I often wonder about the lives of other masculine gay men in other countries.
The short film Cowboy Forever at least gave me some insight into what life may be like for a masculine gay cowboy in Brazil. Starring Govinda Machado de Figueiredo and Jones Carlos Fialho de Araújo, Cowboy Forever is fictionalized from a true
The docu-drama was directed by Jean-Baptiste Erreca and is one of a couple of gay short films featured on “Not Gay” which was released in 2008.
The movie has beautiful backdrops of the Pantanal of western Brazil which is one of the largest wet land areas in the world. It’s a nice change of pace to see something different than the normal urban locations of many other gay short films. Much of the film takes place on the surrounding ranch land where these men have formed a bond herding cattle and constantly laughing and making fun of on one another.
The main character “Govinda” and his crush are both attractive hard working everyday masculine men. Even though Jones is not gay, he is secure with his sexuality and has no problem accepting Govinda. Also the other cowboys know about Govinda’s sexuality and don’t seem to care. They may make fun but they are not hateful or anti-gay. It seems to me they care more about his work ethics and pulling his weight around the ranch than his sexuality.
About half way through the film, Govinda admits that he doesn’t have any gay friends and his apprehension shows when he meets Jone’s friend who happens to be gay. The three take a trip to a nearby city for rest and relaxing. While there Jones attempts to get some pussy (as Govinda says) but the three of them end up at a gay party. Govinda’s observations and animal metaphors of the people at the party are humorous.
Cowboy Forever is a very simple film showing how Govinda goes through his own self-discovery and acceptance. It’s a snapshot of friendship and understanding between two men, one straight and one gay.
Outside of the final corny scene in the film, I really enjoyed Cowboy Forever. Even though we are witness to the dilemma that Govinda is facing there is no real “drama” here. It’s a very much laid back and relaxing short which some may find boring. For me, I enjoyed seeing the men smile and laugh versus crying, being angry and depressed.

@Ocky….. I can’t understand what their saying but it looks like a nice film. Thanks for sharing.
@tazio-forrest sorry. The updated English version has been posted. Thank you for the catch.
Now the only issue I have was, like dang why he gotta say “SISSY” like that but then he was nibbling on the drag queen titties….too funny LMBO
Ha…yeah. Keep in mind he was coming to grips with his sexuality.
WORD….but that’s how majority of masculine refer to guys who are not as masculine as they are, but when lights out and when it’s pouring outside and dick gets hard it’s the same ole “SISSIES” they wonna beat their backs out. I understand what you’re saying but in real life you see this. Both in DL, OUT, DISCREET gay men they are so quick to despise “SISSIES” in public but ready to breed one as the street lights come on. Smh
This was an enjoyable film. I too had some issues with the word sissy, but was ecstatic that his self evolution and revelation wasn’t some traumatic experience. That he could experience his coming out process, if you will, with all the wonder, excitement and curiosity of a child was beautiful to behold. I feel like so many of us miss out on this type of experience because of the negativity that is associated with anything remotely gay, especially if its layered with any hint of femininity attached to it. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as Govinda offered his analysis of the drag queen and was pleasantly surprised when his analysis ended in affirmation of her beauty and his admiring of such, and not the self hatred that tends to grip many of us in understanding the many incarnations of the community in which we are a part of. All in all, a pretty good film. Will definitely watch again and see what else is laying under the surface of all that rustic, manly scenery!!!
Yes I agree. In all his masculinity in my opinion Govinda still accepted others for who they were regardless of his own personal aversions or opinions.
Liquor is an excuse. Either way it still allowed him to explore being with or just liking the attention of those drag queens or the transgendered. Also keep in mind (I think) this was still a coming out or being comfortable process for him.
