoning gays, I hope a small meteorite takes him out.

I think more African countries need to start doing more of this. A lot of this anti-gay ideology actually comes from the west with fundamental christian minsters coming to Africa to evangelize. They send money and support to the poor and pay elected officials and local leaders off. Since the west is becoming more liberal they look to many other countries to "win souls" with their fundamental beliefs. Particularly those with high poverty rates. Karl Marx said it best "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

It is very well documented how white Xian missionaries basically got gays demonized in Uganda. These people are not even real Xian's imo and give real Xian's a bad name. There are many decent Xian's who are appalled at this.

Botswana is slowly but surely becoming a beacon for African progress. They should definitely keep doing what they are going.

A great deal of anti-homosexuality sentiment in Africa was imported from Western Evangelicals. Many of them from the United States. It is quite disgusting.

In diplomacy, we call what Botswana did to Steven Anderson, Persona Non Grata, meaning person not appreciated.
