It’s a travesty how European colonialism in conjunction with Christian missionaries, have destroyed traditional beliefs and religions of indigenous native peoples around the world. One major blow pertains to gender and sexuality. Presenting written archeological and verbal (by way of spoken word or oral traditions passed down from elders) factual evidence can cause a level of cognitive dissonance in the minds of today’s religious believers or followers. For many in today’s society, it’s as if there is a retardation that prevents wonder or natural curiosity surrounding ancestral beliefs or customs outside of the Christian faith. Not only is it possible but irrefutable that 400 years ago, people not of European decent held and practiced beliefs and religions far removed from Christianity. Global Colonialism changed all of this.

I state all this because all my life I’ve heard same gender sexuality is a White man’s disease and practice. Even at a young age this seemed a fallacy for me. Nonetheless, over time, I believe millions of same gender sexual men of color have been indoctrinated with this belief. This has caused confusion and dysfunction in many. Same gender sexuality has always existed not only in the animal kingdom and natural world but also in the human species. As part of our platform, Cypher Avenue has presented this information before but admittedly not with enough frequency. As then, some of the information was / is of disbelief but I encourage individual research to draw your own conclusions. My personal goal has always been to say to same gender sexual individuals…“Please walk tall because there is nothing unnatural about you.” Attempt to look outside of today’s prisms and study world and ancient histories. Everything shouldn't be wrapped up in a White Jesus, the US Flag and Queen Elizabeth.

    Homosexuality in Sub-Saharan Africa: Pre-Independence
    By: Stephen O. Murray

The myth of exclusive heterosexuality in indigenous black/sub-Saharan Africa was widely diffused by the 94th chapter of Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1781). Referring to homosexual behavior, Gibbon wrote, “I believe and hope that the negroes in their own country were exempt from this moral pestilence.” Gibbon’s fond hope was based on neither travel to Africa nor on inquiry of any kind.

A century later, Sir Richard Burton, who unlike Gibbon did know something of Africa, reinforced the myth of African sexual exceptionalism by drawing the boundaries of his “sotadic Zone,” where homosexuality was supposedly widely practiced and accepted, in such a way as to exclude sub-Saharan Africa.

Especially where Western influences (notably Christian and Marxist) have been pervasive, there is now a belief that homosexuality is a decadent, bourgeois Western innovation forced upon colonial Africa by white men, or, alternately, by Islamic slave-traders. The belief of many Africans that homosexuality is exogenous to the history of their people is a belief with real social consequences–in particular, the stigmatization of those of their people who engage in homosexual behavior or who are grappling with glbtq identities. These beliefs are not, however, based on serious inquiry, historical or otherwise.

There are no analyses of the social structures of African societies written by indigenous people prior to alien contact. What is inscribed of “traditional” African cultures was written by some of the Northerners who disrupted African cultures, first travelers, then missionaries, colonial officials, and anthropologists. In many cases the observers inscribing “traditional” African culture did not understand that their presence as observers was itself a product of history and domination.

Nevertheless, the observing Europeans are the only source of data on homosexuality in Africa until the most recent few decades. Most of what can be learned about traditional African societies was inscribed in the last decade of the nineteenth century or later, when the continent had been colonized by European states. To keep down the costs of colonial government, European (and especially English) colonial regimes used “indirect rule,” endeavoring to maintain customary laws, though attempting to ban some customary practices, particularly sexual ones.

The travel, colonial, and anthropological literature include reports of native conceptions and native practices of male homosexuality in many societies across every region of the continent. Documentation of female homosexuality is less abundant, but exists for many cultures. The contact and colonial era reports are critically reviewed in Murray and Roscoe’s Boy-Wives and Female Husbands. Here, only a few examples of each of the main social organizations of homosexuality will be mentioned.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    “Boy Wives”: Age-differentiated Homosexuality
In the central African Zande culture, before European conquest, it was regarded “as very sensible for a man to sleep with boys when women are not available or are taboo.” English anthropologist E. E. Evans-Pritchard was told that in addition to times when women were not available for sex, some Azande men had sex with boys “just because they like them.”

