I sporadically watch award shows because for the most part they’re just not entertaining for me. The 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards hosted by DJ Khaled didn’t change my opinion. With a handful of cool moments, for the most part I was like…

The show opened with one of my favorite DJ Khaled songs “I’m So Hood” and it made me completely miss T-Pain.

The show was taped in Miami-Dade County …but no shout outs to Moonlight (no homo), the writer or director who brought a BEST PICTURE Oscar to the city? I know that was wishful thinking on my part though.

Katt Williams looked like a lost member of the group Zhane

Props to Cardi B for the Hustler of the Year award.

    First Cypher
Salute to DJ Premier for using a beat that so much reminded me of that old Jodeci Freakin You remix with Raekwon & Ghostface Killah …but naw wasn’t really feelin any of the freestyles during the first cypher.

Sorry but Migos performance reminded me of a high school talent show with freshman girls from the flag team dancing around in the background. I know Migos are close to the top of the rap game right now but looking at their live performance was boring as fuck.

LeBron James advertising for Sprite was the best commercial during the award show and it came out in March of this year. What does it say that I’m being entertained by commercials during an award show?

    Second Cypher
So much better than the first. Cyhi The Prynce (yo dude is nice) would have easily been the stand out if it wasn’t for Fat Joe dissing Nicki Minaj.

I’m in the drop right now.
Two bad bitches that came to get down.
One called Nicki and she sippin on Remy.
…oh Lawd…where they at right now?
Used to be present now they the past right now.

Black Twitter collectively lost their grits and cheese minds. FYI…If you have a chance, check out Joey Crack’s interview on CNN concerning Puerto Rico. Mad respect for him and how he handled himself.

Best Collabo, Duo or Group to me should have easily went to Migos and Lil Uzi Vert for “Bad and Boujee” but instead went to DJ Khaled feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller for “Wild Thoughts”.

Just when you thought rap performances couldn’t get any more boring or disjointed, here comes Playboi Carti wearing his big sister’s sweater. If Migos was high school, this performance was middle school. I felt like dude was performing for the grown-ups at the cook out.

    Third Cypher
JID was mos def the stand out.

Best New Hip Hop Artist – Cardi B. Props to her again. It’s hard to not be happy for her but you have to admit Nicki Minaj help set the stage.

    Blac Chyna’s ass though…

Gucci Mane’s performance felt like I was watching a music video being filmed live. I wanted to be in the audience at the club.

Major props to DJ Khaled for repping fatherhood during the show and showing the world that men of color are caring nurturing and loving fathers.

NFL player Devonta Freeman was the sexiest male presenter of the night.

Yeah I’d bag him over Dave East….who looks like he’s one blunt away from being on bath salts. I said it, come fight me.

Album of the year of course was Kendrick Lamar – duh

The Loud Records Steve Rifkind shout out. Loud Records gave us, Wu-Tang Clan, Big Punisher, Mobb Deep, Krayzie Bone, The Beatnuts, M.O.P., Tha Alkaholiks, Pete Rock, Lil’ Flip, Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat, Xzibit, Twista, Dead Prez,

Yo Gotti so much reminds me of Too Short. His “Rake It Up” performance had me hype.

    Fourth Cypher
    Mysonne’s positive rhymes shocked me. Dude was actually saying something. Then he came with the crowd pleasing lyrics;

    Gangsta but woke.
Aint nothing they can do with me.
I swear next year Oprah will try to cougar me.

That being said…still can’t sleep on 6LACK during this cypher.

The tribute to Luke was priceless and well over due. I hate that he doesn’t get more respect in the game as a true pioneer. DJ Khaled gave a heartfelt introduction and Uncle Luke’s acceptance speech was a lesson in the draw backs of Black Identify Politics. The tribute performance was by far the most fun and best performance of the show. Trick Daddy, Trina…OMG

Something I noticed during the performance…the male dancers were actually or stage with the women shackin, twerking, booty poppin and doing splits; something typically unheard of in hip hop today because it would be considered ‘gay’. I hadn’t seen this level of Black men freely dancing on television since BBD was on Showtime at the Apollo or when MC Hammer was on Arsenio Hall.

The Giving Back segments of the awards did a great job showing how artists and activists were helping victims of the recent hurricane disasters and also helping the homeless in Florida. The production and editing of these short segments should be commended as well.

Quick Side Note – do you recall seeing K-Dot’s television performances from the last two years? Think about when he was on Ellen or the Colbert Report. Why aren’t rap artist more creative in their performances?

The most news worthy and viral portion of the show came from Detroit’s own Eminem and his take down of the great pumpkin in chief Donald Trump. Lyrically for me I thought it was just okay; however I did really enjoy the drama of the performance. It felt like I was watching more of a spoken word performance and less of a free style session. Either way I can’t see the performance changing the minds or ideology of any hump Trump supporters.

I enjoyed Cardi B! Saw a clip online. I am just happy to see her win! She broke Lauryn Hill's record for a female MC at #1 w/ no feature. "Bodak Yellow" has now been #1 on the Hot 100 for THREE WEEKS!!!!

Thanks for this review! Well done! But of course DJ Khaled would win over Migos. It is an amazing song and dope flip on an old school record! :)
