For gay athletes, what comes after coming out?

It was clearly a lil too much too soon for him. Im happy that he came out, but it'd have been a lot more self serving if he hadn't done the whole media blitz.

Now he is trying to distance himself from being seen as gay, before baller, as far as his professional identity. Esp since he's all ready low on the draft totem pole.

    Michael Sam, anyone?

Def sucks to see how conflicted he obviously is right now.

That article was a really good read.

Derrick wants to go to the nba and needed a bigger/better basketball program. The only program that wanted him was Senton Hall. Derrick transferred to Senton Hall a perceived better school for basketball than Umass. The only thing is he didn't know it was a catholic university ( I didn't know either). A catholic priest who was a chaplain at the school was reprimanded by the archdiocese for taking a picture with him. Despite the gay organizations who want him to be "un-apologetically out gay"; He's kind of forced to not be so outwardly gay if he wants to make it to the nba.
Now Micheal Sam; the pressure was too much for him and caused his poor performance.
It seems that there would have to be more of a young top tier athlete similar to russell westbrook, john wall, damian lillard or jeff teague type who lead their teams and would already get more media attention because of their elite athleticism. It would be good to see Derrick in the nba maybe was a backup shooting guard. GOD he's such a cutie lol

It's an admirable risk. Coming out is such a horrific term, of which we talked about in another post, but I get it. Nobody wants to live in the bondage of not being there true self. And yes I think they are both cuties :)

Yea, the school is Catholic, but I rly dont think that's the big issue. I rly think, based on his draft prospect status, sum1 put 'The Michael Sam Story' in his face n made him realize it might be in his best interest to take a step back from being a gay media sensation, and bust his azz at tryna be a last minute draft prospect.

I cant say I blame him for wanting to put his professional aspirations b4 gay media, I just wish sum1 had been there to keep the young man balanced enough to where his sexuality wouldnt be bigger than his career trajectory, seeing as how he is a college student, after all.

It's understandable why he is now shunning the spotlight. This is just my thoughts but it seems at first he just wanted to not have to worry about having to keep the secret about being gay. Trying to be in the closet and cover your tracks all the time is very stressful and mentally exhausting. But once he came out the gay media wanted him to be role model and a gaylebrity he probably just didn't want that. He's still a college guy who wants to play basketball and perhaps go pro. All the spotlight on his sexual orientation was probably creating a lot of negative feedback. Sports is still a hetero male dominated area and the attention on him being gay was probably having a negative impact on and taking the focus off of athletics.
Put it like this. I'm a truck driver. Yes I am gay, but I don't want be known as gay truck driver. I don't hide who I am I just don't want that be the focus. Any one in any profession should be able to relate.

The only thing I'll say, is that he prob did genuinely enjoy the spotlight n scene stuff, but I think all of that was too much too soon.

To be honest, as much as I adore this lil dude, he was doing the most after he came out. Them white gays had him out there playing the mascot. I'd bet a paycheck that it was a black dude who eventually convinced him to dip back out of the glitter spotlight

Idk if Id go as far as cosigning that, but I think the issue is that all of the athletes who come out arent at the top of their respective games, thus, not making the expected impact. If a mofo comes along and is as good as LeBron or Kobe, no1 is gonna question his status as a blk, gay, pro athlete.

Better tread lightly, some people might start calling you a "racist." But you do have a point. Lots of black people both gay and straight were not feeling that at all.

I think people also forget that Gordon and Sam are very young men who are impressionable. I will agree in part with some of the sentiments here about how gay white culture used these men to advance their own interests. This is all the more reason why there needs to be black gay role models that don't necessarily serve the elite white male gay agenda.

For me, I really don't think there needs to be a "coming out" for any gay or bisexual athlete anymore. As an athlete who is gay or bisexual, you don't need to hide your sexuality and your sex life; however, if the public is to know about either, it needs to come generically and naturally without the press conference or red carpet. The media and the people who are hired to work in it doesn't care about you. Media cares about "the story" and the WOW factor that can come out of it, because it's their job. As soon as Sams made it public to "come out", CNN didn't come to his home because of him being an athlete. They wanted to see what would happen on camera to equate the narrative. Sams kissing his boyfriend should have been his business off camera. However, even though CNN didn't narrate for that to happen, they were there to "expect" something to happen and they were glad that it happened, if nothing else did. Nobody cared about him being drafted. They only cared about him and his boyfriend kissing.

I would advise any gay or bisexual athlete, especially male (i.e. double standard), who moves forward in the National area of sports as a career to do what anyone should do doing their job. As soon as you walk through the door Day 1, make it so clear that you are here to do your job, so much that nobody can get in your business. Even though having your career be public, I still think there are ways to be able to avoid what Sams went through. I would follow the Mathew Knowles Media Training course on how to handle media:

I think that you make a very valid point. All of the celebrity types who have come out nonchalantly and moved on continue to have careers. It is the moment when you allow something as personal as coming out become the headline story is when it becomes a circus. However, some of my friends in Public Relations would say the opposite and that you should capitalize on opportunities because you may never get a window of opportunity again but I call BS.

I agree with you. Some times the media and other advocate groups focus on getting a narrative which can be opposite to the wants of the athlete who is just trying to focus on competing at an elite level. There is also a double standard to gay male athletes. There are gay wnba players have been out, married, divorced, got into domestic disputes with their spouse and married fellow players. Could you imagine if hypothetically Tristan Thompson and Odell Beckham came out and said they were marrying each other. The media would have a field day worrying about who would be on the guest list and calling it the wedding of the century. If I was a pro athlete I def would not want the media all in my personal business just pay me my money and let me play ball.

Well I would just how that they would just focus on their job and just keep playing. Stay on the field or on the court and do what you're supposed to do. If anything, they should at least know what they might get into and not let the noise from other people affect their talent and skills. That should be the main key

Some of yall may not agree with me, but I think homosexual athletes should wait until they achieved some success before coming out, especially in physical masculine sports like bball and football. I think Mike Sams would've faired better if he didn't come out until after he played for a couple of years and showed the fans his skills and value to the team. Just cuz some team signs u doesn't mean u wont be cut and able to make roster.

Lets look at Odell Beckham for example. He is suspected by many fans due to the videos of him dancing with other men, being in hot tubs with other men, looking at the other player's azz and how he responded, the selfies with other men, etc. But he hasn't officially came out and I see why. Now if he did come out...his career wouldn't suffer much because he ALREADY shown his excellent skills as a wide receiver, his route running, play making ability, and how he can burn thru a secondary. Plus he waiting for that big contract.

Coming out is more important for some BUT u gotta show ur value first. U coming out would be a media circus in a masculine sport where the mainstream heterosexual population think gay/effeminate men cant play physical sports and don't like to watch them. Some teams don't want to deal with the media circus and how other heterosexual players would respond to an openly homosexual player, the locker room scene, etc. At least if u show ur value to ur team....they may risk it just cuz u shown the fans that u that dayum good. Its like u gotta be extra talented and successful if u gay or a media circus for another issue like Tim Tebow when he played with Denver Broncos. Some teams don't want the main focus (winning games and getting to playoffs and superbowl and establishing winning culture) to not be the priority.