The adult males paid the families of boy wives, just as they paid for female brides. The two slept together at night, “the husband satisfying his desires between the boy’s thighs. When the boy grew up he joined the company and took a boy-wife in his turn. It was the duty of the husband to give his boy-wife a spear and a shield when he became a warrior. He then took a new boy-wife.”

One commander, Ganga, told Evans-Pritchard that there were some men who, although they had female wives, still married boys. “When a war broke out, they took their boys with them. . . . If another man had relations with his boy, the husband could sue the interloper in court for adultery.”

The South African Thonga provide another particularly well-documented instance of a boy-wife role. A number of southern and western African societies also had female husbands, though whether these husbands had sexual relations with their wives is unclear in what has been written. (It seems that anthropologists studying the phenomenon did not ask that question.)

    Gender-differentiated Homosexual Relations
Gender-crossing homosexuality has been discussed as common in the (Nigerian) Hausa bori cult (and in Afro-Brazilian offshoots of west African spirit-possession religion).

Among the Maale of southern Ethiopia, some males crossed over to feminine roles. Called ashtime, these (biological) males dressed as women, performed female tasks, cared for their own houses, and apparently had sexual relations with men, according to Donald Donham. One gave Donham a clear statement of the “third gender” conception: “The Divinity created me wobo, crooked. If I had been a man, I could have taken a wife and begotten children. If I had been a woman, I could have married and borne children. But I am wobo; I can do neither.”

Among Swahili-speakers on the Kenya coast, particularly in the port of Mombasa, mashoga are transgendered prostitutes who have all the liberties of men and are also welcome in many contexts in which men are prohibited. The paid partner usually takes the receptive role during intercourse, but it is likely that his inferiority derives from the fact that he is paid to provide what is asked for, rather than from his undertaking a particular sexual role. The one who pays is called the basha (derived from “pasha,” a high-ranking official and the local term for the king in packs of playing cards).

Among the Fon, the predominant people in Dahomey (now Benin), Melville Herskovits in the 1930s reported that, after the age at which boys and girls may play together, “the sex drive finds satisfaction in close friendship between boys in the same group . . . . A boy may take the other ‘as a woman,’ this being called gaglgo, homosexuality. Sometimes an affair of this sort persists during the entire life of the pair” (though he earlier referred to homosexual relations as a “phase” through which adolescents pass).

    Egalitarian Homosexual Relations
Most of the reports of homosexual relations not involving differences in age or gender status involved young, unmarried men’s sexual relationships with each other. Kurt Falk wrote about an especially intimate bond of association, soregus, among the southeastern African Naman that included sex both between men and between women (with mutual masturbation the most common form of sex, but also males taking turns at anal penetrations and females using dildoes on each other).

An “exceptionally reliable” Nykakyusa (a people living around what is now the Tanzania/Zambia border) reported to Monica Wilson in the early 1930s that male friends, who live in villages of age-mates when not out herding cattle, generally sleep together. The Nykakyusa accepted that male friends who danced together would have sexual relations. “Even if people see them in flagrante delicto, they say it is adolescence (lukulilo), all children are like that: they say that sleeping together and dancing is also adolescence,” according to Wilson’s elder. He reported that interfemoral intercourse is “what boys mostly do” and also reported anal and oral sex, (“some, during intercourse, work[ing] in the mouth of their friend, and hav[ing] an orgasm”).

    Conclusion
With reports from hundreds of sub-Saharan African locales of male-male sexual relations and from about fifty of female-female sexual relations, it is clear that same-sex sexual relations existed in traditional African societies, though varying in forms and in the degree of public acceptance. Much of this same-sex activity was situational or premarital, though there were long-term relationships, too. The special Christian animus toward homosexuality was carried to Africa by Europeans and stimulated denials that “the sin not named among Christians” existed among “unspoiled” Africans.

Note: Within ancient societal customs or traditions; it was common for young girls and young boys to marry their peers or be promised to older Men based on tribal stability, financial and survival reasons. In many countries these practices still exist. As women fight for their (and children’s) rights and freedoms, these practices are being abolished or altered but unfortunately in many countries these traditions prevail.

