GOP Presidential Candidate Ben Carson: Prisons Prove Being Gay is a Choice

Finally! I finally have an explanation for why I’m Gay! Thanks to Republican Presidential candidate Ben Carson (who’s also a retired neurosurgeon) I now know that being gay has been a choice I apparently made while in prison as a child!

In an interview this morning, Ben Carson told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that prisons prove being gay is a choice.

It began when Cuomo asked Carson about his views on Same-Sex Marriage stating that people who are gay are fighting for equal rights like others who have been discriminated against. Carson responded saying, “It’s not the same situation because people have no control over their race, for instance.”

Cuomo followed up by asking, “You think they have control over their sexuality?”

Carson: Absolutely.

Cuomo: You think being gay is a choice?”

Carson: Absolutely. Because A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.

Nick Delmacy Watching the Interview: Hmmm. As a celebrated neurosurgeon, one would think Carson would understand that prison environments constitute as extenuating circumstances.

As ThinkProgress points out:

Carson’s comments belitte a major problem within the incarceration system: high rates of prison rape. Regardless of their sexuality, thousands of inmates are victimized by fellow prisoners and guards every year….Sex in prison is also a survival tactic, as many inmates engage in sexual activities to avoid brutal treatment behind bars. Just last week, the Marshall Project published a story about a 17-year-old boy who was repeatedly raped before he agreed to touch and kiss boys to avoid violent encounters in the future.

Facts and Data aside, these comments will surely help Ben Carson as he continues his 2016 Republican Presidential Primary Nomination. Most polls list him as a frontrunner. However, the tide is rapidly turning in regards to Gay Marriage.

While these statements may help him with the far right wing of the party, they may backfire when it comes to appealing to a larger segment of the population.

One thing I’ve never understood about this country…we learned in school that Church and State are “supposed’ to separate, yet the decisions of law makers are mired in religious restrictions. If Church were truly separate, then there would be no legitimate opposition to Same Sex Marriage and the re-writing of Marriage Laws to support it. Hell, it wouldnt have been illegal in the first place smh

Government has been and always will be mired in RELIGION of SOME sort. Check you dollar . Study the symbols. THAT God there is NOT Judeo Christian. One eye hand salutes etc. It’s a RELIGION. Whether it’s widely recognized or not. These pop stars and government officials don’t flash their allegiance to SOMETHING for nothing. They are SERVING something.
They bamboozled the masses with the supposed seperation of church and state. Religion has been in government and will always be. Just not what most expect or are informed about. It will be very blatant as time moves forward.
All hail the all seeing eye!

I don’t think one can ever separate church and state. It could be Christianity, Muslim, Buddhist, etc but most people get their morals and laws from religion. Who and what to hate, if and/or what animal can be eated, etc. Mosque and State, Temple and State, Church and state, I don’t think they can ever be separate.

So by this rationale, I can go to prison and choose to become straight. Who needs reparative gay therapy?

you cannot rationalize logic when it comes to the republican party they are beyond compassion beyond understanding, they are the left over residue of this countries white patriarchal heterosexual identity, and black folks like mr carson has a serious case of stockholm syndrome; he is a prime example of how even some slaves are still on the mental plantation even though they might be free.

This is just evidence that the Republican party is broken and out of touch and that Presidential Candidates are beholden to a small variety of extremist right-wing ideology.

It is ridiculous to me that Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon would come to these kind of dumb-fuck conclusions. Using a simple logic test (the reverse and negate process) you would find his statements are illogical and flawed.

People go to prison and become gay afterwards…..the reverse would be people do go to prison and don’t become gay….NOT TRUE. Therefore, Dr. Carson, needs to sit his simple ass down.

That’s because most of your images are actually just links to web pages. Image links end with things like .jpg .jpeg .gif .png

The link you posted above ends with .jpeg?&w=300&h=250

When I delete all of that extra text after .jpeg, this is what happens:

:Sigh: such bad logic this guy is throwing around. Perhaps this is something I’m not meant to understand. I could care less what religious or straight people do, so why do they care so much about what I’m doing?

Moreover, whether being gay is a choice, forced upon, or something natural is rather irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that it occurs and there’s nothing that can be done about it. If anything it’s just postponing the inevitable.

I feel sorry for Dr. Carson. The irony of him, a neurologist, making such neurotic comments and being associated with such neurotic people as the far right wing of the Republican party. His reputation and the respect he’s gained throughout his career is being diminished everyday he pursues this quixotic bid for president.

    • ControlledXaos | March 4th, 2015

It’s one of those situations where doctors, who by nature are scientists, may have also been raised with certain religious beliefs that in some cases conflict with what science says. One of the biology teachers in my high school refused to teach evolution because of this.

Kinda sad though. I knew he was conservative but not THAT conservative until a few months ago when he made his comments about gays.

      Oh well.

