I’m sure everyone has their favorite horror film but what about a favorite horror film franchise? Even though I personally don’t have one, I’m kinda feeling the Top 10 Horror Movie Franchises Of All Time presented by mojo.com. I wasn’t in total agreement with using box office earnings to compile the list but I think the criteria overall was solid. The franchise must have more than one sequel, have iconic status and popularity in addition to earnings.
Did your favorite franchise make the cut? What is your all-time favorite horror film franchise?

I think.Scream was a game changer but the franchise as a whole was weak
Scream was the movie that basically resurrected the horror genre. There was more to horror than just Freddy and Jason and it was needed.
For all that supernatural power that other horror films had, we are really afraid of crazy ass, sociopathic, mere mortals.
O i agree Scream changes the game. But despite what @thatguy saus, the sequels werent very good which is why i say it isnt a top ten franchise
I think each sequel, even that circus that was Scream 3 added to the discussion.
S1-Slasher Films
S2-Sequels (and the debate on media influencing real life violence)
S3 trilogies(ok,this was a fail)
S4 all the damn remakes/reboots that try to out do the classics
Probably why “The Excorcist” didn’t make the cut either. I don’t remember the sequels very well, but I think I remember them not being all that great.
Its pretty interesting, when Scream came out it was really one of a kind. I think it spawned so many tropes in horror that it gradually started to feel cliche simply because so many other movies started playing follow the leader with it.
I think the “found footage” films that started with Blair Witch also changed the game in films in general.
Good call!
I remember seeing it in the theater when I was in college with my crew. We sat the very top of the audiorioum in the back.
There were several scenes where we were straight up laughing and the rest of the theater was quiet. It was “damn, she got fucked up! balala!” The rest of the thater was silent as church mice.
I loved it though.
Paranormal Activity is cool. I liked the first two. I have not scene 4 but it’s on my Netflix queue.
To this day, I still have not seen this whole movie from start to finish. I always catch from the woods “chase” scene.
ALIEN! I loved this franchise. The first installment I must have seen at the movie theater a couple of dozen times (this was long before VCRs & DVDs.) The third film in this franchise was the weak link. However, the other three are pretty good and first one has successfully withstood the test of time and ranks as the best one. So many movies have borrowed or outright stolen themes from the first one which was very ground breaking when it was first released in 1979.
Love the “Alien” franchise, too!! I’m like a Xeno-Buff LOL I don’t consider them “horror” flicks, tho. I liked 1 thru 3, Pt.2 being my fav. Pt.3 was alright, I think I’m the only person that liked it LOL Everything after however, can kiss my ass, including AVP. smh “Prometheus” started off kinda “shakey”, but lets see where they go with the new franchise.
Wow! I liked Pt. 4 of the Alien Franchise, though repeated viewings kind of dimmed it’s luster. Singorney Weaver’s Ripley kicked ass! As I said in my initial comment the original Alien broke new ground because it was not just considered sci-fy, but was put in a new classification at the time as Sci-fy Horror. The baby alien bursting out of the man’s chest is pure horror. I agree that the Alien vs Predator series was pure garbage. I too, can’t hardly wait for the next Prometeus installment.
I love Alien Resurrection too. Im not sure why it geta so much hate. It was much more fun than the 3rd one
Not that my opinion matters, but “Resurrection” was my least favorite. smh. That whole “half human/ half Xeno” concept turned me off, not to mention it was just gross to look at. lol
Sure your opinion matters, Hannibal and I just happen to disagree. Good discussion though. Full disclosure, In Part 4, I was sad when Ripley had to kill the creature in the end.
I sometimes feel like the horror films in Hollywood lack original ideas. But that is also found in Hollywood in general. I think the last good horror movie I saw The Awakening. But for full disclosure, I am not a fan of the horror variety…
10. Scream- Scream was just a very fun series to watch. I loved trying to figure out who the killer(s) was/were. The only thing that annoyed me was Sidney Prescott until she kind of became a badass. Seriously, though why wouldn’t she always have a gun on her?
9.Child’s Play-Scared the living shit out of me as a kid. The thought of something being my size that I played with would kill me was terrifying. His uncanny strength was odd and his obsession with Andy was just stupid. Just find any damn kid and do the damn spell!
8. Final Destination-I thought this was such an original idea. Loved the first one. After that the movies got kind of stupid. If I were in that situation I would just accept it’s my time instead of evading objects every second of every day.
7. Paranormal Activity- This movie affected me as an adult more than most. While I’m in the theater I’m cool, but once I get home…tv and lights stay on all night. Even then I’m still freaked out because the whole movie you can’t actually see the demon. So I’m lying down imagining the worst.
6. TCM- Eh, it’s okay to me. These movies are decent I suppose, but the screaming guy chasing people with a chainsaw while startling isn’t very scary to watch.
5. Saw-Loved the first one. Liked the second one. Only looked forward to the traps in the other sequels and couldn’t care less about the story anymore.
4. Dead series- I’m a zombie fan so I liked all of them minus Survival of the Dead.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street- Might just be my favorite series due to the idea being so original. You can’t escape sleep, so you can’t escape him. Granted Freddy became more of a personality than someone to fear later in the series.
2. Halloween-I think the scariest thing about Michael Myers is I have no clue what the hell he is. Just a possessed soul that never dies?
1. Friday The 13th- This actually has to be one of my least favorite of the horror franchises. I Still liked Jason Takes Manhattan, New Blood, Jason X and Jason Goes To Hell.
The only one I haven’t seen is Paranormal Activity. I will have to check it out. Does anyone still hold horror film marathons on Halloween_