Interesting read. About those figurines. Are those ancient or are they recent replicas? Are they gold? where are they from? I can't find any info on them and they are kinda fascinating- I am not sure I have seen anything quite like them. Any info about them? They are interesting but not exactly the kind of think I would have sitting on a desk or an end table lol. I lied..maybe in the bedroom somewhere.

*too bad this stuff isn't taught and instead we have our evil evangelicals going over there and stirring shit up.

    -best line of all.

About those figurines. Dude I researched the internets HARD for additional information when I was putting this together. Here is what I found...

*I believe they are replicas or inspired by actual sculptures.
*They appear to be replicas of style from the Ashanti tribes in Ghana.
*The style or technique is called mrammou.
*These are bronze or some type of composite overlay.

Man...can't believe somebody else was curious about the sculptures origins or history just like I was.

Thanks for the article. Interesting material. However I am concerned about two things: firstly, the title is misleading, the focus is on pre-colonial/colonial examples of same sex sexual relations. That doesn't say much about same sex sexual activity in contemporary African societies which are vast and divergent by region and cultures. Also, same sex sexual activity does not necessarily prove a sexual orientation. Just because a specific group in a particular region recognised pederasty doesn't mean recognition extended to same sex relationships. Ancient Greeks practiced pederasty but that does not mean they or modern Greeks are open to male on male sex. Secondly, as a South African, I noticed some factual errors. Can someone please tell me what is a "Thonga" tribe???? I've checked on Wikipedia and the local census here and I am lost as to who is being referred to. I am worried that this article came from a supposed academic point of view. What methodologies were used to derive these findings? I think the problem also relates to the first issue above, that this supposedly looks at same gender sexual accounts in a period where it was easy for a white observer to re-write the story of a people simply because they had access to a writing system. Whilst the people practicing those acts could not write down what exactly was happening. Having said all that, thanks for sharing this, more people need to read this, especially sgl guys in parts of Africa where they have no say. I am curious about the experiences of sgl men in places in Africa where they can freely hookup, date, marry and live like other citizens. Are they documenting their experiences?

I just immediately was curious about them because I have never seen anything quite like them, especially given they are from Africa. There has to be more info on them. I said gold, but figured they would not be or they would be more renown. I wonder if there is some art institute that specializes in this type of art?

*OK they are definitely reproductions of Ashanti in brass and they are only about 2 inches tall and are on sale online for only $10.00 a piece. (the three way one is $15.00). They are authentically imported from Africa. I uses what you provided and that was what I came up with-a company that goes to Africa and imports authentic ancient art and reproductions. Some of that stuff is worth many thousands of dollars.

I am not sure they should be buying and exporting and selling authentic antiquities though.

Hell I am really nosy I sent them an email to see if they can provide more info about these or similar artwork from the area they got these. If they respond I am going to ask them about taking real authentic ancient artwork from the area(and not just reproductions. Some of that stuff appears to be old and dug up or discovered. That should go to a museum or stay in Africa imo.

Thanks for this. I taught in a West African university for four years in the mid 70s in the Sahel region. The local traditional ruler, though married, was well known to be bisexual - it was openly discussed. Though homosexuals and bisexuals had to be careful, there was a quite vibrant community.
When the first civilian government in Nigeria, which at a national level was dominated by the northern, predominantly Muslim, region, was overthrown in a coup in 1964, one of the accusations against the northern leaders made by the southern military, was that they practiced homosexuality. It was not unusual for this accusation to be repeated. Of course, today, northern Nigeria, with its imposition in many states of Sharia law, is stridently anti-homosexual, a marked departure from fifty yeas ago.

The funny thing about these artifacts (not necessarily these, but most ancient "artifacts") I think, is most times I wonder if we "society" really put too much thought into them LOL Like, in this case, what if the bronze worker was just a horny muhf#$ka and made a little piece of porn to J/O to. Like I was watchin this YouTube documentary once that spoke about some clay tablets found all around this one ancient Egyptian work site that were literally "porn magazines" of the time. They got into this whole f#$kin philosophy of the mind set of sexuality of the times, and what the sexual culture of the time was and the reason that the tablets were made, and what the men were like, why they would've had the tablets etc etc. Ni@@ga...it was a construction site full of a bunch of horny a$$ dudes who hadn't seen/felt pu$$y in GOD knows when. Dudes are dudes and have been dudes since we figured out we could nut w/out a chick present One muhf#$ka happened to be able to draw good, drew up some porn, and sold it to muhf#$kaz so they could beat they sh!t. smh. LOL Everything is not always something. LMAO

