    Just a simple question: for St. Louis, Baltimore and Oakland do they count police killing folks as a violent crime, just for statistical purposes of course?

    hey man. what's the source of this data? i'd like take a deeper dive into their findings.

    quantitative data can be so problematic b/c the data is rarely contextualized. for example, they won't show important complementary data such as comparison data on school funding btwn these areas and their surrounding suburbs, or their respective poverty and unemployment rates. this kind of stuff just helps to affirm racial stereotypes that blk ppl are violent.

    I think they do, but in a different report/statistical representation. They would have to know it in case a higher up wanted to know the "real" number.

    different sources use different metrics which makes it confusing. some look at murders. some look at all violent crime. some consider the total number of murders/violent crimes, others consider rate.

    a lot of this stuff is for shock value. when i was growing up, i remember my hometown (camden, nj) and gary, indiana used to flip flop as the "murder capital", but we always felt suburban papers misrepresented actual numbers or left out important info to dramatize the story. ppl tend to think of data as objective: "numbers dont lie". now that i'm a researcher in training, it's become very clear that you can shape numbers to help paint whatever picture you wanna tell.
