In an age where the black community lacks the fearless, intelligent and passionate leaders of yesterday, author & educator Dr. Marc Lamont Hill has definitely been a breath of fresh air.

Dr. Hill, a holder of a University of Pennsylvania Ph.D., has tirelessly spoken out against police brutality, the racially biased criminal justice system, the impact on drugs in the black community and many more issues facing under served groups.

He’s also been giving back to his community for years, putting action and rhetoric on the same playing field. He’s founded and worked with programs like the Philadelphia Student Union, My5th, the ACLU Drug Reform Project and he’s on the faculty of Columbia University as Associate Professor of Education regularly giving lectures to young men & women on racial equality in the criminal justice system.

In 2001, he started a literacy project that uses hip-hop culture to increase school engagement and reading skills among high school students. He also continues to organize and teach adult literacy courses for high school dropouts in Philadelphia and Camden.

Being young himself (35 years old), Marc Lamont Hill relates closely to the Hip Hop culture of today’s youth through their music, slang and attitudes. This is one reason he’s so passionate when speaking out against the inequalities young African American and Latino men & women face in our country’s education, legal and prison systems.

In addition to all of that, heterosexual Marc Lamont Hill is fearless in standing up for the equality of gays. For a young man raised in the macho culture of Hip Hop, its inspiring to see him be so outspoken for the rights and acceptance of Homosexual men of color.

And let’s face it….Marc Lamont Hill is a very handsome man. His engaging personality and unquestionable intelligence is extremely sexy, which makes him perfect for the camera. This is evidenced by his long running stint as a political pundit on networks such as Fox News and CNN, hosting the syndicated talk show Our World with Black Enterprise and also being one of the founding hosts of the Huffpost Live internet news web series on Huffington Post.

It is one of my guilty pleasures to see Marc Lamont Hill intellectually battle people in televised debates. He never backs down from clearly and quickly backing up his opinions with facts and statistics.

Personally: His good looks, his intelligence, his urban personality and sense of humor, his passion for tearing down the injustices people of color face, his hustle mentality, his unwavering aggressiveness, his well thought out (sometimes unpopular) opinions that he clearly articulates and his ability to blend in with both the intellects on educational conference panels down to the thugs in neighborhood barbershops makes him a living example of what I emulate and view as Modern Black Male Masculinity.

Check out some of Dr Marc Lamont Hill’s many television appearances below where he demonstrates why he’s one of our greatest modern role models.