LOL porn is porn. The thing about these figurines is that they are reproductions, and they are part of a larger collection of sexual art ...that the gay stuff is just thrown in like it is not a big deal. Just another form of sexual expression. And even clay porn tablet 'magazines' say stuff about what the sexual culture was like. Probably more accurate about what their sexual life was like than stuff they would unearth from some ancient buried museum. lol.

Although can you imagine what people from the future would think of us if they found our porn on the internet? They would think we were sick and depraved! lol

"And even clay porn tablet 'magazines' say stuff about what the sexual culture was like."

I guess my thing is, what is the big "take away"? Like, what could there possibly be sexually, thats so different from what we do today. Maybe they were a lot more "tame" sexually (we do some pretty depraved shit to ourselves and to one another) but other than that, what are we really trying to discern from a bunch of ancient porn? The only major difference I could really see if that pederasty and inter-familial sex are frowned on nowadays. Other than that, I'm sure the same styles of fuckin' we do today (gay and straight) were goin on back then, and will probably keep going for years to come LOL.

But if they dig up some clay tablet porn that has people engaging in anal sex, homosexuality, dick sucking, etc. then the powers that be in that area( like parts of Africa) can't keep up the 'It is all a white man's perversion' shit about stuff if the stuff is clearly pre-colonial in nature and obviously African. It acknowledges what people try to suppress. The same for other areas like in the Middle East (although they try and blame it on some other 'invading cultures influence' and other crap like that.

That is the whole point of the whole post- you can't deny the past and evidence from the past is the best way to show that, although a lot of oral history of traditions and stuff was also discussed as evidence mostly. The figurines are clearly African to me (the faces kind of remind me of the African-like masks of two of the nudes in Picasso's 'The Young Ladies of Avignon' ) and they stood out to me-the photography of the figurines immediately had me intrigued. That is why the any ancient clay porn tablets(lol) are important-they are a real record that cannot be denied. Plus it is interesting how almost all the clay tablet exaggerate the penis-those things are always HUGE! lol

Touché. This makes a lot of sense, then. I've always had an issue with either not seeing the "Big Picture" or, seeing the entire "Picture" without taking time to appreciate the details of it. LOL Irony at it's greatest being that I'm an artist LOL.

@alton @ColumbusGuy nothing is new under the sun. I've been looking through my archive and searching for new homosexual history stuff to post on the site. My first couple of paragraphs on this mostly (which I will most likely use as an intro for each homo-historical post IDK) explains why.

Alton...if we saw the same Egyptian Sex themed documentary....was it mostly about a papyrus that was hidden from the public in a museum? If so...that papyrus was filled with some wild ass sex acts that are mos def on par compared to today.

CGuy "they are part of a larger collection of sexual art ...that the gay stuff is just thrown in like it is not a big deal" EXACTLY!

It wasn't and it shouldn't be a big deal just as it was back then. I expressed my POV to others about how I feel homo/bisexuality has regressed (despite of marriage equality....whatev's) in the last 200 yrs.

PS....I like that you guys express yourselves freely on the site and provide detailed commentary and rebuttals.

There is probably a reason the three figurine replicas shown are only two inches tall. They are small and can be easily hidden away and not attract attention. Can you imagine what the artist may have to deal with in Africa if the figurines wee two feet tall and heavy as hell and hard to hide or disguise?

^^to Ocky's post..what would be really interesting is to find some Caribbean stuff. I know there is Inca homosexual art hidden away in museums in Peru. I wonder if there is any heritage or actual evidence of homosexuality as natural and part of society in other parts of Central and South America, as well as Africa and the Middle East?

And yes there is all kinds of repression of sexual history in all kinds of societies. I wonder how many Americans know that up to one third of all births in Colonial America were out of wedlock?

    LOL WRONG!

Dude I promise you; MANY people think Satan put fossils in the ground as an attempt to sway Christians away from Creative Design and evolution. The same thought process applies here.

