Mixology: The Suffering Bastard
If you are a drinker, I’m sure you have heard the best remedy for a hangover is more liquor. Introducing the Suffering Bastard.
The drink’s origins can be traced to the Long Bar at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo. As the story goes, in the late 1940s, the Shepheard’s bar steward was Joe Scialom. One day in 1947, Scialom was desperate for a hangover remedy and the Suffering Bastard was the result.
I am a fan of quick and easy cocktails and this one fits the bill. The recipe appears in the book from cocktail historian and cultural anthropologist Jeff Berry: Beachbum Berry Remixed
Suffering Bastard Ingredients
- 1 ounce bourbon
- 1 ounce gin
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 4 ounces chilled ginger ale
- Place all ingredients in a chilled glass with ice cubes
- Add ginger ale and orange slice for garnish
Enjoy

I’ve never ascribed to the notion that “more alcohol” is the remedy for a hangover. For me, iced cold cranberry juice and 2 tylenol does the trick. But then again, I haven’t suffered a hangover in years. I only drink premium liquor (when possible), and I never overdo it.
