Is it ok to just be Black Americans?

You and me both. Hopefully, we can have some folks "well versed" on the subject shed some light bro.

 

White people like the light skinned folks. I like Zoe. I have no problem with her but the thing is, they slapping her in everything for calls for a black woman. She isn't the only female of color who can act. But I guess she since she hit two check boxes on the "Diversity Scale" they like to cast her for double dip purposes.

 

At least we got some improvement.

 

Now you know they don't wanna see Michael K Williams as an everyday American man.As he said,he's dark skinned so he's a thug.White people don't wanna see him in a movie with Sandra Bullock unless he's trying to kill her.And you're def not about to see Viola Davis or Kimberly Elise (who I LOVE) in a role wher they aren't somebody's struggling welfare mamma.

 

I think @DreG and @SB3 hit the nail on the head. The white people who make and consume most American movies find certain kinds of black people to acceptable namely light skin blacks. The lighter and closer to white the better. The "exotic" black namely European, Caribbean, and African. Regular garden variety "American Negros"(as my grandmother would say) are not palatable to many white Americans. You see this in the political sphere in addition to the entertainment industry.

 

This goes back to the #OscarsSoWhite trending topic. I think that it is imperative that more black men and women pursue the performing arts particularly in drama and theatre. We make plenty of inroads in music but the other Arts are severely lacking. Part of the problem is in many communities of color, the first thing that is cut is Arts programs. We need to find ways to support artistic youth and afford them similar opportunities and other groups. We could also start supporting Black Art and Entertainment with our dollars. Say what you will about Tyler Perry, he launched the careers of many black actors and actresses.

Can the same be said for the regular, degular, shemegular dude....I'm tired of meeting someone who says, "yes I'm Black, but my great-great grandmother twice removed on my adopted sister side was Dutch & French so I'm a little mixed."
