Basic question. Im starting therapy this week to address my anger. I'm a really nice guy in general, but I have to figure out why I keep allowing ppl to put me into a zone where I want to spazz out. I can go from a customer making me want to jump across the bar to beat the brakes off of them to crying when they play the 'God is Tryna Tell You Something' during 'Color Purple'. I'm either a hot head or an emo water head. Smh.

Any other bro's currently, been in, or thinking about therapy?

I am currently not in therapy but there's probably a few things I could stand to talk to someone with removed interest.

Highly recommend it. Just keep in mind their job is to help you fix your own shit, not fix it and hand it back to you. And if you feel uncomfortable with one, don't be afraid to switch, it's a professional arrangement not a marital commitment. You need to be comfortable that when you spill the beans they won't be spilling your tea...

Yes... physical therapy for my back and I missed my second appointment last Thursday.

Seeing you drunk angry (?) is actually hilarious but I don't know how you are when you're on 100. But it's good that you're seeking therapy.

I used to go to the school counselor in middle school for weird bouts of depression or teenage angst? who knows, even I don't.

I haven't gone to a therapist recently (did in undergrad because of an assumed alcoholism problem), but it's definitely on my list of to-do things with some parting problems.

Also (sorry to double post) I think in general our community likes to not value the process of going in for therapy (hell doctors in general), so I commend you for being honest about it and also valuing your mental health (which most people in general do not focus much on).

Yes, I am looking for a therapist. I definitely am in need of one. Need to work out the cause of my severe bouts of depression and my aversion to social interaction/ rejection.

Here's a decent article on the subject from a bro about your age:
Things To Consider When Starting Therapy | VSB

    I would just add

    1) Not being racist, but I really believe you should try a BLACK therapist that's woke. Not saying a non-black therapist can't help, but the reality is that any of our textbook mental health issues are inexorably tied and woven with white supremacy and microagression from the dominant culture added to the mix. Even all the black mental patients you see on the street in cities like NYC or Chicago are because of majority-determined policies that failed these people instead of treating them. He/she might be able to also offer informal networks and groups to join outside of therapy sessions that buttress what you cover in the sessions.

    2) Frankly, black therapists could use the business, since black folk would rather take their fucked up shit to fucked up ministers, fucked up churches and mosques rather than to behavioral science professionals with scientific training and certification.

That is good advise for black men. Also group therapy might be good with other gay black men going through similar problems. And that pic sends chills through my spine since I watched the San Francisco news(which came on at one am here)when that happened and followed the whole damn thing! *and it was grape FlavorAid actually.

I have been in therapy but I had bad luck..especially with the monster I went to after my partner died(fuck that therapist). I should go back, but I am afraid to touch the tangled knot of neuroses that I have, because it might be like pulling a string in a tangle...one pull and the whole thing(my personality)comes apart. That tangled knot of neuroses might be the only thing holding my mind together! LOL!

About a decade ago, while in undergrad and possibly shortly after dropping out but before eventually going back, I spoke to some counselors (actually counseling graduate students in training who were supervised by licensed ones as part of a lower-cost university counseling service). Prior to that, I took antidepressants for a short time but decided I was fine, didn't notice much of a change and no longer needed to spend money on them or a psychiatrist.

I think I did counseling for a longer period of time, though I stopped shortly after my first one became unavailable. The second one seemed to mean well but I didn't connect with them as well. It was probably best for me and anyone I encountered to have a neutral place to unleash my often uncomfortable thoughts. I think I got more out of talk therapy than medicine.

Some would probably recommend a return to therapy if they examined some of my recent behavior but I think I'm good, for the most part, aside from some questionable decision making.

Going to therapy is not about something being wrong with you sometimes we just need to talk to somebody who can hear us from a distance

If I can ask, is there a hurdle for you, pertaining to going back? Personally, I think everyone should have therapy. Life IS NOT easy all of the time. I think non judgmental parties are a great resource. It's different when venting w friends, because they know you, and have the ability/allowance of alrdy having opinions about you.

I'm not sure if there's a need for it. I'm not entirely sure what I would be seeking if I went back right now. Back then, I strongly felt that I would benefit from that kind of assistance. I was wondering if I was mentally broken or messed up. Something felt wrong. Things are better at the moment though it's possible that I could benefit in other ways. I'm open to it in the future but I'm good for now.

Yep...have been multiple of times and may go back in the future. Attempted to find a Black male therapist in my area but they all were focused on family and therapy via Christ LordT so I had to go the the non-threatening white dude.

It's crazy how hard it is to find black health care professionals. I googled my azz off trying to find a black (pref, not necessarily, gay) male pcp. You'd think I had been googling 'unicorns from planet zorgon when the rainbow isn't enough' based on the lack of results. I wish blk health professionals would get their networks together. @questforknowledge get ur friends to act right.

Apparently black, gay, male therapists are MUCH easier to come by in NY. Just found 4 in under 15 minutes.

I live in NY also and I go to therapy once a week because of anger issues. It helps alot. And I also do yoga now which allows me to not pull a Foxy Brown and throw my cell phone at someone. I always thought I had everything under control but it helps to have someone to talk to who is not trying to use you (even though the shit is expensive lol)

I have been to a few therapist over my years. Starting in 2005 after my Coast Guard Unit got activated to respond to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. After that experience, I developed insomnia once I returned to college. I signed up for a six-week session to work out some of my anxiety.

Now I regularly check in with our staff psychologist, just to decompress and the make sure I am processing my experiences healthily.

Sometimes I feel like everyone needs to have a regular sit-down or phone call or check in with a therapist. It helps.

My agency has had a number of office shootings that made the national news (and we're not even the Post Office lol). Although sometimes I wonder about the sanity of bureaucrats. They put a no-weapons sticker up our front door after Chicago's gun law was overturned by SCOTUS and I'm like, yeah, a bumper sticker is really a deterrent for the cray-cray lol.

Not to get too personal, but I've recently began my journey in therapy for my anger about two months ago. I mean, I've always known I had challenges with my anger yeh which caused me to hurt myself because I'm always doing dumb sh*t due to my anger; from busted knuckles to a broken wrist to shattered car windows. But recently yeh, I went through an event in my life that caused me to realise that I could no longer tolerate my anger the way it was. My anger is not who I am and I could no longer allow it to take me to a place like that.

Anyways, my therapist is DOPE! I love that woman. I'd try to marry her if her dude wasn't 10 feet tall & look like he can break my jaw with just a stare. She doesn't baby me, she doesn't let me half ass my sessions, she stops me from changing the subject (which is a terribly flawed defense mechanism of mine) and when I f*ck up, she doesn't trip. My anger is still not where I would like it to be but I'm getting a hang of it.

I truly suggested taking the step if you're considering it...& even if you're not.

Not that I have any right to be yeh, but, I'm proud of you bro. It sounds like we almost share the same challenge with our anger and I can only imagine taking that first step for help was hard... because that sh*t was f*cking hard for me yo, no lie.
