I have been hunting the internet for movies that one we as "masculine " gay community can one relate to that for one doesn't fall into the cliche route. If I can think of one I would say My Brother the Devil

Because I have been through a similar circumstance, less violence of course, I can relate to the feelings of the characters involved. That aside this is a good watch, that doesn't fall into the same trappings of the cliche

    Strange Fruit (2004)

New York attorney William Boyals has escaped the Louisiana bayou of his childhood, but he must return to investigate the death of a childhood friend who, like Boyals himself, was both black and gay.

I wrote a review and posted clips from this film on the site 4 years ago. Still one of the ONLY non-stereotypical black gay films ever made that wasn't about dating and relationships.

I actually really enjoyed this. It was a very honest depiction of how two people can connect even in a short amount of time. It doesn't have that typical formula gay films use. I believe this is on Netflix

    Brother to Brother (2004)

A gay art student befriends an older homeless guy who happens to be a major figure from the Harlem Renaissance. Flashbacks show what life was like during the guy's younger days. The student finds that he still faces some of the same challenges today. It's a decent look at past and present struggles and how things change and stay the same. And though there is a relationship, it is not relationship-focused, despite the impression given by the Youtube thumbnail. I think this is Anthony Mackie's first leading role, though it was overshadowed by his portrayal as lesbian-impregnating Jack in Spike Lee's She Hate Me, also released in 2004. (When I attended a SHM screening, the audience hollered at the ending. Possibly the greatest audience reaction I've ever experienced.)

From Beginning to End was...interesting. Freaked me out for a bit to be honest. The thought of two brothers being in love is just...(sigh) whatever floats your boat.

Another random movie I came across on Netflix was Cuatro Lunas (Four Moons). It's anthology film that tells the story of a first crush, reunited friends, a tested relationship and an older mans obsession.

While Undertow pretty much tells a very familiar plot it adds another element to give it an original feel. Also, on Netflix. You can probably tell I watch foreign films lol

As their relationship develops, both reveal secrets from their past but these revelations might be real, imagined or outright lies. Who is being truthful, who is real, and who truly loves the other? All is revealed in this romantic, passionate drama/thriller that offers a shocking, strangely satisfying conclusion.

This one had a twist at the end I wasn't expecting.

Loved this movie as well, but I'm a lover of all things (afro) Brazilian lol. The incest storyline was a little hard to get with at first, but moving nonetheless. I missed the last 30mins of it though.

Yeah. I'm liking all the non-American films. There's definitely a lot more quality gay-themed international films. I really like looking at LGBT life through the lens of another country. It's so interesting seeing the different cultural influences.

It really spoke to me since I am Nigerian and one of the main characters is Nigerian. The other one is part-Jamaican which is not too far from Nigerian culture as far as how homophobic the culture is.

Yes I absolutely LOVED Rag Tag. I've seen it 3 or 4 times already. That is a film that I would like to have a discussion about. Rag and Tag.. and his Uncle and his friend... the homophobia, the acceptance, living undercover, being out and recognition that a relationship is just a relationship.. there was so much. @African King, I would love to hear more about your thoughts on the as it pertains to your experience and Nigerian culture.

Yeah I seen that movie maybe 3 or 4 times in the last year or so.

I mean I could relate from when they went to Nigeria and they spoke about how men can be affectionate. The music, being in the village, etc. I don't even know where to start. I was born in America but I am strongly connected to my culture aside from the native language.

The year before last, that was a student teacher at the school I taught who was Nigerian. (and was he hot). Sometimes when we talked he would hold my hand. I knew what it was about, but man, did it give me goose bumps. Still had to be careful because, of course, we are in the US at an "urban" high school. lol.

I have run across a number affectionate man from different cultures around the world through the years. It sucked when I was attracted to them, because I couldn't tell if they were too...lol

lol yeah that is the thing about men from outside the US. In many West African countries like Nigeria that are strongly homophobic, the lines between friendly and gay are blurred a lot. Guys are very affectionate and will complement each others looks and all that. Men were there that complimented me when I was in Nigeria this past December in 2014, I would wish that they were gay like me lol. I would have just wanted to just... well... gotta keep it PG on these threads lmbo!

In Rag Tag, the man who acted as their guide in Nigeria- I kept trying to figure his character out. I got the feeling that he was either jealous or just didn't like Rag because he light/Jamaican. What was that all about?

I'm not sure what that was all about. Could be due to the fact that he is not a Nigerian. I don't think it had to do with jealousy though
