Here are promo videos for a new black gay web series called “Cheetah in August” premiering later this year. The series is directed by Anthony Newsome and written by Andrew Malone for Bawn TV, an indie internet network producing gay content.
SYNOPSIS:
“A former track star, August Chandler (aka “Cheetah”) struggling with his identity discovers that he possesses a power to heal through the acts of sex. [His] distorted views on love, negatively affects the people closest to him. The journey of the main character, August, from his high school years into adult life is extremely interesting and current to the times of today. Sexuality, love, religion, psychology, and self-hate are all themes that are touched on throughout this series and it definitely raises awareness to societal issues that are often swept under the rug. This project is allowing people to come face to face with situations that happen on a daily basis. Often times, when people are dealing with personal issues they tend to harbor their feelings because they fear being judged. I want people to realize the negative affects that this can cause in hopes that someone watching can find the courage to seek help and break free.” – IMDB

Looks a bit too melodramatic for our tastes but could still surpass most black gay web content in story and style.
Here’s a behind the scenes clip featuring members of the cast discussing the film:
On the other hand, here’s a clip of the writer discussing the origins of the project. He admits that he came up with the idea for “Cheetah in August” while horny in bed one night.
Also, you could make a drinking game out of how many times he says the word: SEX.
I don’t want to prejudge the series before I even view it, but it doesn’t make me enthusiastic to see yet another Gay web series (produced by gay men) that only depicts homosexuals as deviant sex addicts.
Well, let me clarify. I don’t mind exploring sexuality in gay films, even excessive sexuality. I just would like to see stories where sex and sexuality wasn’t the foundation for everything else.
Even if that’s ultimately not the case with this show, I wish there were more creative narrative gay projects that were deeper than hookups, sex addiction, getting a man, keeping a man and/or the hardships of sex preparation for feminine bottoms.
Can we finally get a Gay Thriller? Or a Gay SciFi Tale? Or a Gay Vampire Story?
I will admit, however, that “Cheetah in August” does appear to go into the psychology of Homosexuals who engage in risky sexual behavior, unlike most gay web series seen on the Internet. So the def get props for that if that turns out to be the case.
What are your thoughts based on the trailer?

OMG…this was just as depressing as the Nationwide commercial that aired during the Super Bowl where the kid died.
Who would’ve thought sex would be so depressing lol.
The production looks better then most web series I seen. The dudes look like a nice mix, not all fem too. But it did look like a lot of drama.. but maybe they just trying to show the acting range in the trailer. I might give it a chance
*sigh* Pardon me, if I sound mean because I just watched a whole bunch of indie stuff today. But if the sound in the freaking trailer is bad, I can’t imagine how awful it must sound while watching the show.
i agree with Nick because most of these series are the same thing and at some point these writers, directors, and producers need to realize that we in the black gay community are tired of seeing the same story lines and want more diversity in the genres. As a writer and future director myself I do my best not to produce the same things i am seeing in today’s age because people get bored of it real quick and toss your project to the side. i do wish this web series the best but got damn, it’s time for a change!!!
It comes off like it’s going to be a drag to watch story wise, but I guess not bad enough that I’m going to immediately write it off.I’ll try to give it a chance.
Premise seems interesting, but execution is too melodramatic. Melodrama =/= serious.
If you’re lookin for a “gay SciFi tale” check out Star Trek Phase 2: “Blood and Fire”
These comments are by and large disappointing to read. I’m looking forward to this series. There’s a major difference between gratuitous sex scenes and sex being employed as a spiritual construct, palliative tool or restorative force. These are themes that Toni Morrison has employed with a fair bit of success. Hopefully the writer of Cheetah in August nor potential investors will be discouraged.
