A Buzzfeed video that’s making the rounds titled Men’s Standards Of Beauty Around The World, uses male models to show male standards of beauty and physical attributes from 12 different countries. According to Buzzfeed they gathered information from professional publications, entertainment, and social media to determine: how have popular culture and media shaped our views on ideal male beauty?
Looking at the video presentation one thing stuck out to me; many of the men presented are very…um…pretty.
Call me an old fashioned, patriarchal, masculine tunneled visoned, narrowed minded knuckle dragging, troglodyte but I’ve always been attracted to handsome men…not necessarily pretty or beautiful men.
In no way am I saying the men in the video are unattractive or that femininity is unattractive (it isn’t), I’m saying some were very pretty; therefore they’re unattractive to me.
Of course I don’t know any of these men personally to know who is masculine or feminine leaning and frankly who cares. I’m simply pointing out how possibly for many — with preferences like my own — prettiness in a man can equate to softness or femininity.
A question is posed at the end of the video; “What do you think makes a man beautiful?” I have told men before that I think they have a beautiful, caring spirit. Beauty in men for me is an internal attribute or characteristic. In my opinion a man’s masculinity and confidence can contribute to his overall handsomeness. Not just a classically attractive face.
What do you think makes a man beautiful? Are the male models in the video presentation in line with your standards of beauty? Have you ever called a man beautiful?

I was thinkin’ that same thing Ocky when lookin at that clip. I can appreciate a “pretty” dude visual, but it’s not something I personally would be attracted to. I like “regular” lookin guys; facial hair (5 o’clock shadow preferably), dressed for comfort not for show, a scar or two, big ears, humility, that fly dude that may not really know just HOW good lookin he really is, etc etc. I like gardening and working outside, so a dudes that not afraid to get dirty and not afraid of bees, bugs, or worms, that’s beautiful to me.
I’m not crazy about “Model-esc” dudes at all. Something (in my mind) very fake about them, even if they really look like that in real life, they just seem fake. Like they’re always ready for a “Photo Op”
.
“Like they’re always ready for a “Photo Op”” LMAO…but wait though
Who the hell wants the stray bee, wasp or dreaded big mutha-fuckin ass hornet buzzin round their head?
LOL I was deathly afraid of Bees, Wasps, and Hornets as a kid. Once I got into gardening I realized, them muhfukaz is payin you no mind. They too busy on they grind. Long as you don’t fuck with them, they don’t fuck with you. I just don’t need nobody wit a dick &balls, around me in my back yard swattin’ at shit, cringin’ at every buzzin’ sound, and twistin they face up and shrinkin into their self every time a worm or slug or snail or some shit appears. LOL
Yeah I like some “rough around the edges” on a dude. I can’t lie, there’s some ‘model fine’ types out there that get my attention but realistically, those ‘every thing has to be just so before I walk out of the house to get my mail’ types get on my nerves. And especially the ones that are not even that cute who feel they have to do all that.
I like the hublefine types. The guys who don’t think they are that hot but are and the fact that they don’t think they are that hot makes them even more hot.
I think there is a difference between beauty, which to me equals pretty and finding someone attractive which to me equals handsome.
I like that phrase that either @Nick or @Ocky used in a previous post. These men all looked manicured. Its not necessarily a bad thing, if you are in to that type of thing.
Agreed that this video shows mainly “pretty” men. I personally find beauty in guys rather masculine in appearance. Beard, mustache, fade or bald…it doesn’t matter. I also do not like “thin” men. I prefer a little bit of width, NOT to be confused with weight/fat.
Unfortunately, I carry feminine features (long eyelashes, curved eyes, high cheekbones) which at times deflect masculine men because somehow this equates to being feminine -_-. This video definitely captures a stereotype that “beautiful” means “pretty” and Is probably not sourced from numerous publications as it suggests.
I don’t think you need to preface your statement with “unfortunately”

You’re right, I could have used a better word :-). It’s not unfortunate. Nice quote btw
I’m known to randomly text the men in my life as “beautiful1”. Not only are they good looking , but it takes a beautiful personality to put up with me and love my crazy ass.
These mens faces are symmetrical. All easy on the eyes and good for what they are doing,,, modeling.
I think it’s more of the fact that they “are” modeling which hints “gay “and “vain”in the minds of many and 70% of the time or more that assumption is true. Which is probably why this look is not “prefered by many gay men and the vast majority of women for anything serious.
Vanity is generally a feminine characteristic and many gay men and women have enough of that on their own for the both of them. What need is there to embrace that which you may feel compelled to compete with?
I would date the Nigerian as long as he is not feelin himself in “excess”. Some humbleness if only mock humility.Goodlooking people like these ,models or not, know they are goodlooking . They are reminded of it daily. It’s how you carry yourself with the gift. And what you do with automatic advantages received to benefit others as well that matters. Selfishness will make you ugly.
I always remind people, especially my good looking friends that beauty fades over time…relying on good looks can get you places but there WILL come a time when you are no longer considered prime cut…you are just a New York Strip, like the rest of us…if you lead a life where step on and over people in the glory of vanity and not have exercised that humility bone…you will be passed by…
You know, I used to dismiss people who do that, use their looks to get ahead, but screw it. Use what you got to get what you want….while you can. Just don’t be out there without an afterplan or an asshole about it.
To be honest, white men have been so sensationalized in media all throughout history that I personally don’t find them attractive (no offense). I think it’s interesting that mixed boys are seen as most attractive these days, which ironically I have always found men who have a mulatto-ish look to be the most attractive of all guys.
I don’t like “pretty” or overly groomed men. Being well groomed is fine but overly groomed is a turn off. It strikes me as superficial, made up, or effeminate. I’ve never liked the pretty boy type. From my observation those guys tend to be vain, unresourceful, unimaginative, high maintenance, bitchy, and generally useless at anything other than just looking good. I’ll take a dude who is an average, or guy next door type any day over a pretty boy. To me it’s more of turn on when a man isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty whether it be changing a tire, working in the yard, or even putting together a bookshelf.
I don’t know why, but I like the ‘football’ types! The ones that are not ‘thugs’ (white people made me not even like using this word, but in this case it’s good for me), but still give off that type of mannerisms. I’d figure that the ‘average’ good looking men would be like the skinny-muscled white boy type. That’s alright for them (in my Diana Ross), but it ain’t enough for me (unless he got a long stick; I’m sorry but I have to say it). Hell, just google Thomas Jones. He’s to me the PERFECT stereotype of a man that I love, if I would have to (in my K. Michelle voice) build me a man!
(just speaking of looks) Yup.. those were models… gym 5 to 7 days a week, diet. For some of you, that is real. For me..nope. Gimme a guy with a regular body. We all strive to be fit/healty.. but fit and healty is going to be different for each of us.
Really skinny.. or a little tummy w/ love handles..tall…short.. it just depends on the whole package.
F**k societial standards of beauty!
