THE CYPHER AVENUE MUSIC SERIES
A series of posts showcasing music by masculine Gay/Bisexual artists that we dig for one reason or another. We may give reviews of their work and occasional interviews but this is mainly just for awareness since many of you don’t even know these musicians exist.

Picture BONE INTELL

Originally from Buffalo, NY, but currently residing New Jersey openly Gay masculine hip hop artist Bone Intell has been persistent in his hustle to become a force to be reckoned with in the hip hop game.

Bone channels his tri-state rap forefathers with a distinctively east coast sound in both his lyrics and rhyme flow. I have to admit that you can’t help but see a lot of potential in this young artist. In my research on Bone Intell, there was apparently a major label deal in the works that evaporated which caused him to consider marketing himself independently as a Gay artist to attract a niche fan base.

That was a courageous choice but in all honesty you’d be hard pressed to tell that he was gay by both his appearance and/or his music. Unfortunately, I feel that this is simultaneously an asset and a detriment to the artist.

Without the Gay angle, he risks coming across to the masses as just another “Myspace” indie rapper slinging mixtapes. This is less of a swipe at him but more of a result of the shear over saturation of internet musicians out there that sound too much alike.

I’ll reiterate this: I see a lot of potential in Bone Intell. Its almost as if I see what he sees in his mind as the type of artist he eventually wants to be…But he’s not quite there yet. His most recent mixtape (that we could find), “Changing Faces Volume 2” has been playing in my headphones for this review and a few crucial observations reveal the edges that need to be chiseled. In addition to the lack of focus for the overall project, throughout Bone Intell’s mixtape I consistently got the picture of a rapper unnecessarily on the defense. The theme seemed to be that he’s the guy being picked on continuously, the kid being backed into the corner by bullies. In other words: EVERYONE IS ALWAYS HATING ON HIM.

Track after track was either somewhat of a downer in mood or yet another song of Bone in the dark, frantically swinging his verbal arms and feet at his unseen haters. Don’t get me wrong, I get the feeling that the writer was putting his true feelings on wax, which is usually what you want from a genuine artist. However to pull this off in the machismo-fueled world of hip hop takes special skills, especially if the overall tone projected is an 80’s/90’s hardcore east coast feel. Playing the self deprecating angle really only works in hip hop when its used confidently as a badge of honor.

The great thing about his flow, however, is that its so fluid it makes everything I just mentioned easy to miss altogether. Hence the reason I say he’s definitely talented with untapped potential waiting to be released. It doesn’t hurt that he’s got fellow talented masculine Gay artists like Kaoz on his team…as evidenced in the Music Video embedded above. It not only features a cameo by Kaoz but was also directed by him as well.

To be fair, this unfocused mixtape was released years ago so I’m sure Bone has gotten a lot better in that time. I just discovered that he released a project in late 2011 called, “In It to Win It” (a new mixtape that even his website doesn’t mention exists) but I had not received it in time for this article. Also, I give him props for continually connecting with his fans by not only consistently releasing new music/beats on his Soundcloud page but also going as far as occasionally performing at small venues and jumping on Ustream for live interactions. We’re keeping our eyes on Bone Intell to see just what the future holds for this young talent.
