On a website owned by a prominent white nationalist, you can buy Confederate battle flags, “Don’t Tread On Me” Gadsden patches, and other items often associated with the white power movement. You can also buy a big, rainbow LGBT pride flag.

A neo-Nazi hocking LGBT pride swag on his website Patriot-Flags.com doesn’t seem to make sense—the white nationalist movement generally aligns rather closely with extreme and homophobic Christianity. But observers believe it’s part of a broader strategy in the white nationalist movement to court those in the homosexual community.

“Following the shooting deaths of 49 people at an LGBT club in Orlando, Fla., some white nationalists saw an opportunity to prey upon fear within the LGBT community to foment Islamophobia,” the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist groups like the Ku Klux Klan and National Socialist Movement, wrote in a post last week. A street artist who previously created anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim posters quickly seized on Orlando’s mass shooting by creating rainbow-colored Gadsden flags with the hashtag #ShootBack and plastered them all over West Hollywood, home to a large LGBT community in Los Angeles. The artist said he wanted to send a message to the gay community that they can defend themselves. A similar flag appears on Patriot-Flags.com.

The neo-Nazi selling LGBT merchandise is Kyle Rogers, a leader of the Council of Conservative Citizens who ran the organization’s website until last year. The CCC made headlines in 2015 when some of its racist ideology was referenced in the manifesto of Dylann Roof, who allegedly murdered nine people at a predominantly black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

“That’s quite the paradox for a neo-Nazi white nationalist who generally sells uniforms to racist organizations like the anti-LGBT League of the South,” the SPLC wrote of Rogers in its post. “Earlier this summer, the LOS—which buys its uniforms from Rogers—turned out in protest of Montgomery, Alabama’s annual Pride festival, holding anti-LGBT signs and shouting ‘God Hates Fags!'”

Rogers did not immediately respond to Vocativ’s request for an interview.

Rogers and the CCC are not the only traditionally anti-gay institutions trying to bring the LGBT community into its fold, according to the SPLC post. One of the founders of the Alt Right movement and president of the white nationalist National Policy Institute Richard Spencer banned anti-LGBT activists from his organization’s annual conference last year, which included an openly gay Alt Right author as a keynote speaker. The SPLC also cites an article written earlier this year by white nationalist activist Greg Johnson. In his articled, titled “Gay Panic on the Alt Right,” Johnson argues that white nationalist movement should embrace the LGBT community if it wants to thrive.

“I can only control my little corner of the movement,” he wrote, “but my view is that White Nationalism should be ‘straight but not narrow,’ meaning that we should uphold and defend heterosexuality as the norm but also recognize that not everyone fits that norm. But as long as homosexuals uphold healthy norms and have something positive to contribute, they can and do make our movement stronger.”

Sick and twisted. Keep up the fight-the fact that they are reaching out to white gays and lesbians really reveals just how desperate they are, trying to use anything they can(Islamophobia)to hold on. I think this recent Trumpist 'rise of the extremist right' is probably these people realizing they are on the losing end of history and is a one step back before the two steps forward-and I think that deep down this is what they know.

We will see more of this.

What most mainstream press missed in Trump's convention speech when he promised to protect his friends in the (stuttering) LGBT community was the full statement. Trump did not say he would protect his gay friends from Governor Pat McCrory and his ilk. He said he would protect gays from radical Islam. So, I guess it's still open season on us from Christians. But just as George Bush became a feminist when he invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, sending demure Laura to meet with liberated women, Republicans now become raging gay lib types - anywhere but in their own back yard.

As @Rico pointed out the Brown Shirts spent a lot of time dressed up in tight breeches and leather boots and though they paid the price, it's difficult to conceive of Hitler's success without them. @Rico recommends the Wiki article, but if your taste runs to the visual, rent Luchino Visconti's The Damned for a lush if too-short depiction of a Nazi orgy. The point is, militaristic ultra-nationalist groups have often dabbled in the homoerotic.

In France, the leadership of the far-right National Front includes quite a few gay men.

White extremist have no shame whatsoever and they will extort any community that 1. Has influence. 2. Has resources. White gays present the perfect opportunity to harness both and let's not forget whiteness trumps everything when it comes down to it for them.

I can't help but be amused by these skinheads (gay, straight, or anything in between) who adopt white supremacist ideologies ignorance. They adamantly believe that Caucasians are culturally, morally, etc. superior, but appropriate a West Indian/Caribbean subculture.

    The irony...

If you live long enough, irony just becomes an everyday part of life. Yeah, it's ironic that what is today called skinhead culture comes from other than what it it seems. Unfortunately, the mutation became the accepted norm, even though original skinheads and punks made an effort to fight them off when they first popped up in the 70s such as the "Rock Against Racism" movement and songs like the Dead Kennedy's "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" (the irony that the drummer of arguably America's greatest punk rock group was black was lost on the racist assholes who started showing up at their concerts)
