SAGINAW, MI -- Social media was abuzz this week after a story was published about a 17-year-old female being charged with raping a 19-year-old man in Saginaw Township.

The story went viral and was picked up by the Drudge Report on Jan 18. The story became the topic of conversation around town as well. Most people wondering what were the full details of the case and how a woman could rape a man, something that's not reported on much.

Similar questions and comments were raised on social media. Some made jokes regarding the allegations, while others tried defending the victim by saying that rape is rape regardless of whether male or female.

According Legal Advocate Tracy Kaul, of the Sexual Assault Center of Child and Family Services, 2806 Davenport, it is something her agency does not see often, but usually because of shame and guilt associated with it.

Kaul said that media and society portray males a certain way, and that makes them more unlikely to report a sexual assault committed against them.

"That you are strong enough to stand up for yourself and that you can't get raped," she said. "Even more surprising, that he'd come forward is because the perpetrator was younger and a female."

Lestina Marie Smith, 17, was arraigned on Jan. 17, on two felony counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Each charge carries a maximum punishment of life in prison.

If convicted of the crimes, Lestina Marie Smith faces life in prison.

The charges stem from a Jan. 11 incident in Saginaw Township where Smith allegedly held the 19-year-old Saginaw man at knife point and engaged in oral and vaginal sex with him.

Smith was denied bond and is being held in the Saginaw County Jail.

Her next appearance in court is a preliminary examination on Feb. 3 to determine probable cause.

"It takes a lot of courage for anyone to come forward," Kaul said. "But applaud anyone who would come forward."

All services offered by the Sexual Assault Center are free to sexual assault victims and those affected, including family members of any age, Kaul said.

The agency pays for the examination at the hospital for sexual assaults committed within 120 hours as well as the evidence collection. They offer counseling, therapy and legal advocacy.

Those who believe they may have been a victim of sexual assault can call the 24-hour crises hotline at 989-790-9118.