Blacks feel if a White archaeologist discovered the artifacts...its a trap and a set up to push the White Gay Agenda. White religious types (and Black) automatically associate homosexuality with pederasty due to ancient Greece and Rome.

Logic and facts have no place and those who speak them are the mouth pieces of Satan.

No, but I think I saw that one as well. And yes, it shouldn't be a big deal, but thanks to "organized" religion, it is. The irony of which, the most powerful of the Three Evils, Catholicism {which is a continuation of the Roman Empire in my opinion} outwardly condemns homosexuality, but continues the practice of pederasty between the mentors (priests) and the youth (choirs boys, etc), despite their {now} denial of it.

This is why I gave up on my brother. The fossil record is the devil's attempt to fool us. And yes, the Earth is six thousand years old, even though there are living things like tree colonies that are 13,000 years old and a box huckleberry plant in Pennsylvania of all places that is at least 8,000 years old. And yes, Jesus rode a dinosaur.

Also this is why we need more non-white scientists, archeologists etc. ...although of course they would be denounced as coons and brainwashed tools of the white devil smh. nevermind.

Whoa whoa...please tell me you're not gonna sit here and act like Jesus wasn't riding dinosaurs? Damn. I thought we could have intelligent conversation but...

MUCH more important than if they rode them...is what did they TASTE like! How did they cook them? You know they ate those big bastards! Did a T-Rex taste like beef or chicken? Were they barbecued? Why did the scientists destroy and hide all of the old clay tablet dinosaur recipes?

Plus getting back to the post subject..you know some guy got fucked in the ass by a velociraptor and it is on some pottery or tablet somewhere hidden away...probably in some secret site in Nevada the damn government!

Something like this could be a series examining pre-colonial homosexual/homoerotic art and culture in different non-white areas, especially black areas given this website and all. I wonder about places like the Andaman Islands, Aboriginal Australia, other parts of South Asia along with the Caribbean and more remote parts of Africa like Madagascar-such a strange place because of it's isolation-I know nothing of the original culture there.

I wonder if there would be any kind of record whatsoever of escaped slaves who went south and lived and mixed with native Americans like the Seminole(before they all got wiped out). I also wonder if they were too busy trying to survive to produce any record of any kind.

I mean outside of Europe pretty much every original culture is non white so there must be all kinds of evidence...it is just a matter of how much was destroyed, and how much that survived is hidden away.

Heck, people from today that see some of my porn collection think I'm sick and depraved and gives @SB3 a little bit more reason to believe his theory about me.

    That I'm a killer.
I'd like to say it's just based on my picture but the funny evidence keeps piling up.

As in some type of sadistic twisted sexual deviant serial killer? Well you are in NYC and all.... speaking of ...he does not exactly 'look' harmless himself. He looks really good but with his 'mean mugging' he looks like I would cross the street and say a prayer under my breath if we crossed paths. lol.

Of course if either one of you is, you know....like a killer or something I want you both to know I don't necessarily have a problem with that and all...not judging....*backs out of thread*

Whoah! Whoah! I said killer! Where'd you get twisted sexual deviant serial killer from? I'm more the crime of passion killer, like you step on my dogs paw so I stab you a little, repeatedly like 20-200x or until my hand cramps up. Or you jaywalk in front of me and to teach you a lesson I run you over a few times but sick and twisted deviant serial killer, never!

I dont don't think he looks dangerous at all, quite the opposite which is helpful in being a successful killer.
I do personally think he really watches forensic files to copycat and keep up.

LOL I only said what I said because you were talking about porn collection. Neither of you look like a killer..but neither did Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer... just saying.

I have only seen the one pic of SB3 and he looked 'intense' although I am sure as he said he is a nice guy.

And how did this get from homosexual African storytelling and art to killing people?

Not sure if if you came across this documentary in your research but it might be worth checking out. Saw the the Lobi ritual on YouTube and was floored (mostly about the fact that is was posted on YouTube). Apparently not all pre colonial traditions were eradicated. Looks like there are still dwindling pockets of tribes in Africa and South America that practice old rituals (mostly the ones still cut off from modern society).
