I understand him feeling the need to defend himself. The other couple were the aggressors and instigators. It can be said that the beat down was excessive, considering the size of the other men involved. But one of them did have a knife. But the fact that El-Amin himself is gay was glossed over in a lot of the press surrounding the case. With the omission of this fact, it reads like a hate crime perpetrated by the incredible Black hulk. I'm incensed by that.

They called him the 'N' word? There is proof of this or is this him/his friends statements?
Does his 15 prior arrests including assault factor into his sentence? How many convictions?
He said he was attacked first, but where was this proven? Did it come up in his trial?

hmmm.... not knowing how the arrests turned out, the sentence sounds very steep for someone not being seriously injured, especially if they started it and they used a slur that could have a 'rage' factor involved. People get into bar fights and people get killed and serve less than nine years for involuntary manslaughter when someone dies.