  9. Discordant | March 4th, 2015

Unfortunately, to win the Primary nomination, Republican candidates HAVE to appeal to the lowest common denominator in their party. These are the ones who actually go out in droves to vote, who watch Fox News, who believe in the Tea Party’s rhetoric. This is why Mitt Romney, a former moderate governor from Massachusetts who created the framework for what would eventually become Obama care, and whose state was among (if not) the first to legalize gay marriage turned into a caricature of himself. What they haven’t figured out is they’re winning primaries by alienating everyone else who could possibly vote for them in the presidential election.

With that said, his logic’s flawed and even if it was a choice, we’re tax-paying citizens and deserve the right to marry any other mentally capable adult we choose.

If it’s any consolation I seriously doubt he’ll be the Republican nominee. While he exhibits the appropriate levels of crazy to be fave of some movement conservatives he has two things going against him, 1: He has ZERO political experience, 2: He’s the wrong color.

I think Dr.Carson might have some form of early dementia or maybe a significant psychological change. Research has shown that sexuality may have a genetic basis (i.e younger siblings having a higher instance of identifying as homosexual). His interviews have been on the down slide for a while now.

Play on words by Cuomo. Liberal semantics game. Key words are “sexuality” and what the general percieves “gay” as being or what they want it to mean. Carson fell for it.
Anyone can have CONTROL over their SEXUALITY. In fact the world could use that. But controlling who you are attracted to,,,, GAY, in the case of same sex attraction is another topic. Carson would have been smarter had he pinpointed that to get his point across. Of course CNN runs with it , as they should. And conservatives look stupid all according to plan,
That word GAY is way too broad when it comes to intelligently discussing the difference between SEXUAL-ITY.. What you’re DOING and attraction, what’s in your head.

  22. Nightshade | March 5th, 2015

Homosexuality by textbook definition is sexual attraction to someone of the same sex. Gay, straight or otherwise humans have no real control over attraction. Choosing to act on that attraction is the choice; for some reason many people confuse the two.

    • Pensive | March 5th, 2015

Someone who gets it! I’m starting to believe the word gay when it was coined for homosexuality was MEANT to confuse people. And for political benefit. Throw out the term is what I say. And just say men who have sex with men msm. All these boxes some want to put everyone in. If heteroSEX is all I’ve done and known yet I’m forced at gunpoint to perform oral on another man, am I GAY? Or just a man who had sex with another man?

Ben Carson is a right wing christofascist. I have no doubt he actually believes this nonsense. He has a habit of making stupid and inflammatory statements in the media like, “the ACA is the worst thing to happen to the USA since slavery”, or that, “before president Obama was elected Black people were grateful for everything they were given.” Many people like Ben Carson are ignorant when it comes to human sexuality. His ignorance and stupidity is even more shocking since he is a man of medicine. He should know better. A man having sex with another man in prison doesn’t necessarily make them homosexual. If a man who normally has sex with women voluntarily has sex with another man in prison he’s probably bisexual. Many bisexual men don’t think of themselves as gay and often identify as straight. There is plenty of evidence and studies to show many people have some level of bisexuality but don’t readily admit because the social stigma attached to homosexuality. If Ben Carson took the time to read more books on the subject other than the fucking Bible he’d know this.

Guys in prison have sex with men in prison for survival as many of you guys have said. What he is doing is politics plain and simple remember When the sitting president (puppet job) was running he was against SS in 2008 then FF into 2012 and he is for it hat trick, it was classic. Carson is slow on some topics but he is simply playing to the Tea Party Republican base to get nominated.Ben Carson has a slave mentality and anything he says does not uplift just tears down. If being attracted to same-sex why don’t heterosexuals toggle on this side of the track and bisexuals stay with women. Someone should ask him why why people were having same sex relationships in the various cultures throughout the world way before modern times and prisons were to be blamed. It’s a laughable comment.Being closed minded in this day and age is shameful.

This is neither upsetting nor surprising. It’s sad but honestly I didn’t expect anything else from neurologist turned talking head with little to moderate name recognition. My issue with this type of rhetoric is that it disgraces the art of politics. Our country (our planet for that matter) has serious issues that need serious solutions and this type of divisive and bigoted rhetoric does nothing to move the country forward. The country deserves a reasonable opposition party, be they Democrat or Republican.

Annoying at least, slightly offensive at best. It’s sad that people still think that this is a choice.
That aside, he clearly doesn’t have anyone with a brain backing him. Politically speaking, he should stay away from hot button topics such as this until much later on in the game.

Watching the debate last night, I couldn’t help but think this guy is only on the stage to assure White America they had a black friend.

I am dismayed and frustrated that he talks about prison here without talking about the racial effects of our school to prison pipeline.

i dont think anyone who in prison who is not gay and performs sexual acts on other man comes out gay or should i say homosexual. Some may choice to be in the gay lifestyle but they are not Homosexual. I really dont think they chose the gay lifestyle either.
