Jhene's on a Trip

Pain. Not physical- more of existential suffering and grief. That’s what Jhene’s album is about. Except, it’s not just an album, she has a short movie and poetry. I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, and now I need y’all to go check it out.



There’s apparently more than meets the eye with Jhene. For example, mid-movie she intones, “pretending to be perfect is perfectly fine for all the individuals who are perfectly fine…and grew up with money, and never fell on hard times and had trust funds and had too much fun with their full time dads.” Yeah, a bit banal until she adds later, “fuck me for crying over spilled milk that I never planned on drinking”. The movie is startlingly vulnerable.

So in this era of errrrrrybody thinking they wanna make visual albums, I’ll say this- it only works when there’s some emotion behind it. Jhene was devastated after her brother died. Beyonce was devastated after JayZ decided to screw around. And Frank Ocean made a fucking staircase with way-too-tall steps set to some random-ass ambient music.

This psychedelic colab with Mali Music might just take the cake- a dewy voice over a rumbling, trippy beat. Also, he cute AF lol.
