Roots: The Remake

This is on the History Channel...there has to be at least one scene during the boat ride over where slaves and the captain see a UFO fly over the ocean.

 

I was gonna say something vaguely similar @Ockydub . I feel a remake should have been done by someone who is going to tell the true story of African Slave Trade, Life under Slavery, not some "Made for White Audience's ratings" TV series

 

I'm absolutely gonna watch this.

 

I'll preface my remarks by saying I generally don't like remakes and reboots. When I heard they were remaking "Roots" I couldn't help but roll my eyes. This should've been left alone. There is no need to retread this well worn territory yet again. Talk about beating a dead horse, Jesus H. Christ.

 

Outside of your comments about the remake/reboot (I get it); here is the thing.

We have:
Roots
Queen
Amistad
12 Years a Slave
D'Jango
Nat Turner

That's six mainstream films or tv shows since 1977. How is this beating a dead horse (kinda feel you but still)? There are over 400 yrs of stories and history waiting to be told. Would Jews make this type of comment about their heritage and the Holocaust?

 

I don't have a problem with discussing or movies about slavery per se, but there is so much more to black history than just slavery. Unfortunately slavery gets the most emphasis then after that the civil rights era. Most of all I just think that retelling the story of Roots is not necessarily.

 

I left out Selma and Glory.
Anywho...on that point I agree. I would like a film about the Harlem Renaissance and Robert Smalls.

 

I was rolling my eyes left to right and right to left. I wasn't even going to look at this thread. However, the actors who signed on to do this gives me hope. I also, think that this could update the story for younger people who have not seen the original. Most of them have not seen the original nor do they care.

 

Definitely going to watch. I understand it seems that this is the only story we tell but I feel we owe it to our ancestors to try and tell as many of their stories as we can. We can do this and tell other stories as well but we then should be challenging the movie studios to green light more diverse stories not to stop telling the ones we already have.

The Diary of Ann Frank

All of these films deal with in some ways Nazi Germany and The Holocaust. A war that lasted roughly 7 years.
All tell diverse stories, comedic, violent, romanticized, horror, dramatic.
I generally am not a big fan of remakes but I'll personally take a Roots remake over the alternatives of (insert stereotypical comedian) or Madea.
I strongly agree that we need more stories overall to entertain and educate us but we have entertainers and athletes who unfortunately influence our youth saying and putting fourth the mindset that now that we have Obama, Oprah, Rimes & Beyonce all at the same
Then the struggle is over, move on.
