What moment, place, object, or time period of your life are you guys nostalgic for? More importantly, do you think your nostalgia is holding you back and making you cynical about the present, or providing a boost of happiness and keeping you in touch with your least cynical self?
The time that comes to mind most easily in my late teens and early 20s. Back then I still looked at myself as being capable of anything,whereas now I've assessed my personality more and think more realistically about myself.That feeling of vast potential was nice though.
Way back in my 20s, before I started dating dudes, before the "gay lifestyle," all I had were straight friends, life wasn't all about peen and buttholes and abs and porn stars in gay clubs...Life was "regular." I was determined, focused on my career goals, hungry...I rarely drank alcohol and never smoked weed...no health issues...my friends were tight like you see in TV shows and movies, we did damn near everything together. It was a good time, full of good memories.
I have to say I am very nostalgic of my late 10s, the "gap year" between graduating high school and moving to the US. I had a little customer service job at a neighborhood hardware store and was selected to go to Uni with a full-scholarship. I lived with my parents, rent-free spent most of my earnings on traveling to Uganda, Kenya, or just generally exploring all the great outdoors in East Africa or drinking and partying with my high school homies. My immediate and distant family were still there and life was simple and wonderful. Now it is just a shell of what it used to be *cue dramatic classic music*. I live 10 time zones away from my mother and my lil sis , my other siblings are all scattered across the planet, hell I am lucky if I can get a phone call in with any of them once a week with all our busy lives and incompatible times. I yearn for those days. This also felt like writing in my journal. I never thought of how nostalgic I was....
I wouldn't say it's necessarily holding me back, but it definitely makes look back and visualize how simple life was when someone else was responsible for my bills. My only job was just to live and make sure I don't get in trouble. that was nice...
To share mine, I miss being a kid. I know a lot of people don't because of the lack of freedom. But, as a kid, it's not like I cared at the time. Personal responsibilities were at an all time low. Sex and dating weren't on my mind and pressuring me. I was MUCH more creative. I wasn't aware of the tragedies of the world. Everything was bright, and I was carefree.
Yea, Id def have to go w my early 20s. Fresh out of college, and fresh in NY. It was such a great time. A time when living in NY was still a big deal to me lol. My friends and I had no worries, a couple nickels to rub together, and the memories to prove it. Then all of a sudden, I looked up, and EVERYONE was getting engaged, married, knocked up (not necessarily in that order..ijs). Lol. Good times.
Probably amusement parks, video arcades, water parks. Bunch of fun stuff I did when I was young. Going camping. Elementary school.
